VS 2008 - How To Populate Literal Control In Master Page With Db Data
Jan 21, 2010
I am using BlogEngine.net and just created a theme (site.master) file and works but when I add a literal control and try to call a function from App_Code I get a 'Compiler Error Message: BC30002: Type 'basicFunctions' is not defined.' error. I call functions from basic_functions.vb in normal .aspx pages at the root. Since my error page is in a subfolder that has it's own App_Code folder, do I have to do something different?

In my child page i have an imageButton, which is surrounded by the UpdatePanel. When the user clicks on the image button a record is removed from my database.
<asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="Content" runat="server">
<asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel1" runat="server">
<Triggers><asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="btnRemove" /></Triggers>
<ContentTemplate>

In my master page i have literal control which displays the records for the current user (something like Records: 10)
The RecordsCount control is updated on the page Load event of the MasterPage
Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
RecordsCount.Text = GetRecordsCount()
End Sub
How can i update the RecordsCount control? I mean i use postbacks for removing records from the database. And currently the RecordsCount control will be updated if the user hits the Refresh button of the Internet browser. How could i apply the Jquery Highlight on the RecordsCount control when the user clicks on the btnRemove button on the child-page?
UPDATE: Well the first question is solved by using javascript

I have a page that will display up to 4 videos at a time.. BUT i would like to see if there is any way to calculate and set the width and height according to the number of videos im presenting..
If only one video, i want it to take up the entire width and height of the space i have allocated.. ( say thats 1000w x 800h )
If im displaying 2 videos, then split that space up between the 2 and so on.. keeping the aspec ratio so not to distort the video window..
Right now im hard coding each one 400x300 which looks good when there are 4 laid out on the page.. just want to see how doable is this to accomplish..

I am being redirected from page1 to page2 as follows:
Response.Redirect(Request.ApplicationPath +
"/page2.aspx?Code=" + searchTextBox.Text);
In page2, I would like to populate a textbox i.e. txtCode using the passed in value from page1.
This is what I am doing:
txtCode.text = Request.QueryString["Code"].ToString();
Question:
Lets say I am redirected from page1 to page2 and so the txtCode is populated. Then I press a button to populate a grid based on this txtCode value. So far so good.
Now for my second page, while in page2, I change the value of txtCode and press the button. The code still retrieves the value from querystring which is the previous value and I do not want that.
Do you know how to solve this ?
there is a requiredvalidator control on txtCode which says it has to have a value.
And I do not mind using a session if it is easier to solve this problem.
This is what I have in page2.aspx

I want to have 4 links in the sidebar of master page which every other form (content page) in my web application inherits.
<table>
<tr>
<td width= "150px">
<asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="ContentPlaceHolder1" runat="server">
<asp:Menu runat="server" ID="MainMenu1" CssClass="MasterContent" StaticSubMenuIndent="30px">
<Items>
<asp:MenuItem Text="My Software" NavigateUrl="~/MySoftware.aspx"></asp:MenuItem>
<asp:MenuItem Text="Check Out" NavigateUrl="~/CheckOut.aspx"></asp:MenuItem>
<asp:MenuItem Text="View Shopping Cart" NavigateUrl="~/ShoppingCart.aspx"></asp:MenuItem>
<asp:MenuItem Text="Continue Shopping" NavigateUrl="~/Start.aspx"></asp:MenuItem>
</Items>
</asp:Menu>
</asp:ContentPlaceHolder>
</td>
<td width="900px">
<asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="ContentPlaceHolder2" runat="server">
</asp:ContentPlaceHolder>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
This is the content in the master page as you can see there are 4 menu items i tried to form as sidebar and i tried to inherit in home.aspx(one of the content pages) as follows:
<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="Start.aspx.cs" Inherits="WebStore._Start"
MasterPageFile="~/Webstore.Master" %>
<asp:Content ID="StartSideBar" runat="server" ContentPlaceHolderID="ContentPlaceHolder1">
But unfortunately the sidebar is not at all getting displayed. I know i'm doing fundamentally wrong some where. My intention is to have web pages to have sidebar like this. It is a screenshot of my intended page.

I know this is gonna be easy for some of you. I have a page that I am making for a timekeep site for my organization. The site pulls the user's username. I have a table in MSSQL that has the users informaton. This table has an ID for each user. I need to get the ID to display in a text box or literal so that I can use it in a query. Once it is in the control. I will use it to make the entry into another table that records the users time.
There may be an easier way to do it. I am just starting out and do not know how to do it.

I have a website written in C# that was running fine on one server. We moved it to another server and have a couple issues. I am mainly a VB.NET coder but can do a few things in C#. This is not a project - it is a website and can open it in VS2008 no problem. This is an admin site for the whole website where the user can add customer comments, etc. When logging in, it works fine. I can go to one of the admin pages after logging in and works. If I go to two other different pages, I get this error:
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
[Code]....
It turns out this is in the main.master page and it is used by the other pages that load fine. The ApplicationTitle variable is set right in the web.config file and like I said, it shows on the other pages.
My question is why would this code work fine for some pages and not two others? All of these admin pages are under a folder called Admin and the web.config file is in the root folder of the website. Its almost like these two pages cannot see the web.config file in the root folder? Why would that be if thats the case?
Btw, when I have this loaded in VS2008 and try to do a Build, it says:
It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.
I would assume the folders on the server are set right since all but two .aspx pages run fine. Just something I thought I would mention. This does not really seem to be a coding issue but something not set right especially since it ran on the other server just fine.

I have made a mvc 2 asp.net application on a development server 2008 R2. The site works fine with IIS 7 and windows 2008 R2 on the development server... When I deploy the app to a remote accept. server, routing seems to be broken and only the master page with no contentplaceholders are rendered. I only see a empty Master page. It looks like the accountcontroller is not fired and no View is returned.

3. TestUserContrl.ascx -> It is the UserControl present within the TestMaster.master page.

I have a Web Site project, and within it I have a user Web Control defined in an ascx file.The control is added to the Site.Master, and it shows up correctly on the page and everything is fine.I need to override some of the control's fields on one of the pages that derive from Site.Master.
// In OnLoad:
MyControlName control = (MyControlName) Page.Master.GetBaseMasterPage().FindControl("controlID"));
The issue is that MyControlName doesn't register as a valid Type on the child page. If I add a second instance of the control to the child page directly, the above works as needed, but if the control isn't placed directly on the page, and instead is only defined in the master page, the type is undefined. The control is not in a namespace, and is defined within the project, so I don't know why it is having such an issue location the appropriate type.If I put a breakpoint in the OnLoad, the type listed for the control is ASP.my_control_name_ascx, but using that does not work either. Why can't the child class reference the correct type? Can I fix this?

I've got a dropdownlist control that the user can select an an employee name and that should then fill in the detailsview control with specific information about that employee.
My dropdownlist control works fine and I do have AutoPostBack set to true. For some reason my detailsview doesn't work. There's no error message. The detailsview control just doesn't show up.
Here's my code:
