Temp Files Are Being Created In Website Directory
May 29, 2010
I am seeing temp files created in my wesite directory. The files are attributed to a page that I load from a txt file for more info. I beleive when I user clicks on the more info link and I read the textfile into the page it creates the temp file named somthing like this moreinfo.aspx~RF1630b1e.TMP does anyone know a way to clean these up other than a manual task? below is the code I use to read in the txt file
<script language="vb" runat="server">
Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs)
Dim strURLNAme As String
Dim MyFileName As String
strURLNAme = Request.QueryString("AdultInfo")
' Response.Write(strURLNAme)
If strURLNAme = "adult" Then
MyFileName = "AdultMoreInfo.txt"
ElseIf strURLNAme = "kids" Then
MyFileName = "KidsMoreInfo.txt"
End If
'Open a file for reading
Dim FILENAME As String = Server.MapPath(MyFileName)
'read the file
Dim objStreamReader As StreamReader
objStreamReader = File.OpenText(FILENAME)
'read the entire file into a string
Dim contents As String = objStreamReader.ReadToEnd()
Me.lblNicerOutput.Attributes.CssStyle.Add("text-align", "Left")
'We may wish to replace carraige returns with <br>s
lblNicerOutput.Text = contents '.Replace(vbCrLf, "<br>")
objStreamReader.Close()
End Sub
</script>

<add key="ChartImageHandler" value="storage=file;timeout=20;dir=c:TempImageFiles;" />
is fine for development, but not so good for deploying on IIS. I found a forum post that mentioned you could drop the path altogether, which dumps the temp file(s) directly in the root of my project

I have static content like html,css javascript stored in DB. when a user requests for these i create a temp file in virtual directory and return the url. My web app is hosted on a IIS server. On some systems on creation of a file my IIS Application pool crashes and restarts. If i disable file-monitoring though the problem is resolved, but i dont have this luxury when i am deplying at the client end. Is there any way by which i can avoid app pool crash during file creation? If not is there any way by which i can serve static content like html, css, images, xml and js without creating temp files. I would need a generalized way of handling all these data types.

I am developing an ASP.NET 3.5 website using Visual Studio 2008 professional on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine. The website is hosted on the local machine IIS with no problems at all. I got a new server (Windows Server 2008 R2), I created a new virtual directory on IIS to host my website. When I try to publish it, I get this error: "The Web server does not appear to have FrontPage Server Extensions installed." I have searched online and it appears that FrontPage extensions have been removed from IIS 7.5

I have an ASP.NET application running on Apache server with mod_mono. If I have a folder called "temp" located in the website's root directory and run the following code
System.IO.TextWriter tw = new System.IO.StreamWriter("temp/test.txt");
tw.WriteLine(DateTime.Now);
tw.Close();
it saves test.txt in C:Program FilesMono-2.6.4in emp on the server. If I add a slash to the directory name like this: System.IO.TextWriter tw = new System.IO.StreamWriter("/temp/test.txt"); It saves it to C:/temp. Both do not do what I want. How do I get the code to save the file to the temp folder inside my website's root directory? Is this a mod_mono issue or something to do with Apache? I have tried adding this line to httpd.conf Alias /temp "C:/Path_to_root_folder/temp" without any luck. I shouldn't have to use alias if the temp folder is within the root directory, correct? In my development environment which uses XSP as the web server everything works as expected. It is only a problem when running on Apache.

I have an ASP.Net (2.0) application on an intranet that impersonates the users Windows login.
It has <identity impersonate="true" /> in the web.config file.
In a couple of places it needs to create a file in the temp folder of the server (a text file in one instance and a Word doc in another instance) before sending the resulting file to the user, after which it is deleted.
It runs into a permission problem, which I assume is because the user that is being impersonated does not have permission to write to the server's hard drive.
How do I overcome this?
I assume it be something along the lines of temporarily running under a different account for the create/read/write/delete temp file parts of code.
how to do this and which account would be the best (easiest) to use. It will be a Windows 2003 server.

onething is not clear to me that in asp.net 1.1 there was asp.net project type but from 2.0 there is no asp.net project type option rather
there is option called website. in website type project no solution is created and no link is created with IIS.
why microsoft design in this way from 2.0. i think there must be soldin reason & advantage behind it.

As virutal directory points to physical path of the application, so if the IIS root directory is C:inetpubwwwroot and the application is stored at D:websites, than we need to create a virtual directory but if the application content is placed at C:inetpubwwwroot, then why still need to create virtual directory.

I have an ASP.Net project created by a team member on another computer. The project references a virtual directory that exists on my computer but under a different localhost location.Currently, the following error occurs when I try to open the project:
The local IIS URL http://localhost/foo/default.aspx specified for Web project foobar has not been configured. In order to open this project the virtual directory needs to be configured. Would you like to create the virtual directory now?[Yes] [No]
So, there are two options: select yes: It creates the virtual directory that it thinks I need, which I don't want to do. I already have a virtual directory somewhere else.
select no: This isn't an option, as the project opens, but without all the bells and whistles I know and love.
Where is the virtual directory location (in my case http://localhost/foo/default.aspx) specified within the project? Can I change this manually, say in a configuration file within the project, either before or after I open it? A configuration change seems more ideal than manually opening IIS to override a virtual directory path.
EDIT (solution): Buried in the comments below is the following answer (Thanks @Thyamine)This can be configured in the foo.csproj file for the project. Look for the lines:
<ProjectExtensions>
<VisualStudio>
<FlavorProperties GUID="{F00-000-000}"> [code]....

I want to make a 2nd website and am using a copy of the site files from my 1st site built for me, I added them via FTP to the hosting company. I realise when I edit the new site via the CMS it is editing both sites plus when I try to change anything to the CSS file I get the following error -
C:inetpubvhosts*****mysite******httpdocsapp_themessiteStyleSheet.css
So my questions are what do I need to change to be able to deploy a new site with the files I have to make a new site?I also don't understand where the password is coming from, I can see the User ID comes from the database. in the Asp.net connection strings are the following:
site Data Source=sql7.hostinguk.net;Initial Catalog=***;User ID=***;Password=*** - Where is this password coming from?
membership Data Source=sql7.hostinguk.net;User ID=***;Password=***;persist security info=False;initial catalog=***;

I am developing an ASP.NET 3.5 web application and I have a folder in the project which contains a list of documents which could be pdf or any of the MS office 2003 or 2007 supported file formats. I would like to display these files to my users as thumbnails (just like the way windows displays files). And when the user clicks on a file it has to prompt them to either save the file or open in the browser itself. How can I achieve this?
