My web application is using the asp.net cache object to store data from the database. I am looking for an elegant to invalidate cache objects but haven't come up with anything elegant yet. It is easy to invalidate a single record or a list of all records in a single table, by keeping track of their cache keys. However I may have any number of lists of subsets of a table's data. I would like to invalidate only the cache records of the lists that contain a particular record, when that record changes. I don't want to have to invalidate all the lists of data for that table if only one of the lists contain that record.

i've got a website that uses OutputCache attribute to cache pages. Works great.
Now, I'm in the middle of R&D'ing scaling up this site to be in a web farm. Along with the usual suspects for webfarm pain ... I've noticed (pretty quickly/obviously) that the OutputCache from Server_A doesn't invalidate the OutputCache from Server_B .. if a try and invalidate a single server's OutputCache. This makes total sense -> how can S_A 'tell' S_B to invalidate when they are physically 2 seperate machines, etc?
So - what are our options?
Velocity? I understand this will move the caching to a different layer .. which means that the final result (output) will always be required to be determined .. as opposed to the OutputCache whic remembers the final output content (yes, varby gives different versions, etc.. which is totally fine). So even though the poco or business objects are all sync'd, there's still that last rendering effort required (even if it's tiny .. compared to the effort to generate/sync business objects).

I read few xml files from a location and cache them using Http context cache. Anytime the xml files changes i have to do a IISReset to view the latest changes.
I use this
System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Cache
I have to use the caching as i don't want to read all the xml files all the time. i read it once and caches them for a day. They get reset whenever apppool recyles or anyone manualy do a IISReset.
Is there anyway in asp.net to invalidate the cache if someones changes the xml file.

I have the following .NET VB code to set and read objects in cache on a per user basis (i.e. a bit like session)
'' Public Shared Sub CacheSet(ByVal Key As String, ByVal Value As Object)
Dim userID As String = HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name
HttpContext.Current.Cache(Key & "_" & userID) = Value
End Sub
Public Shared Function CacheGet(ByVal Key As Object)
Dim returnData As Object = Nothing
Dim userID As String = HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name
returnData = HttpContext.Current.Cache(Key & "_" & userID)
Return returnData
End Function
I use these functions to hold user data that I don't want to access the DB for all the time. However, when the data is updated, I want the cached item to be removed so it get created again.
How do I make an Item I set disappear or set it to NOTHING or NULL?

I want to be able to make the first line blank, in this case "about us" and still keep the same dyamtic alignment on my nav menu. Right now, if i take the "about us" title text out, it messy up my dyamtic or on hover nav menu. What would be best is i can replace those letters with spaces but it won't work with just blanks. Any idea on how i would not display the "about us" but keep everything as is?

I'd like to make navigation menu like one in [url=http://www.eveonline.com/]here[/url]. I thought about using TreeView, but I couldn't make "collapse" indicators to disapear. If I set ShowExpandCollapse property to "false" those indicators disapear, but tree becomes expanded and static. That's not what I want to achieve.

I have a site with a few pages, and I decided to have my navigation button (to go from page to page) on my site.master page so every page looks the same. Two questions:
1. is that the correct thing to do? seems to work fine, I'm just not sure if it is proper or not.
2. with the navigation/buttons being on the site.master. How can I pass an "id" from one page to another.
Example:
<asp:Button ID="Button5" runat="server" CssClass="style2" ForeColor="#000084"
PostBackUrl="~/Inbounds.aspx" Text="Inbounds" />
I want the postbackurl to be "~/Inbounds.aspx?id=" a value from a textbox on the page you are leaving. More or less to pass a company name or ID number from page to page, so the queries know who the "owner" is?

I have a site that uses authentication. I will be displaying links to other sites.Currently I am using Link Buttons because the link maybe to another site or a file in our DB so the Link Button allows me to place the DB id field into the command argument.So when the user clicks on one of the buttons I check to see if it match's a web site and if so I want to direct the user to the site. Here is the code.
[Code]....
strfile being the text of the button. This works, however it opens it in the same window which is less then desirable. I would like to open it in a new window. I have triedclient side scripting, I have tried process.start, and other ways to open the link in a new window. When I use these methods and I click on the button the page posts back but the link is never opened. I do have the Link Buttons inside a update panel and haveadded the button as a trigger with the same results. I have also moved the button out side of the update panel same results. Also the Link Buttons are inside a panel control.Another point this is being done in the code behind VB.net.

I have a small a problem with my navigation control. My navigation control has many menuitems. But here is just an extract to explain my problem.
<asp:MenuItem Text="Customer">
<asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/CustomerLogin.aspx" Text="Log In"></asp:MenuItem>
<asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/CustomerProduct.aspx" Text="Product"></asp:MenuItem>
<asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/CustomerInformation.aspx" Text="Information"></asp:MenuItem>
</asp:MenuItem>
so when i put my mouse on Customer, the child menuitem drops vertically. The problem is I have a panel on the page which I use Gray Color as it background color and child menuitems are hidden behind that panel. Is there a way to show the menuitems on top of the panel beside moving the panel further down?

in .Net 4 i'm using a menu apapter like so:
<asp:SiteMapDataSource ID="mainNav" runat="server" ShowStartingNode="false" /><asp:Menu DataSourceID="mainNav" runat="server" MaximumDynamicDisplayLevels="0" />
But it's outputting a flyout type menu - all the top level links are showing and have arrows next to them. Then when you rollover these the next level is shown.
How do i get rid of this and get back to having just a un-ordered list being output?

played w/ visual web developer 2010 and liked the template that i was given by creating a new project using the "asp.net web application visual basic" However my company is using visual studio 2008 and we are not upgrading anytime soon. So i'm trying to remake that template in visual web developer 2008. I've got 90% of it transfered and working, the styles and master.site and all work, except the menu. It's like the CSS isn't carying over right, the drop downs work on mouse over but I don't have the nice puffy buttons that change background color when i mouse over. I've dug though the css and asp code and can't find anything thats not linking up. Does anyone have any idea how to get this last 10% figured out?
<div class="clear hideSkiplink">
<asp:Menu ID="NavigationMenu" runat="server" CssClass="menu" EnableViewState="false" IncludeStyleBlock="false" Orientation="Horizontal">
<Items>
<asp:MenuItem NavigateUrl="~/Default.aspx" Text="Home"/>
<asp:MenuItem Text="Obituaries" Value="Obituaries">
<asp:MenuItem Text="Recent" Value="Recent"></asp:MenuItem>

Here is my web.sitemap code:
[Code]....
I wanna to show bread crumbs navigation like:
Home > Column1 > Content
the problem is: "~/Index.aspx" and "~/Column.aspx?ColumnId=1" are actual URLs and navigation bar: "Home > Column1" really works,
but "~/Content.aspx?ColumnId=1" is only the beginning part of actual dynamic URL, for example: it may be
~/Content.aspx?ColumnId=1&NewsId=12598 or ~/Content.aspx?ColumnId=1&NewsId=37215
all the previous Urls are articles of Column1 with same "~/Content.aspx?ColumnId=1" but are followed with different "&NewsId=number".
So, how can I realize this kind of navigation bar?
Home > Column1 > Content

I'm designing a website that should have horizontal menus (main menu, and sub menus) underneath each other like:
Home | **Categories** | Contact Us VBScript | VB.NET | ASP.NET
(** indicates the selected main menu item) Where VBScript, VB.NET, and ASP.NET are menu items in the Categories main menu item.
Initially, I tried using a separate sitemap file, but came across an error that forced me to write a custom xml document for the sub menu (code below)
[Code]....
I've created an asp:Menu control to use for the sub menu (it's blank until a main menu item that has child items is selected), and I'm databinding it on MainMenuItemClick (code below)
[Code]....
MainMenu has it's items hard coded into the html, but I'm going to move that over a sitemap later, what I'm struggling with, is how do I get the SubMenu items to navigate to the URLs I'm specifying?
