Web Forms :: Dropdown List - Default Value And OnSelectedIndexChanged Doesn't Fire

I have a dropdown list that is populated by a dataset (Data being extracted from DB). Based on the selection made by the user I call OnSelectedIndexChanged, and populated the form with the relevent info. The problem I am having is the first item in the list is selected by default, so if the user selects this option OnSelectedIndexChanged does not fire. To work around this I add a default item to the dropdown list after populating it with the dataset as shown here;

jobStandardActList.SelectedIndex = 0;
jobStandardActList.SelectedValue =
"----Select an Item----");"";
This works fine, however if the user selects an item from the list, and then proceeds to selects the default item "----Select Item----" i receive an error. sys.webforms.pagerequestmanagersevererrorexception: an unknown error occured while processing the request on the server. The status code returned from the server was: 500

I have an application where I have a dropdownlist with AppendDataBoundItems set to true. This allows me to add a select all ListItem with a value of "-1". I store the selected value in a session so that the selected value is retained if a user navigates away from the page then returns. This works fine for all values except for when the value is set to the appenddatabound item (All). When I debug i can see that the onselectindexchanged event does not fire when the 'All' item is selected. If a user navigates away from the page and comes back this 'All' value is lost as it is not stored in the session.

I just wanted to clarify if selectedIndexChanged works on ajax cascading dropdowns as mine doesn't fire. Its in a user control inside an accordion pane. I've read conflicting things about this. All I want to do is check that the last of the 3 cascading dropdowns has been populated an enable a button if so.... but the event never fires when i make a selection on the last dropdown. If it isn't suppose to fire is there a way to raise an event when the selection is made and unmade (as when you change one of the other dropdowns the value resets and the buttton needs to be disabled.

I want to have a default value/item of "---Select One---" and then list all of the values from the SQL statement. Currently I am having trouble doing this. I tried to add it to the List Item but it doesn't show on the page.

I have an asp.net page with a list box on it. Multiple event handlers subscribe to its OnSelectedIndexChanged event.
When I change the SelectedIndex programmatically none of the events get fired.
Now a hack for this is to call each event handler, but this has already caused bugs since people didn't know they had to do this when adding a new event handler.
I can do this in a Winforms app and even when SelectedIndex is changed in code the events fire.

how i can set the default selected value for a dropdown list. My actual code is:

the GetAvatars() function return a List<MyObject> that contains the avatars informations such as filename and file url. I don't know if i this is correct, anyway i want to display a selectbox that shows the list of the avatars in a folder with a predefinited avatar selected and i would like to show an image near the selectbox with the current selected avatar. How can i do it? I don't find any way to set the default value

I wish to pass values of the selected items into a database and however noticed that the selected item is not what is sent into the database you can see in the snap shot below. during run time the following value is recorded. I am stuck at this point "Displaying a dropdown list of Categories with a --None -- Option. I want the gridview control to display 2 dropdown list one in read-only mode and the other in edit mode. When a record is in read-only mode, the dropdownlist's enabled property will be set to false."When it's on a read-only mode, it doesn't display the selected Category. it shows but the "No Category". I have 2 drop down lists.I have a very simple dropdown list #1 that diplays a title and holds an id value which is a GUID.I know it is getting this value and sending this value as I tested sending it to a label.I have the dropdown list #1 to autopostback to dropdown list #2 that "Is supposed to get" another title and value based on the GUID value of the first dropdown list. for some reason it wont return anything. I have done 100's of these but never based off a guid value.I assume the value needs to be converted to guid before selecting it in the second dropdown list.How can I do this? or is there something I am missing?

i have a dropdown with month names if the user has data for the month tht is selected then gridview displays the rows with day nos as per the month but if the gridview has no data for the same the dropdown or gridview via some event should call a insert procedure to insert data into the table for tht month with daynos ad rebind the gridview witht the rows just created

im using an update panel and my web form consists of textboxs and combo box, my problem is that when i click the button save for the first time, my page simply postbacks and the event save wouldnt fire, click it the second time and poof save will execute.. I notice that it is caused by my dropdown box and textbox autopostback function, i need to set this to true since i need to execute another function that will disable the dropdown when the textbox is filled and vice versa,set this to false and save will function normally..any ideas how to fix this?
