Test System.Web.Authorization From Code?

nside a web.config file, you can control user/role authorization like this:

look at the attached web.config? The last part doesn't seem to work although the path is correct. I've tried logging on the site with a use which is in no groups, but it can still access the page...

I want to maintain different user authorization lists for different environments. I know that connectionstrings can be broken out in an external file with configSource, but how would I do this for the following?
<authorization>
<allow users="someuser1"/>
<allow users="someuser2"/>
<allow users="someuser3"/>
<deny users="*"/>
</authorization>
I've sucefully runned it in my local server (Windows Server 2003 Standart) but after tried several times upload it to my hosting, it never works. The web hosting company told first that they didn't had System.Web.Routing.dll installed (but they said that they've .NET 3.5 installed..), then i've copied the dll to Bin folder and again with no sucess. Can someone give me a very basic example of and website using System.Web.Routing.dll so i can do the "final" test on webhost before i go to the company because they say that they have 3.5 installed but i'm starting to see that they didn't have? If possible, is there another way to test if this dll is installed in web hosting? (test all .dll running for example)
View 1 RepliesI am looking for some suggestions for an application I am writing. Here is a brief description of the application:The application is written in C# ASP.NET version 4.0 and is to be hosted on an IIS6 web server. The purpose of the application is to serve as a download page for sensitive documents. There will be several levels of access which will be granted according to user credentials stored in a SQL table. I don't want the application to check the user's NT ID and either allow or disallow access to the application depending on whether they are authorized or not, I want it to filter on data i.e. everyone can view the application, it will just limit the data they can view depending on their access.
point me in the direction of some source code that can check the NT ID of user's local machines and compare it to a table in SQL?
I am using ASP.NET MVC 3 and am trying to do something that should be really straight forward...
My application uses Forms authentication and that is working perfectly for controllers/actions. For example if I decorate either a controller or an action with the attribute below only members of the administrators group can view them:
[Authorize(Roles="Administrators")]
However I have a folder under the default Scripts folder called Admin. I only want members of the Administrators group to be able to access scripts within this directory so I created a new web.config in the directory with the following inside:
[code]....
However no matter whether a user is a member of the Administrators group or not they receive a 302 Found message and are then redirected to the login page.
If I change the web.config to allow user="*" then it works. It also works if I add an allow users="Username" for a specific user I am testing with.
I have a C# program used to build and deploy a suite of websites.
I would like to programatically interact with IIS so that it changes where the virtual directory for a test system points to based the result of the build.
When a user attempts to directly visit the url admin.aspx, and they are not an admin, they are redirected to the login page. However, the user then attempts to visit ViewWeek.aspx, it indicates that they are still logged in. Why does this ASP.NET authorization boot the user to the login screen, yet keep the user logged in? I'd rather it just direct the user to the default URL specified in the forms tag.
Here's my Forms Authentication:
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms name=".ASPXFORMSAUTH" defaultUrl="ViewWeek.aspx" timeout="50000000" />
</authentication>
I'm going thru an asp.net 4 book, and I'm at a part about classes and their properties and functions. But up to now, all the examples involve a web_site, with controls, code_behind files, CSS, etc. But, I get to places where I don't understand the examples, so I look out on the web for other resources. For example, I found the code below to demonstrate the "ToString" function. My problem is, I'm not sure know how to test a little piece of code like this. Can't I just open up an application or project or something, paste this in and run it?
Module Module1
Class Perl
Dim _a As Integer
Dim _b As Integer
Public Sub New(ByVal a As Integer, ByVal b As Integer)
_a = a
_b = b
End Sub
Public Overrides Function ToString() As String
Return String.Format("[{0}, {1}]", _a, _b)
End Function
End Class
Sub Main()
Dim p As Perl = New Perl(2, 3)
Console.WriteLine(p)
End Sub
End Module
I am new to the Web Services. I am learning this one. I am 10th stander. I need a simple code and procedure how to use it in our web site?
View 2 RepliesI have been spinning my wheels now for awhile trying to figure out how I can possibly unit test the following code. At first I was going to use Moq to mock everything, but it doesn't include the ability to mock sealed classes. I know I need to abstract out the calls to the implementation (Configuration) using an interface? but I can't seem to make it all work right. The code can be altered but I would prefer to keep the methods static, unless you can present a compelling reason not to. You can add interfaces or create whatever seams are needed. Also, GetConnStringByName() can be refactored to return the relevant string instead of a ConnectionStringSettings. Thoughts?
namespace Stackoverflow.Rocks
{
/// <summary>
/// Utility class for progmattically selecting values from the Web.config file.
/// </summary>
public class WebConfigStrings
{
//private static Configuration myConfiguration = System.Web.Configuration.WebConfigurationManager.OpenWebConfiguration(HttpContext.Current.Request.ApplicationPath);
/// <summary>
/// Retrieves the desired connection string value based upon the target name.
/// </summary>
/// <param name="connectionStringName">The target connection string referenced in the Web.Config</param>
/// <returns>The value specified in the Web.Config by your connectionStringName</returns>
public static ConnectionStringSettings GetConnStringByName(string connectionStringName)
{
Configuration rootWebConfig = System.Web.Configuration.WebConfigurationManager.OpenWebConfiguration(HttpContext.Current.Request.ApplicationPath);
ConnectionStringSettings connString;
connString = rootWebConfig.ConnectionStrings.ConnectionStrings[connectionStringName];
return connString;
}
/// <summary>
/// Retrieves the desired application string value based upon the target name.
/// </summary>
/// <param name="applicationStringName">The target application string referenced in the Web.Config</param>
/// <returns>The value specified in the Web.Config by your applicationStringName</returns>
public static string GetAppStringByName(string applicationStringName)
{
string appString = "";
appString = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings[applicationStringName];
return appString;
}
}
}
I use this test code and it works well :
JQuery
$(document).ready(function () {
$("#Result").click(function () {
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "test-JQuery-Page-Methods.aspx/GetInfo",
data: {},
contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
dataType: "json",
success: function (msg) {
$("#Label1").text(msg.d);
}
});
});
});
.VB
<WebMethod()> Public Shared Function GetInfo() As String
Return "test"
End Function
Now i try to pass an argument to the function but something is wrong in my code and i dont know what is wrong... :
JQuery
$(document).ready(function () {
$("#Result").click(function () {
var textj = 'test';
var jsonText = JSON.stringify(textj);
$.ajax({
type: "POST",
url: "test-JQuery-Page-Methods.aspx/GetInfo",
data: jsonText,
contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
dataType: "json",
success: function (msg) {
$("#Label1").text(msg.d);
}
});
});
});
.VB
<WebMethod()> Public Shared Function GetInfo(ByVal infostring As String) As String
Return infostring
End Function
I had a general question about extracting code from a visual studio web test. I used the "generate code" option of a web test and got the following:
[code]....
What I wanted to do is basically put this test into a separate service to run throughout the day for purposes of health checking. I basically want to make sure that users are able to log in throughout the day. What process should I use to get the test into something like a console app? I was running into issues with debugging the webtest code.
I'm trying to test the login control without writing any code. According to Murachs book, you can drag and drop the login control onto a Login.aspx form. Use the ASP Configuration Security tool to create user, roles, and access rules for the website. And you should then be prompted for authentication. I created two folders in my website, admin and users. The admin folder has a admin.aspx form and the users folder has a users.aspx form. I also edited the access rules to only allow admin to access the admin.aspx and only allow user to access the users.aspx form.
View 4 RepliesI can't believe the number of issues that seem to work fine on test but completely crash and burn on production.I have a situation where the code works fine in the test/development environment, but when you press a button in production, it crashes with:
[Code]....
Its just a button push, that is suppose to rebind a quantity change back to the database that the user has changed in a textbox in Gridview Edit.

Our team has recently implemented a role permission based authorization so that we can have granular control. This is similar to what Rockford Lhotka suggests herehttp://www.lhotka.net/weblog/PermissionbasedAuthorizationVsRolebasedAuthorization.aspx I have also read about the Claims based authorization which to me looks very similar to what we have. Can some one put in simple terms what the advantages of claims based authorization are.
View 1 Repliesi have to do some message exchange with a 3rd party (in a website).When the client posts a page, i start the message exchange. When that doesn't succeed for some reason, i report this to the client by rendering the page with a message.On the background, in a separate thread, i start a process to send abort messages to the 3rd party. I can't do this while the user is waiting for the page to come back, because it might take a few minutes.But in a test project, the test ends when the message to the 3rd party is sent, and after the new thread is started. But it seems that the new thread also ends, when the test is done.
Is that normal behaviour?I do start the thread in a new class with a reference to 2 objects from the class which tries to send the message in the first place, may that be a problem?EDIT: it keeps running when the whole process is started in IIS
I tried to install Visual Studio Prof 2010 trail version in my system, but i got an error saying 'Please remove/uninstall Visual Studio 2010 load test controller' to proceed installation. i uninstalled my previous VS2008 software from system and i could not find anything like 'Remove/Uninstall Visual Studio 2010 load test controller' software in my Add/Remove Programs.

I can not run System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(@"wmplayer.exe") in code behind under IIS, - nothing happens, though I can do it successfully using Visual Studio ASP.NET Development server. I read topic http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555134 and made as recommended: 1) Made ASP.NET worker process run in SYSTEM account 2) Enabled IIS Admin Service to interact with desktop and rebooted serivce. - wmplayer.exe does not start, even its process does not start. I tried start notepad.exe and it partly works - process starts, I see only window frame, but not menu and can not interact with it. The other thing I tried is to put it under out-of-process (IIS virtual folder properties) and gave the process administrative rights (changed identity in Component Services): no result.
