Visual Studio :: The Intellisense Doesn't Work At The App_Code Folder Level
Feb 22, 2010
My problem is that the intellisense is not enabled within the App_Code folder, so to twick this problem I initially create a separate folder where I develop my classes then I move them to the App_Code but, but I'm convinced that this is not the right practice so how to configure visual studio 2008 to enable intellisense at the App_Code folder

I'm curious why the intellisense feature isn't available in the source view for the mark up. It would be nice if while you are typing something similar to the following could happen. While setting a property such as the DataSourceID that it would bring up the possible data sources that already defined on the page.

I think my main problem is actually more to do with master pages that anything else.. Below is a description:
If you use master pages in your website and you have pages in different sub directories then the simplest way to add JQuery references is using <script src='<%# ResolveUrl ("jq.js")%> /> in the master page header??
This means that the .js files are correctly referenced in all pages that use the master. My main problem is that intellisense only seems to work for JQuery when the JQ Script is actually referenced in the header and not by using ResolveUrl('') <script src="/scripts/jq.js" />
I dont want to have to live without intellisense, Surely there is a way to get around this. What am I doing wrong.

I'm so new at this it's pretty pathitic. I have Visual Studio 2008 Team edition and I'm following the walkthough in the help file about how to create your first basic site.All went well until I got to that part about "Put the insertion point after asp:Label in the <asp:Label> tag, and then press SPACEBAR.
A drop-down list appears that displays the list of properties you can set for aLabel control. This feature, referred to as IntelliSense, helps you inSource view with the syntax of server controls, HTML elements, and other items on the page. The following screen shot shows the IntelliSense drop-down list for theLabel control.IntelliSense for Label control"

I've searched but not found much that helps, could be using wrong search terms.Anyway, currently using Visual Studio 2005 and VB, but just got Visual Studio 2010 and trying to use C# and am having problems using classes, I think I'm missing something simple here.
In both 2005 & 2010 I create a new website and a Default.aspx, in 2005 using VB, C# in 2010.
Right-click the project -> Add New Item -> Class, and leave it as Class1.vb/Class1.cs
Both 2005 & 2010 prompt to place it in the App_Code folder, so choose yes.
Here are the class files, I've not changed anything apart from create a very simple function:
Class1.vb code: [Code]....
Class1.cs code: [Code]....
In my VB project Default.aspx.vb: [Code]....
No errors, and debugging shows that a = "hello"
My Default.aspx.cs: [Code]....
This gives an error:Error 1 The name 'tester' does not exist in the current context D:Visual Studio 2010WebSite11Default.aspx.cs
How do I reference the tester function within Class1 in my C# project?

I am a developer who up until now only used WAP assemblies. Is that old and outdated nowadays? For example I have found a really great sample of google map API I'l like to use but my project is in VB.NET and the sample is using code in App_Code folder in C# so I cannot mix and integrate in a easy way. Do I have to convert the C# code into VB.Net to make it work or is there a shortcut when finding sample code in App_Code folder in the wrong code language?

When using VS2008 and C# I choose File - New - Web Site.I use namespaces in the aspx files in the same folder.The problem is that the aspx files in one folder can not access the aspx files in other folders even though the files in each of the other folders use the same namespace followed by the folder name.
In fact, if I am in one folder and type the namespaces followed by a period, the other folder names are not displayed in intellisense, only the name of the folder name of the aspx file in which it resides is displayed on the intellisense.
How can I get the other folder names to show in intellisense from any other folder that I am working in when coding in the code behind? fyi, in the html inherit I point to the namespace, the folder name and the code behind file then in the code behind file I code the namespace, the folder name the aspx file is in and the class is the name of the code behind file.

When I edit in a asp file, the intellisense does not work for any ADODB objects with vs2008(sp1) in Windows 7.For example:Set conn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.connection")
.. And next line I keyin "conn". Then keyin ".", but it does not popup the intellisense menu for ADODB.connection.But, the native objects for asp, such as Request, Response, Session, Server.. etc., them popup the intellisense menu correctly.Or some other objects, such as "CDO.Message", them work fine !

I know I've seen this in one of the video tutorials but I have no idea which one and I have reinstalled VS since then. I think it was Chris Pels that showed how to set up VS so that you had IntelliSense for XML files. The reason I ask is because I'm going through the Security tutorials series and working on the web.config file and the editor doesn't highlight the closing or opening tag when you click on one or the other like it does for HTML or C#.
Not sure if I'm explaining this clearly or not. When working with HTML or C# I can click on the opening tag for an element, say a div tag and VS will bold the type of the closing div tag. This makes it easy to be sure that I'm not messing up my tags. Well this doesn't happen with an XML document. I saw in one of the videos where the author configured the settings in VS so that IntelliSense would work in an XML document. I just don't remember the path to those settings or what changes were made.

I have a question. When I create my website using vwd 2008 express, I can not create App_Code folder, actually there's no selection for App_Code folder when I right click on my website(only Theme, App_Resources, App_LocalResources, App_GlobalResources and disabled App_Data).
I try to add new folder and name it App_Code, then put a class in there. But I can reference to it in my code behind.
Is there something wrong with my VWD installment or this is not supported by Express version?

I have a simple web app project in Visual Studio 2010 (converted from 2008 project). For some reason when I publish the app, Visual Studio doesn't copy the App_Theme -folder to the publish destination folder. This will cause the app to fail when deployed to production environment.
App_Theme is considered as "system" folder by VS (shown as grey), which means that I can't manually set it's publish properties.
how to get VS to copy App_Theme -folder when deploying?

It seems that Intellisense just doesn't work within attributes in an ASP.NET page. I really like strong typing, because I like Intellisense, and so I generally make sure to bind to a strongly typed object in ASP.NET:
<Repeater ID="rep" runat="server">
<ItemTemplate>
<div id="mydiv" class="<%# TypedObject.Class %>" runat="server">
<%# TypedObject.Name %>
</div>
</ItemTemplate>
</Repeater>
Intellisense just works within the body of the div, but no matter what I do it will not work to set that class attribute. This is very annoying, since attributes are pretty fundamental in HTML, and many of the built in controls use them heavily. I can't find anything about this, but I can't believe this isn't a pretty fundamental need. Is there any way to get this to work?

I'm trying to build a windows application running in Windows 7 that access the TFS work items and I'm getting an error messenge that says:
Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Client, Version=9.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies.
I dig up a little bit to find out what is happening and I found out that the assembly must have a strong name which I'm still trying to understand how to give one to it but before that I tried to run the same code but as aweb application and it's running just fine. Running the same windows application in
windows Vista also works. Debuging the windows application in windows 7 code the error throws when a rotine that has an object been stantiated to the class TeamFoundationServer is called. This class is into the Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Client.dll which is the dll that I should give the strong name, and may be solve the problem. What I would like to know is if it already have happened with you to some reference doesn't work to a specifc kind of application and if giving a strong name solved your problem or from your experience what might be occurring?

I replaced VS Express 2008 with 2010 on my Win 7 laptop a few weeks ago. I have a small simple website with just a master page and a default page. After making changes to the CSS file, it took no effect at all on my webpage's font and colors when viewing it in design mode or run mode. But then, it works when I test my webpage a few days later. I don't get it. Software either work or don't. Can't be both. This latest version of VS Express is buggy. Does anyone have this similar bug?

VWD 2008 Express. Windows 7 (64 bit). I want all my work and settings for VWD 2008 to be stored in the public (shared) documents folder. There are settings under Tools>Options to specify where projects and templates are stored, that is part of the answer. However, whenever I open VWD it always creates a "Visual Studio 2008" folder in my personal Documents folder where it apparently stores some settings. How can I make VWD work entirely in the "Visual Studio 2008" public folder for everything and NOT create the personal folder?

code behind - in a separate file. I've just upgraded from VS2005 to VS2008. #In an aspx file I have (for example)
[Code]....
However, in the code behind aspx.vb, when I type:Label1 then press '.'I don't get intellisense automatically pop up the members and methods. I've done the reset of the intellisense in Options > Text Editor but that didn't fix it.

I am using visual studio 2008 professional. I created a unit test project for my current website (project). This unit testing project is mainly testing code in App-Code folder. In order to be able to access classes from App_Class I need to add App_Code.dll reference to my unit testing project. Right now, I am doing like: publish website, which produce App_Code.dll. Then I added it to my unit testing project. This is very time consuming process: if I make any changes on under test class, I need to publish website to get App_Code.dll. It takes at lest 4 minutes to publish and get App-code.dll. If I have add the new App-code to my unit testing project, it takes about 1 to 2 minites. Is there an easier way toget App_Code.dll?
I have tried use Accessor that MS Test autogenerated, which deos not need App_Code.dll, however, I cannot get an object instantiated. So that is why I add App_Code.dll to my test project.

this is an extremely frustrating situation. We have just upgraded to Visual Studio 2010, and very nice it is, except for when it won't do something really simple, like Publish your ASP.NET Web Application to a folder on your desktop.For some unearthly reason, what used to work flawlessly in 2008 is now generating an error: It stops Publishing, after successfully Building, saying:Error: Copying file ImagesProfile32_32.JPG to objx64ReleasePackagePackageTmpImagesProlfile32_32.JPG failed. Could not find file 'ImagesCelebrityProfileImages32_32.JPG'.The problem is that there isn't any reference to that file in the project code (in the database, yes, but not in the code itself), and we don't want to store such images with the project (and they're not).Why (and how) has it suddenly decided that this unreferenced image (and presumably more if I get it to move past this one) is suddenly necessary to run the project? How can I stop this from happening?
