Web Forms :: External Web.config And RoleManager

Oct 5, 2010

I am using an external config file (with MS Enterprise library):

[Code]....

In Global.Config I have a database settings:

[Code]....

But when I am trying to set a roleManager in web.Config:

[Code]....

it writes that can not find MainSqlServer connection string. I am understand why, so the question is - how to make this connection string (from external config file) visible to web.config.

Unable To Read Config Settings From External Config Files

Sep 1, 2010

We are experiencing some strange behaviour on one of our ASP.NET web servers (Windows 2003 64-bit). After some activity, two third-party controls are unable to run correctly. One is log4net (it does not write error messages out) and the other is a menu control (it displays eval message instead of picking up its license). The one common thread is that both controls pick up their config from external config files (linked to from web.config).

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this or experienced this in any way. Is it related to file/folder rights? The server has been running fine for a while and just started exhibiting this behaviour. Perhaps it occurs around the time the worker processes are recycled.

Can A Web.config Read From An External Xml File

Mar 9, 2010

I have to duplicate some settings (like connection string) between a web.config file that a WCF host uses and a web.config file that a web client uses.

In the interest of not duplicating, can I have both the web.configs read from a separate xml file? The two web.configs can be entirely in different solutions/projects so I guess this is not possible, but wanted to get other's opinion.

PS: I do understand I can use a database to store all the config settings.

C# - Is It Possible To Have Location Authorization Nodes In A Web.config Be External

Sep 20, 2010

Is it possible to have location authorization nodes in a web.config be external?

Such that I could take all of the nodes simlar to

[code]....

And move them outside of the web.config or something simlar? I find these nodes at an extreme amount of noise to a web.config when they're relatively static. Normally my approach would be to config source something like this but since it falls under the root node I'm not sure of it's possible with these nodes.

C# - Programmatically Edit External Config Files At Runtime?

Mar 1, 2011

By external config files, I mean .config files other than web.config. I've seen all the examples on how to edit web.config at runtime, but I want to edit a config file referenced by a configSource for appSettings. I want to modify only the external file and I will handle the app recycle.

I would like to use a built-in class to deal with the edits, but if the only option is a manual File open/parse, etc, then sobeit.

The general behind all this being a Settings page that is viewed at app startup, user sets their particulars and then saves the changes, then the real app starts up. quick and easy install app/configure page, so I'd like to leverage .config if at all possible.

FOLLOWUP - Quick Snippet to use XmlDocument to change an appSetting key value:

string path = Server.MapPath("~/my.config");
XmlDocument doc = new XmlDocument();
doc.Load(path);
XmlNode node = doc.SelectSingleNode("/appSettings/add[@key='myKey']");
node.Attributes[1].Value = "myVal";
XmlTextWriter writer = new XmlTextWriter(path, null);
writer.Formatting = Formatting.Indented;
doc.WriteTo(writer);
writer.Flush();
writer.Close();

Security :: Using Multiple RoleManager Providers With Different Connectionstrings

Oct 13, 2010

I have two connection strings being used:

<add
name="db1"
connectionString="Server=localhost;user
id=root;password=;persist security info=True;Database=db1"
providerName="MySql.Data.MySqlClient"/>
<add
name="db2"
connectionString="Server=localhost;user
id=root;password=;persist security info=True;Database=db2"
providerName="MySql.Data.MySqlClient"/>

I would like to have two different Role Providers using these connection strings:

<roleManager
enabled="true"
defaultProvider="rp1"
cacheRolesInCookie="true"
createPersistentCookie="false"
cookieProtection="All">
<providers>
<clear/>
<add
name="rp1"
type="MySql.Web.Security.MySQLRoleProvider,
MySql.Web, Version=6.1.3.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=c5687fc88969c44d"
connectionStringName="db1"
applicationName="test"/>
<add
name="rp2"
type="MySql.Web.Security.MySQLRoleProvider, MySql.Web, Version=6.1.3.0, Culture=neutral,
PublicKeyToken=c5687fc88969c44d"
connectionStringName="db1"
applicationName="test"/>

My application starts with a login screen. Based on what the user selects, I would like to control which database to connect to. (DB1 vs DB2). The problem is, when the application starts the Role Provider defaults to "rp1". Is there a way I can change the default provider during runtime?

Web Forms :: Include Htm In Aspx From External File?

Jul 18, 2010

Depending on a parameter, I want to include html from different files in an aspx page (this is a section of the page). Here is how I am trying to do it:

in aspx file:

[Code]....

in C#

[Code]....

The problem is, whenever I edit the "include" files in VS, VS saves them as UTF-8. Then when I open the web page, there are three extra characters where the included html starts. If I go into a different editor, I can change the format to ANSI and then it displays okay in the web page.

I have two questions: 1. Is there a way I can save the file in VS as ANSI so I don't get the three garbage characters? (I tried saving as file types .htm, .txt, and .inc but none work.) 2. Is there a better way to do this so it does not matter if the file is UTF-8 or ANSI?

Web Forms :: Saving XML File At The External Application?

Apr 7, 2010

I'm trying to figure out how to save my XML file in the outside location.

I have a Main web app that uses an XML file as a datasource for one of it's pages. This XML file is generated manually by accessing a utuility page in the same app. I created a utility app that resides outside of the Main app ( it's on my C:/Inetpub/wwwroot) but it should save an XML file in the directory of the Main applicatoin. My utility works fine if I need to save to C:/Inetpub/wwwroot/XMLFiles) but I when I try to access the file at the Main application something like that:

objXML.Save(Server.MapPath("../../_MainApp/App_Dev/Marketing/Tests.xml"));

It gives me an error: System.Web.HttpException: Cannot use a leading .. to exit above the top directory. If I just type full URL it says that URI cannot be resolved.. How can I access that Tests.xml file to update it?

Web Forms :: Best Practice For Starting An External Process From Web App?

Mar 24, 2011

I need to essentially make a command line tool available via a web interface. This tool would need to be run ON the web server, not the client machine. e.g.: someCommand.exe -aSwitch param1 param2 The tool will be in a windows integrated auth web app on an intranet. I have not had to do anything like this before, so I want to find out how others handle this, what is the recommended best practice? a quick google first showed someone using system.diagnostic.process... so to start playing I did something like this, just to see if it works, it does:

[Code]....

I won't be running cmd.exe, that's just to test with. The actual command line tool I will be using is not on my dev machince right now. . is using system.diagnostics.process, processStartInfo, and start method acceptable? my goals:

1. use recommended best practices, especially with regard to security
2. I'd like to start the command, and use ajax to display the commands output as it runs, and of course I need to know if it was successfull or not.

Web Forms :: Running External Process From Button Click?

Sep 18, 2010

We need assistance with a portion of a major web application project scheduled to begin user testing within 10 days. The troublesome part of the code calls an external application when a button is clicked in Web page. When run from a command prompt or bat file, the external application, App.exe, runs perfectly producing the desired result. We created a test page and a small console application, Con.exe, to test the button code with a known quantity. The test application runs perfectly when the button in the Web page is clicked. However when we change the code to run App.exe instead of Con.exe, the App.exe code will not execute. We even tried creating a bat file to execute App.exe. Like the exe, the bat file executes from the command prompt or when double-clicked,but fails to run when called as a process from the button click event. Can anyone assist us? Here is the C# code: (.Net 3.5 sp1)

using System;
using System.Collections;
using System.Configuration;
using System.Data;
using System.Linq;

Web Forms :: Controls Of Usercontrol Not Recognized In External Javascript?

Nov 19, 2010

<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
var loadPanelID = "<%=ajaxLoadingPanel.ClientID%>";

Now I pass this value in the onclick event of button click (Let the funtion name be Fun(loadPanelID) ) . The controls is recognised in the .js file. Everything is fine till now. Now i need to call the same javascript method Fun() from the button click of usercontrol.

<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
var loadPanelID = "<%=ajaxLoadingPanel1.ClientID%>";
</script>

I have ajaxLoadingPanel1 in the usercontrol and I have defined global variable as in the first one in ascx and passed that value to Fun() method. But this time it gives error called "loadpanelID" is undefined.
