Mar 8, 2011All the examples and websites i have looked at redirect a user to the error.aspx page when an error occurs. How do you just display a friendly error message on the page the user is viewing saying something like "Sorry unable to do whatever" I've tried using a try catch block on my class that executes a stored procedure and put another try catch on the controller, but this does not work and i still get the default error message (System.InvalidOperationException was unhandled by user code) My code is below:

Throwing Exception Message Giving Internal Server Error HTTP Code 500 On Live Site

when a user enters a bad email I am doing a check on this and throwing an exception message as follows, this works fine on the test site but for some reason the same code on the live site gives a "internal server error" (http code 500). The code below:

not certain why this is happening, I assume that it's some server or config difference between the test and live sites. has anyone seen this before? For a quick fix i'm registering javascript alert and showing the same text so it works but I would like to figure out why the code above is not working.
Forms Data Controls :: Best Way To Display A Friendly "error" Message?
Dec 30, 2010I have an asp.net web application that queries a database with a SELECT query in a stored procedure. If the server returns an error, I want to display a friendly "sorry, there was a problem with your search" type message.
Should I handle this with a custom error page, and a redirect to that page in web.config? Or can put some text in a Label Control and set its property to visible if there are errors? I've seen the latter done with a Try/Catch arrangement in the code behind, but not sure if I can do that here. What would you recommend?

Mar 31, 2010I've tried to implement two different solutions that use either and HttpModule or and HttpHandler to do URLRewriting for me. These work great on IIS 7 within my local development environment in Integrated and Classic modes. Currently the production server is running IIS 6.0 on a shared hosting environment. It appears that the request at least hits both the Module and Handler as the URL above redirect to the particular friendly url, but it doesn't redirect and hit hte Module or Handler again. Instead I get a 404 error for the friendly URL.

But when deployed at server, it does not get .tried putting try and catch in page_load and in global.asax and I have set Application_Error to redirect to that page and also set <customErrors defaultRedirect to that page also

Getting HTTP Error Remotely Instead Of 'Connection Was Reset Message'?
Jan 13, 2010On an ASP.NET Web Application I have an upload file functionality. I'm restricting the file size up to 10 MB by configuring the inside web.config the maxAllowedContentLength attribute. (I'm using IIs 7.0 BTW).
It get the desired HTTP Error when I access the application from the local machine:
HTTP Error 404.13 - Not Found The request filtering module is configured to deny a request that exceeds the request content length.
When I access the application from another machine I get
The connection was reset The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
How can I get a more descriptive error when my application is accessed remotely?

Jan 12, 2010I have a WCF client test harness where I'm using a "client message inspector" endpoint behavior to "pick off" raw requests and response messages going to and from a service and save them for later display in the UI.
This works great, except for the use case where invalid credentials are passed (Basic Authentication). The server returns an HTTP 401 along with a SOAP fault in the body containing details of what happened. I have no control over the service, so this behavior cannot be changed.
Because the HTTP 401 is returned as a WebException, my message inspector never fires and I can't get to the raw response. This exception eventually gets to the UI in the form a MessageSecurityException.
Is there any way to suppress this so the message inspector's AfterReceiveReply still fires? or is there somewhere else I can access the entire raw response?

Apr 12, 2010I have just installed IIS manager version 6.1 build 7600 and visual studio 2010 (latest additions of both).
I have followed all the instructions and given the correct permisions ect for IIS to work with my directory. I have a helloworld website that has worked via the localhost server many times, but almost hourly something happens to the settings in IIS and it starts throwing errors.
The current error copied below. Basically I am wondering a few things...
1. Why does my IIS constantly do something so that it works one minute and then it wont the next (this is with an identical helloworld.htm file so I know it is not something I am doing with the file that is messing it up).

Apr 20, 2010I am currently trying to setup our website on a windows 2008 R2 64bit machine without much success. When I try to run the website I get the error detailed below. This only happens when I run the site under .NET 4. It works when I run it under .NET 2.
I have also tried going to a test aspx page to see what happens and it also give me the same error so it is obviously something to do with .NET 4 or the way I have it set up. I am thinking it might be a permissions thing but I am not sure what permissions should be set where. Please note this is the full version of .NET 4. The error I keep getting is:
