Visual Studio :: The App_Code Folder And Recycling Samples?
Feb 14, 2010
I am a developer who up until now only used WAP assemblies. Is that old and outdated nowadays? For example I have found a really great sample of google map API I'l like to use but my project is in VB.NET and the sample is using code in App_Code folder in C# so I cannot mix and integrate in a easy way. Do I have to convert the C# code into VB.Net to make it work or is there a shortcut when finding sample code in App_Code folder in the wrong code language?
at vs2008 i could set App_Code folder, but at vs2010 i can not do it, that's why i put my dataset's and class' to App_Data folder. Either I do not know even App_Data folder is secure?
I've searched but not found much that helps, could be using wrong search terms.Anyway, currently using Visual Studio 2005 and VB, but just got Visual Studio 2010 and trying to use C# and am having problems using classes, I think I'm missing something simple here.
In both 2005 & 2010 I create a new website and a Default.aspx, in 2005 using VB, C# in 2010.
Right-click the project -> Add New Item -> Class, and leave it as Class1.vb/Class1.cs
Both 2005 & 2010 prompt to place it in the App_Code folder, so choose yes.
Here are the class files, I've not changed anything apart from create a very simple function:
Class1.vb code: [Code]....
Class1.cs code: [Code]....
In my VB project Default.aspx.vb: [Code]....
No errors, and debugging shows that a = "hello"
My Default.aspx.cs: [Code]....
This gives an error:Error 1 The name 'tester' does not exist in the current context D:Visual Studio 2010WebSite11Default.aspx.cs
How do I reference the tester function within Class1 in my C# project?
My problem is that the intellisense is not enabled within the App_Code folder, so to twick this problem I initially create a separate folder where I develop my classes then I move them to the App_Code but, but I'm convinced that this is not the right practice so how to configure visual studio 2008 to enable intellisense at the App_Code folder
I am using visual studio 2008 professional. I created a unit test project for my current website (project). This unit testing project is mainly testing code in App-Code folder. In order to be able to access classes from App_Class I need to add App_Code.dll reference to my unit testing project. Right now, I am doing like: publish website, which produce App_Code.dll. Then I added it to my unit testing project. This is very time consuming process: if I make any changes on under test class, I need to publish website to get App_Code.dll. It takes at lest 4 minutes to publish and get App-code.dll. If I have add the new App-code to my unit testing project, it takes about 1 to 2 minites. Is there an easier way toget App_Code.dll?
I have tried use Accessor that MS Test autogenerated, which deos not need App_Code.dll, however, I cannot get an object instantiated. So that is why I add App_Code.dll to my test project.
I am fairly new to ASP.net and web page development. I normally create Windows Apps, but the move is on to web pages. I have read and tried a number of posts on this matter, but none of them resolved the problem I am having. I have created a web site (I'm positive it is a web site) and added a class. Visual Studio automatically created and added the class to the App_Code folder. Accordingly, I added the get/set methods to the class and made them public. When ever I try to access the class from a code behind for any page, I get the class name, but nothing more. Intellisense shows only Equals and EqualsReference - no variables. I'm used to using classes in windows forms application and this would make life so much easier if it worked like it is supposed to work.
Best way to describe my issue with vs 2010.create a new website. create the App_Code folder. create a new class in the folder. put the line "x" in the class declaration. hit compile. And the website will compile with no errors. It's not "seeing" this new class as being part of the project best I can tell.
I am using Visual Studio 2010 and have a full version of SQL Server 2008 (not SQL Server Express 2008). I would like to be able to use the database that I created in Sql Server 2008 (not sql server 2008 express) but when I go to app_code -> Add Item and select SQL Server I get the following error message:
"Connections to SQL Server database files (.mdf) requires Sql Server 2005 Express or Sql Server 2008 Express to be installed an running on the local computer ..."
Do I really need to have sql server 2008 express installed on my local computer when I already have the full blown version of Sql Server 2008 installed on my local computer.
I signed up with a new hosting company that uses Plesk. I use Visual Studio 2005 It appears that my rootfolder must be named httpdocs, which means every website I create would have the same name. If I do nothave my aspx files stored locally in an httpdocs folder, then I cannot synchronize with the server when I usethe copyweb dialog. Also Visual Studio 2005 creates a folder using the website name in the C:Documents and SettingsuserLocalSettingsApplication DataMicrosoftWebsiteCache for storing website settings, but cannot have multiple folders of same name, i.e., httpdocs, so this seems to be a conflict with Plesk. What can I do to resolve this?I talked with support at the hosting company, but they do not know Visual Studio at all. I am thinking I need to switch to
I've noticed that with some, but not all sites, if I add a class in a .cs file in the App_Code folder, then I can't reference the class anywhere. In some sites, this isn't a problem. If I move the .cs file to the root, then no problem. Anyone able to explain what's going on here? I have a mixture of sites created in VS2010, along with ones that existed before I got it. Don't know if this makes any difference. More to the point, how do I persuade VS2010 (and I suppose IIS ultimately) to allow .cs files in App_Code, as I find this much neater than having class files littered around the root.
I have a question. When I create my website using vwd 2008 express, I can not create App_Code folder, actually there's no selection for App_Code folder when I right click on my website(only Theme, App_Resources, App_LocalResources, App_GlobalResources and disabled App_Data).
I try to add new folder and name it App_Code, then put a class in there. But I can reference to it in my code behind.
Is there something wrong with my VWD installment or this is not supported by Express version?
I know you can add an existing item(s), but is there a way to add an Existing folder (and contents) to a project? It sucks without this option. I need to add a folder that has many folders and a lot of content.
After i delete some files from my system to save space on my hard disk ::i face the following problem each time i click on any project exe the application data folder for visual studio cannot be created how to fix this problem?
I have a few questions regarding the "special" ASP.NET folders in Visual Studio web projects.
Adding an App_Data folder in Visual Studio is present, but grayed out in my C# web project, why? What are the meanings of the various ASP.NET "special" folders?
App_GlobalResources App_LocalResources App_Data App_Browsers Themes - I know this is used to contain stylesheets for a particular theme and is then specified in the web.config or page (if I remember right). App_Code - Were these classes that were pre-compiled? Do these ASP.NET folders retain their special meaning if you manually create a folder with the same name instead using the "Add ASP.NET Folder" feature in Visual Studio?
How can I prevent Visual Studio from naming the classes for new pages that are in folders from being named with the folder name? Does this method not set "right" with anyone else?
The several different environments (e.g. live, demo etc) of my web app are differentiated by config settings in a folder called EnvironmentConfiguration. Whenever I update one of the sites, I delete the EnvironmentConfiguration folder from the precompiled site before copying the website files over (i.e. in order that the EnvironmentConfiguration folder in the deployment location is not replaced). Just to save mistakes, is there a way I can get Visual Studio not to produce the EnvironmentConfiguration folder when it precompiles the site for me?
I currenty have a project hosted on our server, when i open that project folder i see about half of the folders i should normally see, i dont see the Controllers folder, Properties folder, obj folder, as well as the csproj file. Before I could copy this same folder and put it on my laptop and after it brought all of them over it would show these folders. Now it wont, it just copies over what it sees, not the other folders...I'm trying to create a copy on my laptop that I can work on then publish it to the server...I was able to do this before just fine, now its not copying/generating the necessary folders/files to my comp
In my company app we have organized it something like the following:
1. Solution (Transcripts) Solution Folder - Lib Solution Folder - Debug Solution Folder - Release Class Library Project Web Project
My Question:
1. All my references from Web Project are referencing to the DLL's in the Lib folder under Solution (Transcripts). Why can't we refere to DLL's directly under Web Project why the need of creating a new solution folder "Lib"?
2. When we publish the Web Project. Does that mean that all the DLL's under Lib solution folder also gets published?
I was trying to create a Dynamic Data Website using VS 2010 RC. An attempt to create an App_Code folder where I would put a LINQ to SQL class, failed. When I selected 'Add ASP.NET Folder' to add the folder, I had options to create only the following folders:
Using vb.net/asp.net 2005. I have a project that is done with all vb.net, however I want to get some more experience with C#.Net. I am considering creating a new database class to put in the app_code folder.
I have an application which contains different modules from different databases, for instance, I have a table called "ITEMS" in each database. When I create the classes for the table ITEMS I wonder how I can differentiate among them.
For instance, for now, I have "ItemDetails.cs" under App_Code folder BUT I need to create another "ItemDetails.cs" class which will reference the table ITEMS from a different database. If I create folder under the App_code the class name still remains the same.
I could add an acronym in front the class to differentiate which database I am working from but that makes the class name too long.
I'm using Vs2010 professional. I was working with a large WebSite (folder) project at work using IIS7 and tried to attach the debugger to the w3wp.exe for debugging an aspx page in IE8 after setting breakpoints in the javascript for the page and in the Page_Load in the code behind. I got a "first chance exception of type 'System.InvalidOperationException' occurred in System.dll" in my debug output, so I gave up for the moment. I created a default website project in the root of IIs7, and set it up as an application in IIs7 with the default app pool.
I tried entering a little javascript in the head, and set a breakpoint, and set a breakpoint again in the Page_Load. I attached the debugger again to w3wp.exe. I see the assemblies load in the debug output and nothing happens:
