Visual Studio :: How To Watch Content Of Session Variable
Sep 3, 2010
I was debugging my web project and faced a problem that I don't know how to watch content of hashtables or similar data structures.
For example, I have assigned before that Session["errorMessage"]="Hewstone we have a problem here...". What is my actions in order to watch that string in watches list?

I added a watch expression for HttpContext.Current.Session
I can see the Count being equal to 2 but I can't find the actual content. Where do I find the content of the session while debugging?

Is there any way to monitor asp.net session state in order to watch object size, or is there any other practice to find out a way to lighten asp.net session?

I'm having issues with the Express version of Visual Studio 2005 ever since I had reinstalled Windows 2000. For some reason, while debugging I can't view variable contents if I hover my cursor over that certain variable, it just marks the variable with a square, but it won't show the DataTip no matter what. I had tried to restore my import/export settings, reinstall Visual Studio, but nothing seems to have helped, and I can only view variable contents using the QuickWatch window, or by putting it into the watch list, but to be honest this is extremely annoying. I haven't had this on my previous Win2k installation, and so far I couldn't find out why this occurs.

I have a JavaScript wrapper that I initialize on body load and set to a global variable.
Just after creating the object, I have full intellisense, but when referring to it later, from another function, the intellisense is lost. I presume this is because of dynamic typing:
var myWrapper;
function onload() {
myWrapper = new Wrapper(args);
myWrapper. //intellisense here.
}
function whatever() {
myWrapper. //intellisense lost.
}
I get round this by pretending to create the object again before my code, and then deleting the line:
function whatever() {
myWrapper = new Wrapper(); //pretend to create object again.
myWrapper. //intellisense returns!
}
Has the inference been improved in vs 2010, or is there any way to tell Javascript about the type of object I'm currently working on?

I am using vb.net/asp.net 2005. I have a master page that displays a child content page. The child content page contains a user control that I created. In the user control I would like to access a variable that is set in the Master page.

Is there a way to not show the masterpage when working in design view in visual 2008?
I'm working on a pretty small screen resolution and the master page is taking up a lot of the space.
I would just like to display my content, whit out the masterpage. you can't edit it anyway , so it's pretty useless.
I have been going trough the settings of visual studios 2008 but i haven't had any success there.
i know this feature wasn't possible in 2005 so i'm having my hopes up for 2008.

Currently in an .aspx file, I am storing a value (filename that was created in that session) in an hidden text box. When the user clicks on the "Print" labeled Hyperlink control, it opens the file that was stored in the hidden text box control. But when the user goes to different screen (in the same session), I loose the filename value that is stored in the hidden text box control. So I would like to store the filename variable in a session variable. So that if the user leaves this .aspx file and comes back to this .aspx file I can load the value into the hidden text box from the session variable.

I am wondering if it's possible to work on Content Place Holder window without seeing master page template?
The second problem i've noticed is that when i try to add a table (1 row, 3 columns) to my content place holder and then try to adjust the width of those columns the whole layout of my page is getting messed up to the point that i have to use ctrl+x to go back to previous stage. The master page was very complicated but i finally got it to work and i don't understand why while i manipulate contentplaceholder the layout of the master page is being affected. (only when adjusting tables)I am new to Visual Studio and was wondering of any known standars in that matter.

I have a masterpage with a content area. When viewing a page in the designer the content area is so narrow it blows the page formatting to pieces. When viewed in a browser it looks fine, just looks bad in the designer.
I've seen other projects on other computers that don't have this problem ... is there a setting for this?

OS: Windows 7
VS: VS 2010 Pro SP1 - IIS Express
I am debugging my project, the first page is a login page which I login and I can see from debug that the session is being set, after the redirect to the homepage the session seems to be lost and I am taken back to the login page.
If I run outside of VS on our sandbox or production server the login works fine. It only seems to be my machine w/ VS that does not like the sessions.

After I imported a VS 2008 web project to VS 2010, I can't view aspx pages that have master pages in design mode. The page design mode displays "error creating control - contentplacehoder1 object reference not set to an instance of an object." The project builds and runs fine though. I have only one master page that all other aspx pages reference and I don't have any nested master pages.

Usually using Visual Studio's debugger is a breeze. Scanning through Locals quickly shows the values of variables, etc. However, I'm at a loss how to find out the values contained in session state variables? Can anyone give me a hand?Lets say I put a breakpoint right after:
Session("first_name") = "Rob Roy"
How do I view the value contained in Session("first_name") from locals?

I have a web application which uses a session variable to store the logged in userid. If no user is logged in, of course this variable will be empty and the contents displayed on my website are meant for guests. If there is a user logged in, the user specific controls/access/links will then be a displayed.
I am now having issues with my hosting where on shared application pool, the worker recycle is triggered every 90 minutes, this will clear sessions causing all my users to be logged out. I opted for a dedicated application pool, which got worse because I am only allocated 50MB memory limit and if this is reached, the worker recycle is triggered and I lose my sessions again. I have tried as much as possible optimization techniques, e.g. dispose where possible, close connections, disable viewstate for static controls etc but my memory per instance keeps building up from page to page without any signs of improvement. I don't use loops nor store huge objects like bitmaps etc but my sessions are now gone even faster than 90 minutes in shared application pool before.
I have considered using SQL Session State but there isn't a simple guide on using this with MySQL. I am getting desperate and considering using a public variable, a string as a replacement to store logged in user id instead of in a session variable. I am pretty sure this will solve my issue with sessions being recycled but are there any negative consequences of doing this? One problem I can think of is if the user closes the browser, the system will never know that the user is now logged out and this public variable should be nothing. In this scenario, will the GC eventually clear this abandoned public variable.
