C# - Start A File Download After A Postback?
Feb 7, 2011
In my application I am building a zip file for the User to download for some exported database information. The zip file is created when the user clicks a "generate data" button and I log the request in the database.
On my page, I have a Gridview which shows the download history of the User and also offers them the ability to download the latest generated file for a set period of time.
The issue I'm having is when they click the button, I'd like the page to refresh (thus refreshing the gridview and showing their latest request) and then start the file download for them (IE, bring up the prompt and let them decide whether to open/save/cancel it).
I'm able to start the download on a post back, but my Gridview is not updating before it begins so it doesn't show the newest request in the list. How can I get the gridview to update BEFORE the download prompt starts?
I'm using the following to start the download:
public void BeginDownload()
{
FileDownload download = InventoryService.GetLastThreeFileDownloads(this.EmployeeId).First();
FileInfo fi = new FileInfo(Server.MapPath(SERVER_DOWNLOAD_PATH) + download.DownloadFileName);
Response.Clear();
Response.ContentType = "application/zip";
Response.AppendHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=" + fi.Name);
Response.TransmitFile(fi.FullName);
Response.Flush();
}
The method is called in the Page_Load event as the last item, if a hidden field is set to true (which I set when they click the button to build the file).
I've also tried doing this through jQuery / AJAX calls to either refresh the page and start the download with little success. I have thought about opening a modal dialog and letting them click a link to start the download and then refresh the page when the modal closes, but that's a last resort if I can't find another solution.

This below code i have used in my aspx page for file download.
Response.AppendHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename="" + emailAttachment.FileName + "";");
Response.ContentType = "application/octet-stream";
Response.OutputStream.Write(emailAttachment.Data, 0, emailAttachment.Data.Length);
Response.End();
This block of code display Download file Dialog for Open or Save the attached file.It's working fine in Mozila Firefox and IE8 but doesn't display Download file Dialog box in IE 7

What is the right approach when users (authenticated domain admins) should be able to start batch jobs (usually exe files) from an IIS (7.x) aspx (c#) page? This is an intranet site. The batch jobs have to run on the web server as Domain Admins. The website pool is executed by network service or some similar restricted account in AD.
Approaches I can think of (and their disadvantages):
1. Start exe file with System.Diagnostics.Process.Start with another account. This feature is disabled in IIS 7.x, how do I allow it?
2. Create a sheduled task and call scheduled task-api. This unmanaged dll is giving VS compiler warnings because it's unsafe to call from managed code.
3. I suppose there's a better approach, because the previous suggestions doesn't appear safe or robust.

The user click on a LinkButton, and the page does a PostBack. But I also need to prompt a file download to the user at the same time.
In order to do that, I did this on the LinkButton
lnkPrint.Attributes.Add("onclick", "window.open('Download.ashx?type=x')");
The Download.ashx Http Handler generates the file (Content-Type : application/pdf), and if I click on my LinkButton, it does PostBack and download the file after showing a popup... But I can't manage to close this popup automatically.
I tried some methods
settimeout('self.close()',1000) after the download Setting a RegisterStartupScript on the LinkButton.Command, to trigger the download after the postback, but IE6 prompts a warning that disturbs my users
So, none of these methods seems to work fine.
So, my question is : Is there a way to make the popup instantly disappear, or is there a means to make the page download the file AND postback at the same time ?
PS : I thought of the Your download will begin shortly method, but I'm afraid I'll have the same issues as before with the RegisterStartupScript...

I'm about to submit my pad file to multiple sharware sites but the pad file has to have a direct link to the download file and can't link to a download page which is what I would like to do, so I can track the traffic and get the downloader's email before allowing the download. I am running an ASP.NET site in VB. Is there a way to tell the web app to redirect to a specific aspx page when it receives a request for a specific file?

I am downloading file from database using the following code. This code downloads an excel file from the database which has a macro attached to it when it is opened. This macro reads file name of the excel file and uses it for its computation. Everthing works file if user saves the file on his harddisk and then open if but if he directly opens the file from the dialog(by hitting 'Open' button) then file name of the opened excel file comes out be the name of the webform that has the above code and this leads to error in the macro. Is there any option through which i can control the name of the file if user directly opens the file from dialog or the option to disable or remove 'Open' button form the dialog?

In our application, we allow user to upload documents which can be PDF, Doc, XLS, TXT. Uploaded documents will be saved on web server. We need to display link for each document user uploaded and when user click on that link, it should open relevant document. it is expected to have required software to open relevant documents.
To upload document, we use saveAs method of FileUpload control and it works absolutely fine.Now, how to view it?I believe, i need to copy/download file to local user machine and need to open it using Process.Start.For that i need to find user local temp directory. if i put path.GetTempPath(), it gives me web server directory and copy file there.
File.Copy(
sPath + dataReader["url"].ToString(),
Path.GetTempPath() + dataReader["url"].ToString(),
true);

I have made an application where I am displaying the .pdf , .doc , .docx files. These files are uploading from an Admin Panel.When user place a mouse pointer on download icon provided in front of every file, it shows the complete path where it’s get saved.I want to avoid this path visibility even when user place mouse on download icon and even if it Inspect an element (as most modern browser will have this functionality).

I have a folder called GUI. Inside GUI thers another folder called PDF and inside this folder, there are some PDF files. This folder (GUI) is uploaded to the server too. Then I have a WebForm with some ImageButtons. When I click one of these ImageButtons, I want the file to open in a new tab. I tried with the following code:
[Code]....
As you can see, I build the path using the tooltips of the different ImageButtons. The ToolTip = File Name I want to open. When I try this in debug mode, it works. It opens the pdf file in a new tab. However when I publish my website and upload it to the server... it doesn't work... when I click an ImageButton I get the following exception: No application is associated with the specified file for this operation
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. I have a simple 'file download' generic handler which sets the response contenttype and headers before sending the file through the same response.
I also have Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.server) set in the global.asax.
As I have noticed from various sources, Internet Explorer doesn't like this no-cache setting and gives an error when trying to download the file (requested site unavailable or cannot be found).
I thought maybe I could override this setting in the .ashx page, so I alter the response's cacheability setting to public. This did not solve the issue. removing the line from global.asax does solve the problem but obviously affects the whole site.
Is there a way of setting the cachability just for my generic handler?

In an ASP.NET WebForms 2.0 site we are encountering an intermittent bug in IE6 whereby a file download attempt results in the contents of the being shown directly in the browser as text, rather than the file save dialog being displayed. Our application allows the user to download both PDF and CSV files. The code we're using is:
HttpResponse response = HttpContext.Current.Response;
response.Clear();
response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment;filename="theFilename.pdf"");
response.ContentType = "application/pdf";
response.BinaryWrite(MethodThatReturnsFileContents());
response.End();
This is called from the code-behind click event handler of a button server control. Where are we going wrong with this approach? Edit Following James' answer to this posting, the code I'm using now looks like this:
HttpResponse response = HttpContext.Current.Response;
response.ClearHeaders();
// Setting cache to NoCache was recommended, but doing so results in a security
// warning in IE6
//response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.NoCache);
response.AppendHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename="theFilename.pdf"");
response.ContentType = "application/pdf";
response.BinaryWrite(MethodThatReturnsFileContents());
response.Flush();
response.End();
However, I don't believe that any of the changes made will fix the issue.

I need to call a console application to load data into another desktop application on the remote server that located within the corporate domain.
Users will enter the web page and upload data to asp.net web server, which after transformation should call that console application. Users are located remotely and do not have any other access except the web server.
I decided to lower the security web application context and let the asp.net working process to start the console application on the current IIS 6.0 web server
What I have done:
I changed the security account for the application pool for Local System;
I added ASPNET Account and IIS_WPG IIS Process Account to Administrators group;
I added "Allow service to interact with desctop" for "IIS Admin Service" and "World Wide Web Publishing Service" processes and restarted the machine;
I tried to start BAT-file at server side through the test page code-behind, but failed:
[code]...
The error was "access denied".
