C# - Start The Bat-file At Web Server Side?

Mar 30, 2011

I need to call a console application to load data into another desktop application on the remote server that located within the corporate domain.

Users will enter the web page and upload data to asp.net web server, which after transformation should call that console application. Users are located remotely and do not have any other access except the web server.

I decided to lower the security web application context and let the asp.net working process to start the console application on the current IIS 6.0 web server

What I have done:

I changed the security account for the application pool for Local System;

I added ASPNET Account and IIS_WPG IIS Process Account to Administrators group;

I added "Allow service to interact with desctop" for "IIS Admin Service" and "World Wide Web Publishing Service" processes and restarted the machine;

I tried to start BAT-file at server side through the test page code-behind, but failed:

[code]...

The error was "access denied".

Button That Performs A Server-side Action And Returns A File To Download?

Jul 28, 2010

I have an ASP.NET page (using ASP.NET AJAX and the Telerik RAD components) that provides a data table and an option to download data in CSV format.I have a requirement that a single button allow the user to download a data set. I have a system set up that's nearly working for me based off the solution in
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/104601/asp-net-response-redirect-to-new-window

<asp:Button ID="ExportCsvButton" runat="server" Text="Download to CSV/Excel"
byte[] csvBytes = someLongOperation();
Session[EXPORTED_SESSION_KEY] = csvBytes;
Response.Redirect("myexportpage.aspx", true);
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Response.Clear();
Response.ClearHeaders();
Response.ClearContent();
Response.AppendHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=" + "file.csv");
Response.ContentType = "text/csv";
Response.AddHeader("Pragma", "public");
Response.BinaryWrite(Session[OtherPage.EXPORTED_SESSION_KEY] as byte[]);
Response.Flush();
Response.End();
}

This actually works quite well. When I click the 'Export to CSV' button, the page's UpdateProgress kicks in and my loading overlay appears (it's a CSS div that covers the window when visible). This can take some time depending on the data set (potentially several minutes), at which point I'm getting a window popup with my file.

C# - Start A File Download After A Postback?

Feb 7, 2011

In my application I am building a zip file for the User to download for some exported database information. The zip file is created when the user clicks a "generate data" button and I log the request in the database.

On my page, I have a Gridview which shows the download history of the User and also offers them the ability to download the latest generated file for a set period of time.

The issue I'm having is when they click the button, I'd like the page to refresh (thus refreshing the gridview and showing their latest request) and then start the file download for them (IE, bring up the prompt and let them decide whether to open/save/cancel it).

I'm able to start the download on a post back, but my Gridview is not updating before it begins so it doesn't show the newest request in the list. How can I get the gridview to update BEFORE the download prompt starts?

I'm using the following to start the download:

public void BeginDownload()
{
FileDownload download = InventoryService.GetLastThreeFileDownloads(this.EmployeeId).First();
FileInfo fi = new FileInfo(Server.MapPath(SERVER_DOWNLOAD_PATH) + download.DownloadFileName);
Response.Clear();
Response.ContentType = "application/zip";
Response.AppendHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=" + fi.Name);
Response.TransmitFile(fi.FullName);
Response.Flush();
}

The method is called in the Page_Load event as the last item, if a hidden field is set to true (which I set when they click the button to build the file).

I've also tried doing this through jQuery / AJAX calls to either refresh the page and start the download with little success. I have thought about opening a modal dialog and letting them click a link to start the download and then refresh the page when the modal closes, but that's a last resort if I can't find another solution.

Web Forms :: How To Manually Deploy An Aspx File To The DEV Server - It Has An Associated C# Code Behind File

Mar 14, 2011

I am working solo on an Asp.net/C# project created by someone in the past. I created two new web forms, and then built the prjocect and did the deploy using a TFS team build project. For some strange reason, my Aspx file is not getting copied to the destination DEV server. It does get copied to a temp folder on that server, but in the end, the team build is failing and not copying over the new Aspx file.

So until I figure out how to fix the team build script, is their a way to just copy the Aspx file out to the desired server location? That as well as copying out a dll which is associated with the build file?

Web Forms :: Controlling File Name Of The File Opened Directly From File Download Dialog?

Jul 26, 2010

I am downloading file from database using the following code. This code downloads an excel file from the database which has a macro attached to it when it is opened. This macro reads file name of the excel file and uses it for its computation. Everthing works file if user saves the file on his harddisk and then open if but if he directly opens the file from the dialog(by hitting 'Open' button) then file name of the opened excel file comes out be the name of the webform that has the above code and this leads to error in the macro. Is there any option through which i can control the name of the file if user directly opens the file from dialog or the option to disable or remove 'Open' button form the dialog?

Start Batch Job From IIS / Start Exe File With System.Diagnostics.Process.Start With Another Account Is Disabled?

Oct 28, 2010

What is the right approach when users (authenticated domain admins) should be able to start batch jobs (usually exe files) from an IIS (7.x) aspx (c#) page? This is an intranet site. The batch jobs have to run on the web server as Domain Admins. The website pool is executed by network service or some similar restricted account in AD.

Approaches I can think of (and their disadvantages):
1. Start exe file with System.Diagnostics.Process.Start with another account. This feature is disabled in IIS 7.x, how do I allow it?

2. Create a sheduled task and call scheduled task-api. This unmanaged dll is giving VS compiler warnings because it's unsafe to call from managed code.

3. I suppose there's a better approach, because the previous suggestions doesn't appear safe or robust.

Ashx Vs Aspx For File Download

Dec 15, 2010

In a basic scenario where I have a GridView with files to download and link buttons to download them, is there any benefit at all for creating a custom http handler for streaming those files as opposed to simply streaming from the event handler of the download link button?

Edit: As some suggested code reuse would favor the handler, however it's not an issue in this particular case. The handler is also faster being that it avoids the page life cycle, however this slight performance improvement is probably not worth creating a handler for in my particular situation. The only thing that comes to mind now is (assuming using the same aspx page approach) whether there is any special consideration in a situation where the GridView is inside an UpdatePanel?
