View 6 RepliesWhen you use ASP.NET web site (instead of web application model) and add reference to an assembly from local folder, Visual Studio, it seems, understands that this local assembly is also in GAC and so does NOT copy this assembly to bin folder (as it does with non-GAC assemblies), but simply adds new record in web.config file.
Why such a behaviour? Is it possible to force copy to bin folder (I need this since .dll is not on target environment)? I can add assembly to bin folder as file and it will work, but in this case bin folder contents will be in source control, which is not good.
I had a web reference set in my VS2008 ASP.NET project, but due to some source control weirdness it is no longer listed in the project. I have the set of files in the Web References folder under my project. There's a .wsdl, .disco and several .datasource files. Is there any way to re-add this web reference through the existing files rather than using the "Add Web Reference" dialog?
View 1 RepliesHow can I ensure that web application converted from 2003 visual studio to 2008 visual studio
to have two files as it is when create a web file in visual studio 2008.The web application is in Chsarp. I have converted these filesfrom 2003 to 2008 but they still have three files each.
what would i have done wrong in IIS setting because of which when i make website with VS 2008 and try browse then say "Internet can't display web Page".If i try to make webapplication and run then it works fine.I have vs2005 also on my machine....and with that all works fine...its just the "website" with VS2008 , i am not able to run...

My System Info:
OS: Windows 7 - Ultimate - 64bit
VS: Visual Studio 2008 - Professional (and problem with my VS2010 installed)
Problem:
I have a small project and build it to library .dll file with some function util.
From an other website (with diffirence solution). I added reference the .dll before to website.
In website, I declaration to using the function in library (dll file before). But I found error:
Error 1 Type 'LibraryName' is not defined.
And in VS2010 the problem is same.
But, run website on an other computer, it work normally.
My client gave me this web solution, in it various projects, and the problematic project (for me) is the Web Site.
I've copied the code to test web server (2008) and installed VS 2008 so I could step through the code on the server due to some weirdness.
Anyhow, when I open the solution locally on my personal computer, it runs on Cassini [URL] because I'm not on a server OS. However, when I run the app on the web server, when I hit F5, it runs oh [URL].
When I'm running the code on the server, how do I point the web site to use Cassini?
I have an asp.net website with a reference to a class library. I can reference the class library in the aspx pages but how do I configure my site so that I can also reference the class library from a .cs file in app code?
View 1 RepliesI'm aware of the following two different types of web projects in Visual Studio 2008:Website projectWeb application projectA web application project can reference a signed assembly as long as the web application's assembly is also signed with the same key. However, this doesn't work with the website project because there is no place to sign an assembly. I think this is because the assembly is compiled dynamically on the server?
Anyway, is it possible to get the website project working with this signed assembly? Or will I have to convert this website project into a web application project?Edit:The following situation has required me to ask for clarification in this matter:I have a class library that is being referenced by several other projects in my solution in Visual Studio. One of the projects is a windows application that will be deployed to specific external users. In order to make sure that the application is using the correct assembly and to also prevent others from using the assembly (I am aware of the limitations with respect to its effectiveness), all assemblies have been signed and all the classes in the library are declared as Friend (internal).
The website project doesn't seem to have a way for me to sign its assembly and I get the following message when attempting to use anything from the library: "CLASS is not assessable in this context because it is 'Friend'", which is to be expected. The following attributes are inside the AssemblyInfo.vb file in my class library project:
<Assembly: InternalsVisibleTo("OtherProject1, PublicKey=AAA...")>
<Assembly: InternalsVisibleTo("OtherProject2, PublicKey=AAA...")>
...
My Conclusion:Looks like the cleanest way to do this would be to convert the website into a web application but this would require a bit of time to do since our site is pretty fleshed out already and as pointed out in other discussions, can be quite a pain to do. Going forward, I think creating a web application in the first place may have been a better idea and much more flexible for future development.
I am currently using VS 2008 Pro for an ASP.Net class. I got VS from school as part of MSDNAA program. It is version 9.0.21022.8 with .NET framework 3.5 SP1.
My problem is that when I start it up, it does not give me the option to Create or Open a Website. It only gives me the option to Create or Open a Project. So, when I start my homework or in-class assignments, I have to press Shift+Alt+N to Create a Website.
Where the problem comes in is after I start working on the website, I hit Save and it changes it to a Solution. This seemed to have caused a problem with BIND commands being lost in my last homework assignment. Is there something wrong with my install or a setting I can change? I'd rather not reinstall it unless I have to since it is such a pain to uninstall it in the first place.

i am very new to using asp.net and visual studio. Let me first give you a little heads up on what is going on. About 2 years ago i bought a caned auction website from a company, and now i feel like i am ready to edit the theme website to make it look better. I asked the lady what programs i need to be familiar with and she told me Visual Studio 2008. This is my thing, i would like to edit the website and see the result at the same time without having to edit code all day long and then upload it to my server.
View 2 RepliesIs there any tool for Visual Studio 2008 which can reformat ASPX code to make it more presentable (eg insert line breaks, format the lines so they wrap when necessary, etc)?
View 5 RepliesI'm about to start a new module in my existing web application project (already completed 3 modules), due to more data entry and volume of data handling my PM informed me to go this module on windows application (vb.net), but i'm requesting him to go with web application since i'm much familiar in web applcation and all my completed module on web.
But he is thinking on performance part too, if i get some idea / suggestion on the same so that i can clear and i will go with either option.
The module is Service Billing with LPO Control, Billing, Proforma, eBilling, eApproval, online billing etc.
I got a probem when debugging web application using VS 2008. Here is the situation:I marked two breakpoints, one in the Page_Load event and the other on the button click event. When the debugger hit the breakpoint in the page_load event, everything was fine but when it hit the breakpoint in the button click event, VS 2008 suddenly stopped debugging. It seemed that the IIS worker process was terminated.I really don't understand this situation.

I want to develop a mobile web application in Visual Studio 2008.
I have 2 questions.
1) Should i use mobile web controls or Asp.Net controls for new application?
2) Wy there are no mobile Templates in VS 2008? Normally Microsoft replaces the the older technology with new one, but why it has just removed it ... ?
