Visual Studio :: Can't Add An Connection To Database

Mar 31, 2011

I used Data Connections to connect a database but couldn't make it.

1. I used Windows Authentication to log on to database, my database's name wasn't displayed in Select or enter a database name dropdown menu, so I enter my database's name then I pressed Test Connection button, it said "This connection can't be tested because the specified database doesn't exist or isn't visible to the specified user."

2. So I used SQL Server Authentication to log on to the server, then I put my database's name in Select or enter a database name dropdown menu box, then press OK it's said that "Login failed for user 'xxx' or Try to press Test Connection button it said that "Login failed for user 'xxx'.

I'm sure that I use a correct username and password and I think it's a problem about VS can't see my database in SQLExpress2008.

Visual Studio :: Northwind Database Not Showing Up In VWDE2008 Add Connection Box

Mar 5, 2010

I am a complete newbie when it comes to ASP.NET and SQL database access. I'm trying to learn so that I might become gainfully employed one day soon and better my life. I'm running through the Visual Web Developer Express 2008 beginning walkthroughs right now and I'm already stuck on the third one -- Walkthrough: Basic Data Access in Web Pages. I've installed MS SQL Server 2008 and downloaded the sample Northwind and pubs databases, and even (I think) attached the pre-built files using the DOS command: sqlcmd -S .SQLEXPRESS -i instnwd.sql. (Output was: Changed database context to 'master'. Changed database context to 'Northwind'.)

But, now, when I try to Add Connection through the Database Explorer in VWDE2008, nothing comes up in the Connect to a Database field. Shouldn't it auto-populate? If I'm supposed to manually type a name in there, what should it be? I've tried "Northwind" and "SQLEXPRESS" with no luck (getting a generic Unable to Connect message). I've verified the database is running with SQL Server Configuration Manager and that all Client Protocols are enabled.

Visual Studio :: Can't Open A SourceSafe 6 Database With Visual Studio 2005?

May 25, 2010

I know both these software are old and that I can update to newer version. But I need to do it with those software in particular.I have Visual Studio 2005 and Visual SourceSafe 6 installed on my computer. When I try to open Visual SourceSafe 6 database using Visual SourceSafe 6 directly, I have no problem at all. Then I try to open a project solution I took from SourceSafe using Visual Studio 2005. Right away I receive this messageThe solution appears to be under source control, but its binding information cannot be found. It is possible that the MSSCCPRJ.SCC file or another item that holds the source control settings for the solution, has been deleted. Because it is not possible to recover this missing information automatically, the projects whose bindings are missing will be treated as not under source control.

Then an invite to chose a SourceSafe Database open. I click on BROWSE. First thing I noticed : The SourceSafe available databases list is empty (while I remind, it's not in SourceSafe 6. I can see there the COMMON database and the VSS database which is located on a different server on our network. Before that, I went in TOOLS->OPTIONS->SOURCE CONTROL, and make sure Visual Source Safe was selected as the Plug-in to use for a Source Control). So I click again on Browse, and locate my srcsafe.ini file. Everything is OK. It evens confirm me that my database path is
\dev2k3programmationVSS and that my database name is indeed VSS. So it found it. I then click on OK.

But when I do, the Database is not added to my available list, at all. The result, I can never select a source control, ever, which end in me not being able to work connected to the main source control of our network. Everything is working fine on every other computer in our company. Only this one have problem.Did I give enough description to my problem? I really need help on this one, because working disconnected from Source Safe can give a lot of pain to our team. Can anyone give me an hand? If you need any more info, just ask.

Visual Studio :: DataContext And Connection String Changes

Jan 8, 2010

I am using LINQ to SQL in a project. I create a new DataContext class (a "DBML").

This is a DotNetNuke portal, module project. DNN has a standard connection string named "SiteSQLServer." Of course, I want my DataContext class to use this same connection string.

In Server Explorer in Visual Studio, I have a connection to the development database. Of course, that connection knows nothing of the "SiteSQLServer" connection string in web.config.

When I drag a table into the DBML design screen, I get a popup message that the table I'm dragging in is from a different connection, and is it OK if it changes the connection string? If I say "No," then the table never comes in to the designer. If I say "OK," then Visual Studio adds a new connection string to my web.config file. Then I must click in the open area of the designer, then go to the Properties window and reset the connection string. If I miss this, then in testing everything works. But when I deploy to a production server, the connection fails. But even if I do not miss this, that extra connection string remains in my web.config file.

Is there a way to get Visual Studio to drop the table into the designer, and leave web.config alone?

Visual Studio :: Add Connection / Use SQL Server Authentication - Fails On Windows 7 Pro

May 5, 2010

I'm using VS 2010 RTM and SQL Server 2008 on my clean development laptop, running Windows 7 Pro.

Using Visual Studio's Server Explorer, I can easily do an Add Connection by simply right-clicking, and then completing the dialog, and choosing "Use Windows Authentication". I can then click the button "Test Connection".

However, if I wish to do an Add Connection, and then choose "Use SQL Server Authentication", I get a message "Login failed for user 'appSlir'", as shown here:

When I try the same thing on my other development machine, which is VS 2008, SQL Server 2008, and Windows XP Pro, it works fine.

There seems to be a problem/bug that prevents Add Connection with "Use SQL Server Authentication" to SQL Server 2008, when running on Windows 7 Pro.

Visual Studio :: Create Connection String To Perform Test With Text Book?

I have installed VS 2010 Ultimate and it came with SQL 2008. what version it is and also how to create a connection in place to keep using the Oreilly examples to hopefully learn how to develop in C#. I have been learning but it is getting more difficult. I try to follow the steps but it just does not make sense. provide some easy steps to check version and connection method to sql using 2010,

I did see a post for sql management(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx FamilyID=08e52ac2-1d62-45f6-9a4a-4b76a8564a2b&displaylang=en). I am going to download to hopefully be able to view the database. We have sql server 2008 at work and I have used the studio management for sql to run queries and would like to do the same with the version that was installed with the installation of 2010 ultimate. I can get the connection to the database so I can start learning how to build a dictionary and list for some queries. My goal is to create a aspx file that will show entries in a database we have at work.

Visual Studio :: How To Connect To A Database Via MS Visual Web Developer

Jul 22, 2010

I need to connect to a third-party hosted database. The VPN tunnel is already set up and an IP address has been provided to me, but I'm not sure how to access the database through the tool.

I have tried the Database Solutions tab > Data Connections > and the one listed under this is called "ASPNETD8.MDF", but when I click on this, I get this error message:

"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. DataSource Controls :: Connecting To SQL Server In Visual Studio 2008 Using Code - Error: 25 - Connection String Is Not Valid

Feb 2, 2010

Background: I use SQL server 2005 developer edition and visual studio 2008. Visual studio 2008 is running on a local machine with Vista business edition. SQL server is running on a remote server using Windows server 2003. Both computers are within the same domain.

Problem: First, I used the server explorer to connect to the SQL server. Everything works as desired. Then I write code to do the same thing. I keep getting the following error message:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid)

However, I used the exactly identical connection string as the one used in the server explorer. So connection string should not be the problem. In addition, I tried the test code in MSDN, which tells whether my domainusername can flow the network. It turns out the user name is fine. I also went to the SQL server management studio and found the login for my computer is NVCWeihao while my computer login name is NVCweihao. I am wondering if this uppercase letter really affects the connection.

DataSource Controls :: ODBC SQL Connection To Connect A SQL 2005 Database To .NET App In Visual Web Developer Express?

Jun 15, 2010

I'm using an ODBC connection to connect a SQL 2005 database to my ASP.NET app in Visual Web Developer Express. I'm finding that the expected functionality that tutorials review does not work for ODBC connected databases the same way as it does for SQL databases created in the Web Developer. For example, I can't use stored procedures because the option to create one is disabled in the Web Developer, and if I create the stored procedure in SQL Server Management Studio Express, it doesn't show up in Web Developer because Web Developer only finds the system stored procedures, not the user-defined ones. I've seen other cases as well where database management options in Web Developer don't work with ODBC databases.

Am I missing something in my setup, or is there an inherent limitation with ODBC connected databases? Or, is this a limitation with using the Express versions of these development tools?

Visual Studio :: Linq To Sql Won't Let Me Select Connection String "None" Option?

May 19, 2010

I've noticed that VS2008 removes the "none" option in the properties -> connection dropdownlist after you have modified a LinqToSql class where the "none" option was previously specified. So if i create a LinqToSql class, drag some db tables in, then set the connection to "none" in the properties window, save, then make a change to the db tables i've dragged into the class, i can't get it to go back to "none" again.I've noticed this behavior sporadically, not all the time. Havent isolated when it happens yet.The none option is required if you want to save your connection string in the web.config, and not in the designer.cs class or the .dbml file.
