Aug 17, 2010
I have a requirement wherein a SQL query will be given in a text file.
The text file has to be read , the SQL query needs to be parsed and the column names, table names and where clauses have to be extracted and inserted into separate tables.

I've recently used the CreateUserWizard to add firstname, middlename and lastname to my aspnet_Profile table. I was wondering how I would go about placing these values in a dropdownlist (ddlEmployees) so that I may wind up with a list displaying these values concatenated, eg. Mary Anne Brant, Joseph Ezra Shultz etc. That's the firstname, middlename and lastname from the profiles table.

This query works perfectly on the query analyser.
But when configuring the Table adapter ,I try executing the query and i get 0 rows affected.
What could I be getting wrong in this case.
NB:Existing GalleryID has been supplied.

A follow up question concerning the DAL layer part .. The first question about dealing with large objectsI have one table (PlacesTable) that is connected by like 6 other tables (1:Many and Many:Many relations)
In my DAL should I put a big query that join the 6 tables + the m:m reference tables (btw it produces multiple data that I don't need Please refer to my old question) and place all the data in it's specific object property or, should I use a single query for each table and create an object for each fetched table .. and finally send those to the UI ?If I wasn't clear enough please let me know what I further information do you need to know!

I have a webpage that displays the results of a query on a table. The resulting list is sorted by town:
New York
Hyatt Regency Waldorf Astoria
Paris
Hotel du Louvre Hotel Le Meurice
I've been asked to add to this list another sublist of nearby hotels. The intended result is:
New York
Hyatt Regency Waldorf Astoria nearby hotels:
hotel 1 hotel 2
Paris
Hotel du Louvre Hotel Le Meurice nearby hotels:
hotel 3 hotel 4
I've got a TableAdapter set up in VS2010 so that I can query the table for nearby hotels with "@town" as the parameter. So at the end of each list of hotels in a town, I need to display the results of this query.
If the query turns up no records (no nearby hotels), I don't want to display anything. If it turns up 1 or more records, I want to display the list of nearby hotels.
I am trying to set up a conditional "if" statement that checks to see if any records returned but am getting an error when I try to build:
Error 3 'Maine_Innkeeper_Site_2010.App_Code.DataAccessLayer.MaineInnsDatasetTableAdapters.membersTableAdapter.GetNearbyProperties(string)' is a 'method', which is not valid in the given context E:Ed dataclientsMaine InnkeepersMIA website 2010Maine Innkeeper Site 2010lodging-search-output.aspx.cs 49 49 Maine Innkeeper Site 2010 [Code]....

This may be something simple, but I am completely new to ASP.NET. I have been reading some tutorials based on W3Schools, and I have copied one of the files and tried to play with it by changing an element with a value to storing that same value in the attribute. Here is the edited XML (my.xml):
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<countries>
<country>
<text value="N">Norway</text>
</country>
<country>
<text value="S">Sweden</text>
</country>
</countries>
I want to extract the N and S and use them as tooltips. Here is my aspx file:
<%@ Import Namespace="System.Data" %>
<script runat="server">
sub Page_Load
if Not Page.IsPostBack then
dim mycdcatalog=New DataSet
my.ReadXml(MapPath("my.xml"))
my.DataSource=my
my.DataBind()
end if
end sub
</script>
<html>
<body>
form runat="server">
<asp:Repeater id="my" runat="server">
HeaderTemplate>
table border="1" width="100%">
<tr>
<th>Name</th>
</tr>
</HeaderTemplate>
<ItemTemplate>
<tr>
<td title="<%#Container.DataItem.("text").Attributes["value"]%><%#Container.DataItem("text")%> </td>
</tr>
</ItemTemplate>
<FooterTemplate>
</table>
</FooterTemplate>
</asp:Repeater>
</form>
</body>
</html>
What have I missed here?

Every morning we get a few hundred emails from our various customers servers that tell us how their backup went that previous night. Somebody has to go through these and fill out an excel spread sheet. I would like to automate this, we have our own server running a .NET application so i can schedule something every morning.
There are two main parts. The first is i want to know how to create a table that has customers down the left and dates accross the right, they are called pivot tables in access but not sure how to recreate them in MSSQL and to do it on the fly as i dont want to have to sit there entering 100's of days at a time.
The second is that differnt customers use differnt backup solutions, so i want to write some code that scans a particular mailbox in exchange, looks for emails that have come in in the past 12 hours, look at the from email address and match that to one in the database, then according to the subject line it will be able to identify what type of backup solution it is, e.g. if it says "Backup Exec Job completd Sucessfully" it knows its backup exec and will look for a particular text (completed successfully, completed with exceptions, no media etc) and can insert that, or if its a differnet backup solution then go and look at a specific place in that email for it.

I get this error while trying to run my project: "Column name 'UserID' appears more than once in the result column list." Indeed, the query generated in my SqlTableProfileProvider.vb is the following (text in brackets [] has been changed):
"IF EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM [table] WHERE UserId = @UserId) BEGIN UPDATE [table] SET UserID=@Value0, LastUpdatedDate=@LastUpdatedDate WHERE UserId = '[Guid]'END ELSE BEGIN INSERT [table] (UserId, UserID, LastUpdatedDate ) VALUES ('[Guid]', @Value0,
@LastUpdatedDate) END"
I'll emphasize that the above statement is generated in SqlTableProfileProvider.vb, which was written by .Net people. While I have little control over its source, I've apparently given the fodder whereby the mistake can be generated. Any clues as to why UserID is being written twice in the statement?

First, I'm running my application on my local Win 7 box, and viewing the site on the same box.
I have several session variables set while interacting with my application. When I go to check the data in the database through the Database Explorer (Show Table Data), my session is lost. This is instant.
Why does this happen? Is there a way to prevent it?

Im writing a bit of code that will extract the contents of a gridview to excel. I have all the parts working except for one. In my page_load i fetch the data from the database and then have the user select some options which filters the data and then the gridview gets populated. The problem im having is that the Response call doesnt seem to get the data from the gridview if i enclose the database fetch command within if not page.ispostback in the page_load
I have some test pages where i just fetched the data from the database bound it in a gridview in the Page_load. then on a button click export the data in the gridview to excel. Works fine if i DONT enclose the fetch command within not page.ispostback but outputs an empty excel file if i do.
Now i have to use not page.ispostback in the actual webpages because the users have to make selections which will filter the original dataset. How do i get this to work?
The page is also implementing AJAX if that helps. Here's an example of what i have:

I have a dataGrid with ButtonColumns in my asp page and I would like to do the following to:
When a row is clicked, I want to be able to:
1 - Hide all rows and display only the clicked row dynamically/on the fly.
trying to loop thru the datagrid and display only the Row index passed by the OnITemComman - but unsure of how to do it.
2 - Extract the row values (all cells in the row) to use as parameters in a query.
Used many ways of many examples but i always get a blank value. Managed to get the button text in the class but i need the full row values not just the cell clicked.

I'm coding my first VB web application, which allows a user to input an order number and pull up invoice and shipping data linkd to that order number.
I have the first bit down and working, where the existing data in the database is displayed in the GridViews. One of the GridViews is set up to allow data editing, and I have syntax set to make the row editable, but I'm struggling with getting the "Update" link/functionality to work. I want to assign the values in each cell to an object (ie. 'dgInvNumber' for Invoice Number), but everything I've tried (been doing a ton of Google searching for help, but no luck yet) keeps giving me an "Object reference not set
to an instance of an object" error when I click the Update link for the row of data being edited.
At this point, I don't know what syntax to use to get the edited values out of the GridView row and assigned to objects for each cell (I have a total of 10 cells that can be edited in a row).
For background info, the GridView is set up with Bound Fields. I'm using Visual Studio 2005. Alot of places I've looked talk about TextBox controls and using FindControl. Also seen some places talk about DataBoundLiteral Controls. I tried the latter with no luck (still getting error). For TextBox controls, I don't understand how to use that part, since it mentions referencing the TextBox controls declared in the EditItemTemplates of the TemplateField column fields in the GridView control. But I didn't set up anything in the EditItemTemplates (that I know of).
