Using Web.config To Store And Map Info?

Jan 14, 2010

I've been reading others questions regarding storing settings in the web.config. Most of you agree that's a good way to store settings.I just have another doubt about that.

In my app, I need to map some ID's in the web.config. For example:
[Table = UserType]
1 - User
/2 - Admin

Is it a good idea to store these settings in the web.config so I know what is the right ID in my application? Do you have a better solution?

Security :: How To Store User Info In Web.config

Apr 26, 2010

Using visual studio 2010.

Dragged and dropped a login control onto a blank content page. Set up my web.config (i'll include the code for that at the end). It seems to want to use a sql database to store the info. I just want to use the web.config since it's just a single user and a simple site. I thought I could just drag and drop the login control to a page and that would be the end of it (besides setting up the web.config).

Here's what i have in the config file

Web Forms :: Store Customer Info In DB Based On Radiobuttonlist

Mar 24, 2011

So I want to store customer information based on radiobuttonlist selections. The radiobuttonlist items are pulled from a database. When the customer makes a selection I want that selection to be stored in a database to record their order. There are 7 radiobuttonlists. So when they make a selection on one item, they are moved along to the next item. I want this to continue through all 7, store the information in a database and then produce a order summary at the end.

Store Config Settings For A .NET DLL (not EXE Or Web)?

Jan 19, 2011

I have a .NET 4 class library project, which is used by multiple web projects. In this class library I need to get a DB connection string and it needs to be the same for all the web projects. Currently I've got it as a setting in each web.config file, but this is not ideal. Is there any way I can have that configuration stored with the DLL, but still allow it to be modified at runtime (ie. hardcoding the connection string is out)?

App.config seems to be generally ignored for a DLL, even though it does get renamed to assemblyname.dll.config and copied to the bin directory for the web. I tried making it an "application setting" (ie. using the auto-generated class derived from System.Configuration.ApplicationSettingsBase) and this appeared to work, but changing the value in the DLL .config file at runtime had no effect, so I suspect it's really just using the hardcoded default value of the setting.

Where To Store Connection String In Web.Config

Mar 25, 2011

We can store Connection String in Web.config file in two ways One is

<connectionStrings>
<clear/>
<add name="LocalSqlServer"
connectionString="Data Source=(local);Initial Catalog=aspnetdb;Integrated Security=True"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
</connectionStrings>

Other One is

<appSettings>
<add key="ConnectionString"
value="server=localhost;database=Northwind;uid=sa;password=secret;" />
</appSettings>

Now I want to know What is difference between these two approach? Which one is better way? What are their limitations?

UPDATE:Can you explain that <connectionString> has any significant advantage over <appSetting>?

C# - Best Way To Store Configuration Settings Outside Of Web.config?

Jun 6, 2010

I'm starting to consider creating a class library that I want to make generic so others can use it. While planning it out, I came to thinking about the various configuration settings that I would need. Since the idea is to make it open/shared, I wanted to make things as easy on the end user as possible. What's the best way to setup configuration settings without making use of web.config/app.config?

C# - Transferring Info In A ViewModel Between Views And Controllers In MVC 2 Site Without Allowing Modification Of Info?

Jul 22, 2010

I'm building an ASP.NET MVC 2 site where I'm currently implementing an OpenID sign-up form. Unfortunately, I'm foreseeing a possible security bug/vulnerability inside my architecture.

Here's how I want OpenID login to work:

User requests /Account/Login, Controller sends back OpenIDLogin View. User enters their OpenID into the View, then OpenID authorization takes place, and finally the OpenID is returned to the Controller.The Controller checks whether the OpenID is currently in use by a user in the system or not. If it is, the user is logged in to that account. If not, the registration process begins.

And now, the OpenID registration process:

The OpenID identifier, as well as any other information provided by the OpenID provider (such as email address or name), is put into my custom ViewModel and sent to my OpenIDRegistrationForm View.The RegistrationForm View stores the OpenID in a hidden field to make sure that it gets sent back to the Controller.The user fills in the RegistrationForm View and sends it back to the Controller.The Controller creates the user account and puts the OpenID into the database.

The bug that I see within my architecture is that a user could modify the hidden value in the RegistrationForm View. Thus, they could spoof their OpenID! I will make sure to add another round of checking to the final Registration Controller Action to make sure that the OpenID that is provided doesn't exist yet, but there is still a possibility for spoofing. Can my architecture be improved somehow? I don't want this to end badly...

One solution I'm considering is encrypting the OpenID before I send it to the View and then decrypting it when it reaches the Controller. Should I try this?

Security :: How To Store User Names And Passwords In Web.config

Mar 8, 2010

I'm trying to find out how i store user names and passwords in the web.config file. I have tried looking for documentation on this but haven't found any so far.

I see in the class library it says that the Authenticate method of the FormsAuthentication class is for use in authenticating credentials against those stored in the config file, but i don't know how to store them there to begin with. I want to store two username:password pairs in the web.config file preferably encrypted.

one of these username:password pairs i want to be hard coded. The other i want to be able to be reset with a password reset form which I will code later. I guess there maybe a method for creating a sername:password entry in the web.config which could be used with my password reset form if such a method exists. But I need to know how to hand code the username:password entries into the web.config file to begin with and to beable to create the hard coded pair.

code I need to add to my web.config file i need to add and in what section?

also can you point me in the direction of a method used for creating username:password entries in web.config

How To Programmatically Store (save) SMTP Server Details Back To Web.config

Nov 4, 2010

Searching StackOverflow, I found this question on how to Retrieve SMTP settings from Web.Config, but no details on how to update the SMTP back to the web.config file.

I started with the following code:

Configuration webConfig = WebConfigurationManager.OpenWebConfiguration("~");
MailSettingsSectionGroup settings =
(MailSettingsSectionGroup)webConfig.GetSectionGroup("system.net/mailSettings");
SmtpSection smtp = settings.Smtp;
SmtpNetworkElement net = smtp.Network;

but was quickly clued in by Intellisense that SmptSection.Network is a Get (aka "read-only") accessor.

So how am I supposed to programmatically write my SMTP data back to web.config?

Architecture :: Best Way To Implement Online Ordering For A Store Store Already Built?

Mar 19, 2010

hey folks I got a general question that maybe some of you can just weigh in. I developed an online store for a client and people place orders online for a food ordering place however I am trying to find the best way to have the orders show up for them at the store. Currently I am sending an email and an autoprint software prints it out which works most of the time but not good enough sometimes it doesn't print. Anyone had similar issues or have other alternative solutions you may have heard off? Like I said the site sends an email to the customer and the store's email account.

How To Create A Common Web.config File And A Bunch Of Specific Web.config Files

Feb 16, 2011

Currently, I work on an ASP.NET project which is hosted under version control and is used on several developer machines, tester machine and production environment.

In three cases, configuration (Web.config) may be different. For example, developer and tester environments use testing SQL Server, whereas in production environment, another SQL Server is accessed, so the connection string is different in those cases.

We want to keep three versions of Web.config in subversion. But modifying each of three files every time we need to add, remove or change a common setting is annoying: it would be nice to have a common, master Web.config, which will be inherited by each of the three Web.config files.

How to set up an ASP.NET project which will use a master configuration file and different slave configuration files on different machines, thus sharing the same project/source code/configuration files in subversion?

How To Determine Which Parent Config File Is Locking A Web.config Setting

Mar 15, 2011

When I open my ASP.NET site in IIS and try to open the .NET Trust Levels, I get an error message:

.NET Trust Levels There was an error while performing this operation.

Details:
Filename: ?C:inetpubwwwrootmyappweb.config
Line number: 445

Error: This configuration section cannot be used at this path. This happens when the section is locked at a parent level. Locking is either by default (overrideModeDefault="Deny"),or set explicitly by a location tag with overrideMode="Deny" or the legacy allowOverride="false".

I've checked a few places, but I haven't found anything that seems like it would be locking that setting. Is there a systematic way of determining where that setting is locked?

I'm using IIS 7.5 and .NET 3.5 sp1.
