Visual Studio :: Trying To Setup A Site Where A User Can Create An Account, Log In And Have Access To Only Their "home Page"?
Nov 24, 2010
Newer to ASP (not VB). Running VS 2010 Ult. Basically I just need pointed in the right direction for what I am trying to accomplish. I am trying to setup a site where a user can create an account, log in and have access to only their "home page". On that home page I want them to be able to have access to their data and their data only. I have created the web site and the login, create user, change password, ect. pages using the built in controls, problem is that about the extent of my ASP'ing.
I would just like pointed in the right direction to be able to code this. Not asking for someone else to do it for me, I want to learn this on my own. I just need pointed somewhere to get me started with member pages and what not.PS - This is what I am looking to doCreate account -> Automatically create user folder and home page within -> Restrict access to only the new user and the admin

Using IIS 7.5, IIS_IUSRS is supposed to be the account to use. I get '401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials' error. If I add an EVERYONE account with Read, it works. But rather not have Everyone account. Any idea why IIS_IUSRS does not work? It has Read access. Anonymous Access=enabled. Specific User=IUSR As a side, on the Basic Settings... for the site, Test Settings button says 'ok-on Authenticate' but Authorization 'cannot verify access to path'.

Why is there no default 'create/open' access to 'WebSites' from the VS2010 start page?
Background:I've succesfully been developing ASP.NET web applications (via WebSite method ((((Not WebProjects)))), using VisualWebDeveloper) for roughly 3 years. Personally, I prefer the WebSite method or strategy due to the decrease in both size and complexity (the web applications I build are generally for around 50-100 simultaneous users logging in and out and constantly manipulating data). I will continue bulding my sites via the 'Website' method provided VS2010 doesn't begin it's deprecation.The root of this question (which boiled into this post) came from perusing this article and this video tutorial. It's a shame to see functionality that brings with it an overall ease of use and increase in production capacity by decreasing both size and complexity of web application development... downplayed.
If the Visual Studio 2010 Development Team left this functionality out for a reason, I would very much like to know. So that I know what is going to be "sponsored by Microsoft" in a couple of years and I don't waste another second considering using the 'WebSite method' as a viable solution (as I know that I can't stick with vs2008 while rest the development community gets to evolve with the innovations implemented within vs2010)... WebSite method or the WebProjects method.

I've tried all kinds of searches on this site and with Bing and don't seem to get any hits that meet my condition. So pardon me if this is a rather basic question. I'm rather new at ASP.NET programming.I want to experiment with putting up to a live site. GoDaddy gives you free hosting if you get the URL from them. The catch is the hosting only supports IIS 7.0 with .Net 2.0/3.0/3.5. I've uploaded all kinds of plain websites with no problem. So in Visual
Studio 2010 I selected the following options while creating a new project:
<customErrors mode="Off" />
<!--<compilation debug="true" targetFramework="4.0">-->
<compilation debug="true" >
<assemblies>
<add assembly="System.Web.Abstractions, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" />
<add assembly="System.Web.Routing, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" />
<add assembly="System.Web.Mvc, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" />
</assemblies>
</compilation>
I tried various solutions offered on the web for other issues like setting References "Copy Local = true" to upload various binaries.

I'm working with VS2010 and I wonder should I use one Solution for multiple web applications (web sites) or is it better to create separate web applications (with it's own solution) for each web site?

I am using the Visual Studio 2010 Express to create a web site.I created a database using SQL Express,but I decided to copy the mdf file to App_Data folder thinking I then might not need SQL Server running.I used the connection string that points to the database file in App_Data.
I deployed it to the server (Windows 2000 server with .Net 2.0 and SQL Server 2000) using Copy Web Site.I got the following error.An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.When connecting to SQL Server 2005,this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.(provider: SQL Network Interfaces,error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
My questions are
1. Do I still need SQL Server running even if I used a database in App_Data?
2. On the server SQL Server 2000 is running,why does the error say SQL Server 2005?
3. Are there anything that I have to consider beyond the version of Framework when deploying after development with VS 2010 (Framework 4.0)?

I'm not sure why this is happening. I have 3 client machines all using VS 2008 with team explorer. All three clients are my own and have the same login name, "Ryan". On two of the machines, the workspace owners say "Ryan" but the 3rd says "Administrator". On that one, I'm logged in as Ryan. I'd like it to be Ryan instead of Administrator but am not sure why this is happening. When I force it to use Ryan, it allows me to, but no longer appears on the list (but does show up as a workspace under the other 2 clients).

I've got Visual Stuido 2008 Team Suite + Team Foundation Server + TFS Power Tools running on a Windows XP laptop. Everything uses Windows Authentication.A few weeks ago I changed my Windows password per company security policy. As soon as that happened, I started getting a problem working within TFS. I would be trying to check in or check out a file, or view the history of a file, and I would get the following error: "You are not authorized to access tfs.servername.com". Whenever I get that error, my Windows account has become locked and I need to call the helpdesk to get unlocked.
This issue happens intermittantly...I could be working fine in Visual Studio for several hours and then it'll happen. Sometimes it happens several times in a row - I'll get the account unlocked, and then the next time I try to do something in Visual Studio it locks again.I realize there are a host of ways an account can become locked - believe me, I've run them all out - I don't have any services running on my machine that are tied to my WIndows account, I wasn't logged in to another computer under my old password, I don't have any mapped drives that use my old password. I'm fairly sure there's something in VS or TFS that is causing it - I can work for days without getting into Visual Studio and I don't get the issue. I use SQL Sever 2005 Express, which also uses Windows Auth, and I have no problems. The lockouts only start when I'm doing something in VS.

When I open up a web application project, VS attemps to configure IIS to open the project. This is fine, but typically there is already an application in that place. For example, we have apps that run at the root, and various feature branches would map to the same virtual application. Even though VS can *create* the application, it won't modify an existing one.
For example, lets say IIS has:
/MyApp
During my day I mightwant to work on MyApp from:
c:ranchesfeature1MyApp
c:ranchesfeature2MyApp
c:archive
elease102MyApp
c:production
elease204MyApp
If I delete /MyApp, then VS will create it when I open any of these projects, but it will never modify /MyApp to point to my current project. So first thing is: Is there any way to change this behavior?
Second question is, is there no way to open a web application project w/o having a properly backed IIS application setup? I know you can have the projects run off the casini webserver, but all of our applications target IIS and rely on inherited web.config settings. /MyApp is expecting to find config values that exist at /Web.Config and a login page for the entire system at /Login.aspx. Trying to run /MyApp in casini fails immediately because of these dependencies.
But what if I am just doing a code review. I don't care to browse the site, I just want to open the project. Is there no way to tell VS to just open the project and ignore the fact that IIS isn't setup right?

I'm trying to access an SQL Server Express database out of an ASP.NET HTTP request handler. The handler is run under ASPNET account and uses "integrated security" in the SQL connection string and so I get an error message saying that login for ASPNET account failed and so I can't access the database. This seems to be a very common problem and most answers say "grant access to you database to user ASPNET".
I only have Visual Studio 2008 and I can't find how to change access permisssions for a database. Specifically I use Tools->Server Explorer and I can see all the tables in the database but can't find how to change access permissions. How do I change access permissions to my database using tools shipped within Visual Studio 2008?

I've got webform routing setup on my asp.net webforms 3.5sp1 project. I would like to have the files for the site in a directory called content including the home page as I would like to run multiple sites using the same system. In MVC there is a blank default page and the home page is in a folder called home. I can't seem to replicate this behaviour using web form routing but would like to. The blank page is always hit first. the route handler is hit second - it recognises that the request is for the home page and sets up the routing page but is not used. the route handler code is simple:
public string VirtualPath { get; private set; }
public IHttpHandler GetHttpHandler(RequestContext
requestContext)
{
string file = requestContext.RouteData.GetRequiredString("File");
string id = requestContext.RouteData.GetRequiredString("Id");
string queryString = "?menuid=" + id;
VirtualPath = "~/" + file;
HttpContext.Current.RewritePath(
string.Concat(
VirtualPath,
queryString));
var page = BuildManager.CreateInstanceFromVirtualPath
(VirtualPath, typeof(Page)) as IHttpHandler;
return page;
}
Is there anyway I can do this?
Update
Here is my global.asax route code:
public static void RegisterRoutes(RouteCollection routes)
{
Domain.RepositoryFactory repo = new RepositoryFactory();
foreach (var x in repo.MenuRepository.GetAllEnabledGetMenus())
{
if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(x.Url))
{
//add default
System.Web.Routing.RouteTable.Routes.Add(
new Route("Default.aspx",
new RouteValueDictionary(new { File = x.FileName,
Id = x.Id.ToString() }),
new CoreRouteHandler()));
}
else
{
string url = x.Url;
if(x.Url.StartsWith("/"))
{
url = url.Remove(0, 1);
}
System.Web.Routing.RouteTable.Routes.Add(
new System.Web.Routing.Route(url,
new RouteValueDictionary(new {File = x.FileName,
Id = x.Id.ToString()}),
new CoreRouteHandler()));
}
}
}

In the Setup Project I have 2 web.config files: web.config - used during the development and web_dist.config - the one that should be included into Setup Project. I must be sure the the Setup project will NOT include the web.config and will always include web_dist.config.
In the File System -> Web Application Folder I have added the Content Files from the project.
Also included the web_dist.config and mapped it to the web.config.
But this gives the warning:
WARNING: Two or more objects have the same target location ('[targetdir]web.config') And the actual config file included is web.config and not web_dist.config. What would be the best option to include the web_dist.config (and named as web.config in the setup)?

I am using VS2010. When I am building a release for a WinForms Applicaiton, I can see some .xml files relevant to project in the bin elease folder. The .dll (third party component) has been referenced in the References folder of the project for eg. Rebex.Net.Ftp and in the properties window the Source Path is
C:Program FilesRebexFile Transfer Pack for .NET 4.0FTP SSL for .NET 4.0inRebex.Net.Ftp.dll In the above mentioned source path directory there is an Rebex.Net.Ftp.xml which gets pulled across to the release folder as well. I couldn't really get my head around where this can be referenced so that it puts this .xml file in the release folder of the project when I do a build?
My main problem is, when I created a setup project for this application, I can't get this file included in the installation pack (after installing the .msi file). I get the Rebex.Net.Ftp.dll but not Rebex.Net.Ftp.xml file. I tried all the options in the Project Output except including the "Source files" which I dont want to. how to include the .xml files in the setup installation pack, ie., if there are properties I am forgetting to set or something like that?
