WCF / ASMX :: Code Within A WebService And WCF Client Work Only When Fildder Is Capturing Requests?
Mar 31, 2011
I have a piece of code written in 2 different ways, one a web service and another a WCF client which are trying to access an external 3rd party URL.
The same code when written as an exe works fine, i see my submissions on the 3rd party site, while the web code does not work.
I installed Fiddler to check traffic and to my surprise the web code works when Fiddler is capturing traffic, As soon as I stop Fiddler my code does not work.
For the web service code I get error: The remote name could not be resolved:
For the WCF client I get error: There was no endpoint listening at <<3rd party URL>> that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action.
Am quite sure now that this is because of some network and/or proxy on my corporate network, but not able to figure out what it can be.

I added a new asmx file, which start like this:
[Code]....
I have uncommented the ScriptService line to allow access from scripts.
What else do I need to set to make jquery connections?
Can I prevent access from outside my app? I only want to provide a service for signed-in users (web forms) via own webpage.

I have such a problem. Suppose we have a client (WinForms app), which invokes some methods from webservice. Every 5 minutes (Interval of Timer) I invoke asynchronously webmethod A. Suppose that time of its execution take a 1 minute. When this operation runs, I open some Window, and invokes webmethod B synchronously... or i try to do it. Application suspended, wait until webmethod A ends, then process webmethod B (or I have an exception - Connection was closed, or Timeout...). Is there any possibility to run this A, B webmethods 'parallel'?

I want to build a webservice that has to get some data as parameter from the client application. the data from the client side are records from there database. my websercie has to send then these data to a soap server through 'HttpWebRequest'. Can i get the data as Datatable? and then send as stream to the soap server? Or maybe there is a better easier ways?

There is an external (Java based ) web service that i am calling. I've added my service reference and verified that Reference.cs has been generated.
Then i call my service form my client website like such:
[Code]....
But my response object is mostly null after it receives the response. The properties that should have values do NOT.
When i look at Trace viewer, the SOAP request is correct and the SOAP response is correct. I get back a valid soap response with all the data i need it's just not making its way back to my response object. I've tried regenerating the proxy many different ways (svcutil) with no luck.
Example of what is in the response object (good data which is not making it's way back to my response object):
<ogc:Spatial_Capabilities><ogc:GeometryOperands><ogc:GeometryOperand>gml:Envelope</ogc:GeometryOperand><ogc:GeometryOperand>gml:Point</ogc:GeometryOperand><ogc:GeometryOperand>gml:LineString</ogc:GeometryOperand><ogc:GeometryOperand>gml:Polygon</ogc:GeometryOperand></ogc:GeometryOperands><ogc:SpatialOperators><ogc:SpatialOperator name="BBOX"></ogc:SpatialOperator><ogc:SpatialOperator name="Overlaps"></ogc:SpatialOperator></ogc:SpatialOperators></ogc:Spatial_Capabilities>
Why isn't the SOAP response making its way back to my response object?

I am trying to consume a third party web service. In order to access any web method I need to pass session id with soap header in each request. I am trying to modify my header but haven't been successful. I am using proxy in 2.0. I created a separate class which inherits the soap header. I have copied my code but I am not sure how to go about this. How do I attach this header to proxy.

Most WCF web service I have developed were consumed in a server side code (by adding a service reference in visual studio or creating a proxy class using svcutil.exe. I have never consumed a web service in a client code. So I apologize if I am using wrong terminology or my question does not make sense. We have a browser add-on or plugin that connect to a device on client computer (think of it as active-x control for internet explorer) inside a asp.net web page. This browser plugin/add-on then will be sending measurement data to the web server. After some research it appears to me that I can do eithera) Develop an AJAX enabled WCF web service and use script manager and javascript to consume it inside the web page that interact with browser pluginb) Develop a WCF web servcice (not sure about AJAX enable) that serialize request and response to JSON, and use JQuery inside asp.net page to consume it.QuestionWhat's difference between approach a) and b)? Which is better in particular scenario I have described.

I have a web site where I need to capture the IP address of the logged in user. Earlier my code used to work fine. But all of a sudden it is giving me only one IP address from whichever machine may be the user logging in. I have tried almost all possibilites :
Request.ServerVariables("REMOTE_ADDR")
Request.ServerVariables("HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR")
Request.UserHostAddress()
Still it is giving me the same IP address.

I have an application that is using a traditional web reference (not WCF service reference). I'd like to capture the request and response SOAP envelopes being processed for my referenced service (under the hood). I know how to do this with custom behavior using WCF, but how do I do this using a traditional web reference?

The main issue is that I cannot run a webservice that accepts requests in JSON format. I keep getting a 500 Server error stating that the "request format is invalid." My ASP.NET AJAX extensions are installed. My server is running Plesk Control Panel 8.6 which is undoubtedly causing these problems.
The default handler for this specified extension is shown in the web.config like so:
For my applications webservice to handle JSON it needs to have this reference:
<add name="ScriptHandlerFactory" verb="*" path="*.asmx" preCondition="integratedMode" type="System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptHandlerFactory, System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"/>
Plesk is not allowing the request to be handled properly. I need to know the correct http directive(s) to put into the web.config to properly handle JSON webservices.

I have a text box in which I want only digits (either decimal or whole numbers). I have applied Required Field Validator and Regular Expression Validator on it.I have an Image Button, by clicking on which, I want this validation to be performed. But when I build the code, and clicks on Image Button, these validators do not work and I am redirected to the server side method of Image Button and after completing the execution of server side method, control comes to these validators and client side validation executes.I am fed up by finding solutions on Google and unable to find any solution. Please tell me of anyone of you know the solution that why server side code is running first and client side validation is executing after server side code execution.

On my asmx service I want to get the value of the dropdownlist to filter the next input which will be state/providence.
My code on the asmx:

I want to add another clause to the WHERE statement to restrict Country = @Country so I will need to get that value to the web service.

I am using a EntityDataModel. I have one table that has fields id, first, last
I have a stored procedure for inserting that is mapped to this table in the entydatamodel.
[Code]....
If I execute this in the Code Editor the Output window would look like this
[Code]....
Here is the sample code for a button click event on a simple page that only has a button. This is a bit of bad example because I am actually setting the field id. But assuming that it was an Identity field that was incrementing itself by 1....what would be the code after SaveChanges() that would capture the reutrn value from expId in the stored procedure.

I am calling a web service in my aspx page. the web service (written in java) is acting as a middleware between my system and another system (Siebel) to which I send services and get response for these services. some requests are synchronous. Sometimes when invoking a method the response takes a long time to respond, so a time out exception is thrown.
The problem is that the web service is receiving the same request many times despite I am calling it only once.In my log file and database entries it is clear that the request is called only once. but in the middleware and Siebel side they are receving four or five requests for the same request sent by me.
Is this a bug in asp.net. is it possible that the server where my application is deployed is sending the request many times when not getting the response.Note: iam using Visual studion 2005. the application is deployed to windows server 2003.Iam not discussing the problem of time out. iam asking about the duplicate issue.

I use asp.net (webforms flavour) for the server coding. Let's say that I stored a variable called "test" inside the Session object. Is there a way to grab its content inside the javascript js file (I use Jquery). Currently, I use the following workaround - in my aspx.cs file I populate a hidden field, then in Jquery I grab the contents of that field. What is the proper way to do that?I tried to expose the session through a web method and using $ajax function to get the value on the Jquery side, but I am getting security error - "permission denied" - no additional explanation offered. My workaround works fine, but to me it seems rather clunky. What are the common ways to achieve session access in Jquery?

A customer wants us to create an ajax-enabled web application that can be used to manage their IT environment (Active directory, mail, file security, ...). However, as the team that will support the web application does not know anything about these IT systems, they would like to split the coding so that all interfacing with the IT environment is done via PowerShell, which is known by the administrators of these systems. This would mean that if new functionality is required, the web team can just create an additional web page and interface and use PowerShell scripts that get created by technically skilled people in that specific topic (ie mail administrators). I don't see an issue using this approach for requests like adding a user where latency is not an issue, but I do wonder if this is feasible for interactive content with Ajax.
Ie I would like to implement a google suggest like search for AD users. This would mean that ie for every x keystrokes (or x seconds whatever approach I implement) an Ajax request will be made and the web application or web service will than use PowerShell to get the data. Taken into account that up to about 75 users can use this feature, is this something that would work? Not only performace-wise but also the number of connections (I read about the Powershell 5 remote session limit but also that it could be put to a higher number)? The example above is probably the most resource heavy Ajax requests (and can be optimized by caching), so taken into account they don't want this nice feature, are basic PowerShell scripts in ajax request really an option. My gut feeling is telling me this is a no-go, but I don't want to exclude the option just because it's not something I usually would do.

If a user makes a second request to the same Web Service method while the first request is already running, is there a way to simply stop the execution of the first request and discard it immediately?
Usually what happens is users get impatient and click on a button 10 times when there's a performance blip in the system, which only makes things worse since the system now has to process 10 queued requests (the first 9 of which are now irrelevant) before any results are returned.

am new to web services and have a quick question. I've some data (an c# class object) that needs to be shared between two different users (of my web service) . all the methods in the web service have a parameter called "sessionkey" which can be used to know what data to share.
i need to know how/where to store this data ?

I've got a WCF web service that runs fine at the moment but there is talk about using it very heavily soon. As part of it's normal process it writes a file out, then reads it back in again (don't ask why, I know it's stupid). I'm concerned that if we start hitting it with lots of requests then the following might happen.
1. Request 1 writes the file out.
2. Request 2 comes in and overwrites the file.
3. Request 1 reads the file back in but this is now the wrong file.
My understanding is that the requests would naturally queue up so that request 2 wouldn't start until request 1 had finished, but I'm not totally sure.

I have a RESTful webservice. This webservice builds some information (which can take upwards of a couple seconds) and caches the contents.
This works well; however, suppose that many of the same requests come in at about the same time. In our current scenario, each request will build the content before caching. This is obviously not desired as it uses CPU time that could be better served elsewhere. What I would like to do is to suspend/block requests to the same url/cachekey until the content has been built and cached, at which time those other requests will be unblocked and simply fetch the content from cache.
I am not sure the best way. The following are options I have thought about:
Use string.Intern on that cache key and lock. Problem is that this could cause a deadlock if that string is used elsewhere. Use a ConcurrentDictionary and WaitHandle objects to allow other request to lookup in the dictionary if a request is being processed and then "wait" for the request to finish. This would at least give me a timeout capability but I am concerned with the performance of creating many wait handles.
