I am trying to populate menu from database in asp.net 3.5 but as i am new to this technology i really don't know what is the exact way. I tried to find out on web but i found nothing useful for me.
I am developing site for bookstore.First i want to populate departments and then in department, their categories as subitem.
I have both the tables in database.
I tried following code but it is giving me an erroe on relation code line
This constraint cannot be enabled as not all values have corresponding parent values.
All departments dont have categories.
code :
DataSet DepartmentData = new DataSet();
DataTable Department = CatalogAccess.GetDepartments();
DataTable Categories = CatalogAccess.GetCategories();
DepartmentData.Tables.Add(Department);
DepartmentData.Tables.Add(Categories);
DepartmentData.Relations.Add("Children", DepartmentData.Tables[0].Columns["DepartmentId"], DepartmentData.Tables[1].Columns["CategoryId"]);
foreach (DataRow item in DepartmentData.Tables["Department"].Rows)
{
MenuItem DepartmentItem = new MenuItem((string)item["Name"]);
DepartmentItem.ChildItems.Add(DepartmentItem);
foreach (DataRow childItem in item.GetChildRows("Children"))
{
MenuItem childrenItem = new MenuItem((string)childItem["Name"]);
DepartmentItem.ChildItems.Add(childrenItem);
}
}
Departments.DataBind();
and how to add navigation url too!
I can use any other logic but i want to know the better way to code this from expert.

i have the below code i want to put in a global method set as static so that i can build a couple tree views on my asp.net web app. now i have each building its own tree view using the code below. i was thinking to make a global static method to generate the node structure such as this and then just assign them to the tree view in my pages... or something like this. i dotn care about the details of the actual solution as long as i can have a single method to call like "buildTree()" that will be able to be used to bind the tree view controls to.toughs?
DataTable dtProjects = new DataTable();
DataTable dtRelease = new DataTable();
using (SqlConnection con = Global.GetConnection())

I have a SQL table used by a third party application that I have very little control over. The table contains a list of assemblies and their corresponding serial numbers. The tables primary key is a composite of the assembly number and serial number. There is no field I can use, reliably as an index.
I have an application I'm working on that pulls all the serial numbers from that table based on the assembly in a SQL View. I've then written code that pulls the serial numbers from that view based on the part number in a textbox on the form. That functionality works fine but I had both my datatextfield and datavaluefield set to the serial number. I've created another empty listbox that I would like to populate from a serial number or serial numbers being selected in the first. That is not working, I believe, because there is no index for the list.
My question is...How can I add an index value to each serial number as they populate from the SQL table. I've included the code below that I have pulling the serial number values.
This is an ASP.net VB webform.
Code:
Private Sub FillSnAvailList()
Dim strconnect1 As String = ("Data Source=MyDataSource")
Dim con1 As New SqlConnection(strconnect1)
con1.Open()
Dim cmd1 As New SqlCommand("SELECT [sPartNum], [SerialNum] FROM [V_MaxSerialNum] WHERE ([sPartNum] = @sPartNum)", con1)
[Code] ....

I am using SQL2008 and created a full-text index on 1 of my tables. Going through the wizard, I was offered (2) types of population schedules as follows:New Table Schedule: Define a population schedule for a table.New Catalog Schedule: Define a population schedule for a full-text catalog.I am familiar with a 'Catalog' schedule for population which I do nightly and was similar to configuration on SQL2000 for a full text index. However, what is the difference for a 'Table' schedule vs the 'Catalog' population schedule? I have the definitions above, but if someone with knowledge could offer a better in depth explanation in comparison, and if I should use both or not (I have just a Catalog population scheduled currently),

We have a data driven ASP.NET website which has been written using the standard pattern for data caching (adapted here from MSDN):
public DataTable GetData()
{
string key = "DataTable";
object item = Cache[key] as DataTable;
[code]...
The trouble with this is that the call to GetDataFromSQL() is expensive and the use of the site is fairly high. So every five minutes, when the cache drops, the site becomes very 'sticky' while a lot of requests are waiting for the new data to be retrieved.
What we really want to happen is for the old data to remain current while new data is periodically reloaded in the background. (The fact that someone might therefore see data that is six minutes old isn't a big issue - the data isn't that time sensitive). This is something that I can write myself, but it would be useful to know if any alternative caching engines (I know names like Velocity, memcache) support this kind of scenario. Or am I missing some obvious trick with the standard ASP.NET data cache?

I've coded a GridView in the markup in a page. I have coded a DataTable in the code-behind that takes data from a collection of custom objects. I then bind that DataTable to the GridView. (Specific problem mentioned a couple code-snippets below.)
GridView Markup:
<asp:GridView ID="gvCart" runat="server" CssClass="pList" AutoGenerateColumns="false" DataKeyNames="ProductID">
<Columns>
[code]....
Goal: I'm basically trying to find a way to update the data in my GridView (and more importantly my cart Session object) without having to do everything else I've seen online such as utilizing OnRowUpdate, etc. Could someone please tell me why gvCart.Rows is empty and/or how I could accomplish my goal without utilizing OnRowUpdate, etc.? When I execute this code, the GridView gets populated but for some reason I can't access any of its rows in the code-behind.

I am a complete newcomer to ASP.NET. However in the few weeks I have been playing with it I have got pretty far and have mastered things like stored procedures, gridviews, formviews and templates.I have a dropdown box which is populated from SQLDataSource1
I have a second dropdown box which is populated from SQLDataSource2, but i need the query feeding this to be dependent on what was selected in the first dropdown box. I assumed it would simply be a case of modifying the select statement on SQLDataSource2 using the SelectedIndexChanged event on the first DropDownList to update the second SQL source, but I cannot work out for the life of me how to do it. Pretty much all of the code I have is ASP.
can i do this purely in ASP rather than using VB behind the scenes or do I need to use VB? I am pretty comfortable with vb.net but one of the other issues I have is referencing an ASP object from VB... so for instance if I had a text box in ASP, how can I read or change the properties of this object from VB?
FYI I am using Visual Studio 2010 and SQL/Server

I'm having a problem with using a dropdown to filter the contents of another drop down. The basic idea is:
Dropdown 1 = CountryList (Column1)
Dropdown 2 = StateList (Column2)
I read the contents of a CSV file and populate the gridview. The user then visually verifies that the data is valid and proceeds to upload to the database. To do some testing, i have intentionally changed spellings of country names so they DO NOT match the countrylist which the grid view then flags with a different background indicating bad data. The user then edits the gridview. The Country and state columns then show a drop down control populated with the country list and filtered states list based on countryID.
Here's the ASP.NET ASPX Source for the section of code that is dealing with the gridview
[Code]....
Here's the section of VB Code behind that deals with handling the "RowEditing", specifically the binding of the dropdowns
[Code]....
The proglem is that these dropdowns are ment to easily fix minor errors in data. When i intentionally changed the spelling of "Canada" to Canadaa", this has no corresponding CountryID in the table and the ddlEdtStateID Dropdown's datasource filter does not work. I tried setting the datasource to nothing if a valid CountryID was not there and then i tried to use the SelectedIndexChanged event for the ddlEditCountryID to programmatically set the datasourceID for ddlEditStateID but when i try using CType(FindControl("ddlEdtStateID"), DropDownList) to set the DataSourceID, it does not find the control.
If the Country does not exist, then i just want the stateslist dropdown to say "select a country" but when a valid country is selected, it should display the filtered list for that countryID. Right now, if bad data is entered for the country, then the program crashes when it tries to populate the state drop down. I want it to just say, select a country when the countryID is not valid.

I have dropdown1 that has some items in it.I also have dropdown2 that gets populated from a database based on whatever is selected from dropdown1.Dropdown2 has its first item as "Make Selection" and then appends the data from the db based on what was selected in dropdown1.
Now when I select an item from dropdown1 it puts the correct data in dropdown2 but as soon as I select another item from dropdown1 it appends those values into dropdown2. How can I remove the values from dropdown2 after a new item is selected from dropdown1?
