View 2 RepliesI have installed VS 2010 Ultimate and it came with SQL 2008. what version it is and also how to create a connection in place to keep using the Oreilly examples to hopefully learn how to develop in C#. I have been learning but it is getting more difficult. I try to follow the steps but it just does not make sense. provide some easy steps to check version and connection method to sql using 2010,
I did see a post for sql management(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx FamilyID=08e52ac2-1d62-45f6-9a4a-4b76a8564a2b&displaylang=en). I am going to download to hopefully be able to view the database. We have sql server 2008 at work and I have used the studio management for sql to run queries and would like to do the same with the version that was installed with the installation of 2010 ultimate. I can get the connection to the database so I can start learning how to build a dictionary and list for some queries. My goal is to create a aspx file that will show entries in a database we have at work.
When I open an ASP.NET 3.5 project using VWD2010, I get a prompt error message,"The connection property in the web.config file is missing or incorrect.The connection string from the .dbml file has been used in its place."however, my project works successfully.
View 1 RepliesI am using LINQ to SQL in a project. I create a new DataContext class (a "DBML").
This is a DotNetNuke portal, module project. DNN has a standard connection string named "SiteSQLServer." Of course, I want my DataContext class to use this same connection string.
In Server Explorer in Visual Studio, I have a connection to the development database. Of course, that connection knows nothing of the "SiteSQLServer" connection string in web.config.
When I drag a table into the DBML design screen, I get a popup message that the table I'm dragging in is from a different connection, and is it OK if it changes the connection string? If I say "No," then the table never comes in to the designer. If I say "OK," then Visual Studio adds a new connection string to my web.config file. Then I must click in the open area of the designer, then go to the Properties window and reset the connection string. If I miss this, then in testing everything works. But when I deploy to a production server, the connection fails. But even if I do not miss this, that extra connection string remains in my web.config file.
Is there a way to get Visual Studio to drop the table into the designer, and leave web.config alone?
I downloaded a trial version of Visual Studio 2010, created a new c# Solution and then wanted to add an ASP.NET Web Site. I am Folllowing an example in a book: ASP.NET 3.5 Enterprise Application Development with Visual Studio 2008.In the book they write that a template for createing an c# ASP.NET Web Site would be found, but whereever I search for o template in VisualStudio I cant find that for c#, I could find it for VisualBasic but that is not wath I want!

View 4 RepliesI was interested in creating a banner ad. I understand that you need an HTML editor. I have no familiarity with this at all. I was looking in Visual Studio and see under Add New Item if you click on Web you can add an HTML page. Should I perhaps create a new project as an ASP.NET Web Application and then add a HTML page. Would I be able to go that route and create a banner ad and publish it to my website.
I tried doing this and using Web Deploy while doing a Publish. I had a successful Publish but when I navigated to the URL I just saw a blank page.
If this isn't the route you should go and you should instead use an independent HTML editor is there one that you could recommend?
I've tried all kinds of searches on this site and with Bing and don't seem to get any hits that meet my condition. So pardon me if this is a rather basic question. I'm rather new at ASP.NET programming.I want to experiment with putting up to a live site. GoDaddy gives you free hosting if you get the URL from them. The catch is the hosting only supports IIS 7.0 with .Net 2.0/3.0/3.5. I've uploaded all kinds of plain websites with no problem. So in Visual
Studio 2010 I selected the following options while creating a new project:
<customErrors mode="Off" />
<!--<compilation debug="true" targetFramework="4.0">-->
<compilation debug="true" >
<assemblies>
<add assembly="System.Web.Abstractions, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" />
<add assembly="System.Web.Routing, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" />
<add assembly="System.Web.Mvc, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" />
</assemblies>
</compilation>
I tried various solutions offered on the web for other issues like setting References "Copy Local = true" to upload various binaries.
Have just loaded VWD 2010 and tried to create an SQL DB, the following error occurs "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user interface. The connection will be closed."

Maybe it's now allowed? I can't work with solutions at all then?
I'm using Visual Studio 2008, and my database is SQL Server 2000.
I want to add a connection to the Server Explorer in VS. The Data source is Microsoft SQL Server (SqlClient). After entering in all my information and I click Test Connection, it is successful.
But when I click OK, I get the error:
Unable to add data connection. ExecuteScalar requires an open and available connection. The connection's current state is closed.
Background: I use SQL server 2005 developer edition and visual studio 2008. Visual studio 2008 is running on a local machine with Vista business edition. SQL server is running on a remote server using Windows server 2003. Both computers are within the same domain.
Problem: First, I used the server explorer to connect to the SQL server. Everything works as desired. Then I write code to do the same thing. I keep getting the following error message:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid)
However, I used the exactly identical connection string as the one used in the server explorer. So connection string should not be the problem. In addition, I tried the test code in MSDN, which tells whether my domainusername can flow the network. It turns out the user name is fine. I also went to the SQL server management studio and found the login for my computer is NVCWeihao while my computer login name is NVCweihao. I am wondering if this uppercase letter really affects the connection.
Is it just me or is the Web User Control item template missing from Web Application Projects in Visual Studio 2010? Does anyone know how to create a user control in a 2010 web app?

View 1 RepliesI've noticed that VS2008 removes the "none" option in the properties -> connection dropdownlist after you have modified a LinqToSql class where the "none" option was previously specified.So if i create a LinqToSql class, drag some db tables in, then set the connection to "none" in the properties window, save, then make a change to the db tables i've dragged into the class, i can't get it to go back to "none" again.I've noticed this behavior sporadically, not all the time. Havent isolated when it happens yet.The none option is required if you want to save your connection string in the web.config, and not in the designer.cs class or the .dbml file.

View 1 RepliesI just recently upgrade my asp.net web project from visual studio 2005 to visual studio 2010. The upgrade was successful with no problems however im missing some features with this project. The One Click Publish feature(which is greyed out) in the header area of Visual Studio 2010 and the Add Config Transforms feature which is no where to be seen when you right click on web.config. When i create a new web project straight from visual studio 2010, these options work fine.
