VS 2008 Web Service To Trigger Background Time Events On Server
Apr 5, 2010
I have an application where I want to send an email reminder for an appointment 24 hours prior to the event. Users would log in and insert appointments. I would think I would want a background thread running on the server that would regularly check the database (say every hour) and generate an email if there is an event is due within the next day. From what I have read it seems like a Web service might do this. I guess I have a few questions
1) am I on the right track - is this an application for web services
2) can anyone point me to a good resource which can help me create the web service I would need. I would prefer if it is in VB and not C#.

I have got a query regarding the usage of delegate in usercontrols. The scenario is I have got a user control which acts as a footer
on all the pages, It has the following place holders : Email, Print, Logout.
What I want to acheive here is when the customer logged in he/she has certain feauture's on the website for instance his/her personal diary,
dieting charts, birthday calender etc. I have figured out a way to create pdf's of each summary , what I am looking for is how to use the usercontrol
for instance when the customer clicks on the email place holder on certain page which is in the footer usercontrol, the following place holder should send
an email with the pdf file of that particular page attached to the customer. I came to know that delegate is the best way of doing it, but I cant find any specific tutorial on it.

We have a web application that makes a call to a remotely hosted ASMX service that worked in Server 2003 under IIS6. We are now migrating it to a Server 2008/IIS 7 setup and it doesn't appear that the application makes the call to the remote web service anymore. We ran Wireshark and don't see any traffic to the service URL. It seems to throw a 404 error without trying to connect.
Is there some security policy or restriction in Server 2008 or IIS 7 we need to set to allow an ASP.NET application make a call to a remote web service? We are using Network Service as our application pool user, but also tried using Local System as a troubleshooting step. In addition, the same code works if run from a console application on the server instead of the web application.
Is there some setting under IIS7 or server 2008 that would be causing this?

I thought that Page_Load events executed every time a page was loaded not just the first time. Am I wrong on this?
I have a Page_Load event that writes text to a label to display on the screen: Output.Text &= "Welcome to my Website <br />" (Output being the ID of a Label control)
I also have an On_Click event for a button to display the same information: Output.Text &= "Welcome to my Website <br />"
After clicking the button, I expected to see the output twice. Once for the page being reloaded and once for the click event. I thought that Page_Load events executed every time a page was loaded not just the first time.

how to store only date into sql server 2008 from C# asp.net 3.5.
I want to store only date(like 26/05/1986) and only time (like 04:45:40 AM) into sql server 2008 .
I am using C# asp.net 3.5 as front end.But i am not getting how to convert datetime into only date and only time from front end application.
It should not be as a string from front end.it should be as a date type / time type.
I can not see only date or only time data type in VS 2008.
how to store only date or only time into sql server 2008 having only date or only time as a data type.

I am trying to retrieve some values from a Database built in SQL Server Express 2008 using .net Web Service.
[Code]...
Whenever i click run in Visual Studio 2008, it shows the startup page in IE that has two Methods (HelloWorld and authorizePassenger). When i click my method authorizePassenger it gets invoked and it asks me for input but when i input and click invoke IE shows HTTP500 error. The code above working fine in Standalone VB.net Application, so i guess i m doing the coding of Database correctly.

I am integrating SqlCacheDependency to use in my LinqToSQL datacontext.I am using an extension class for Linq querys found here - http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/linqtosqlcacheI have wired up the code and when I open the page I get this exception - "The SQL Server Service Broker for the current database is not enabled, and as a result query notifications are not supported. Please enable the Service Broker for this database if you wish to use notifications."its coming from this event in the global.asax
protected void Application_Start()
{
RegisterRoutes(RouteTable.Routes);
//In Application Start Event
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDependency.Start(new dataContextDataContext().Connection.ConnectionString);
}
my question is...how do i enable Service Broker in my SQL server 2008 database? I have tried to run this query.. ALTER DATABASE tablename SET ENABLE_BROKER but it never ends and runs for ever, I have to manually stop it.once I have this set in SQL server 2008, will it filter down to my DataContext, or do I need to configure something there too ?

We have an issue with a .NET 2.0 web service application that is generating a module not found exception when we try to load on server 2008. A second server running the same 2008 version loads the service fine.As part of the investigation we have taken the default hello world .NET 2.0 web service and deployed to both servers and have exactly the same issue with it running fine on one but not the other. The issue is trying to track down the module in question. Running process explorer and dependency walker doesn't seem to give us a clue.
The full error is:-

How to wire up HTML server controls events?
I added a Input (Text) control in my web form and turned it into an HTML server control so its an instance of HtmlInputText class.
If I double click on the control It only adds a OnClick event handler method inside the script tags in the HTML doc of the web form but how to I get to handle its Serverchange event exactly? does VS.net 2008 has no ability to auto wire up the event to the control, do I have to manually wire up the event handler?

Just I started learning MVC pattern, of course i am learning it from Microsoft's website.Just i want to gather quiz information from the experts. My understanding is (correct me then and there)
1 ) MVC does not support server side events, but supports client side events. If it supports client side events, I need html page with jQuery/Javascript (view), but most of the example I absorbed is to display the information(model) in view, I did not see any client side event handling happens in view.
2) Except ViewState and controlState, MVC supports Sessions, Application State management, Cache management.
3) When request goes to MVC engine, the routing module routes the request that is picked up by the controller. The controller in executes the appropriate action and returns the appropriate view.

I have an web application which needs some calculations and processing on data. This job is a long running job(few hours). Job is initiated by user.
Requirement.
User Clicks on Process Data.
Some functions are called to start data processing.
Data Processing runs for hours.
User is given feedback of percentage completed etc.
Even if user logs off and then again log on he should get this feedback.
The requirement is somewhat similar to Spiceworks. Where it runs in background to detect the devices/computers in network and the user is notified in his page about the progress. But spicework uses windows service. We don't want to us windows service.
Now the question is.
What if user closes the page, will the task still run in background. This task has to be completed fully.If terminated in between output will not have any meaning. How to actually to design this long running process. In ASP.Net environment. Also is there a way to show all/same user who logs in the status of processing.

I have a text box and ajax autocomplete control extender in my Master Page that it is not working at all. When I type some characters on the text box it doesn't trigger the autocomplete. I have a web service that contains the function code. I est my code on a single Web Page (No Master Page) and it works perfectly. Also, it works fine if I include the text box and the extender on the Content Page instead of on the Master Page. It is important to keep the text box in the Master Page for me. I am using Visual Studio 2008 and ASP 3.5. MASTER PAGE.
