Web Forms :: Multiple Layout Varieties For A Single User Control?
Feb 2, 2010
I have a user control that contains an image of a product along with some product details.
If the product image is landscape, I want to render the control one way, and if the product image is portrait, I want to render the control a second way.
Example HTML Layouts (drastically simplified):
<div><table><tr><td>
<p><strong>XXXXXX</strong></p>
</td></tr><table></div>
versus
<div><table><tr><td>
<p><em>XXXXXX</em></p>
</td></tr><table></div>
Right now, both layouts are rendered. How can I conditionally render one layout and not the other?

It's simple to create both user control from the two world : ASP.NET+Razor or MVC 3.0.But i do not known how to consume the user control FROM the razor"_layout.chtml" page.I want to put such thing within the layout page: <uc:MyTag Prop1="" Prop2="" />So i need to declare this directive at top of the layout file : <%@ Register TagPrefix="uc" TagName="MyTag" Src="Controls/Mytag.ascx" %>

I have a user control I'm building that has a table layout with two sets of radio buttons, like:
how I could use a radiobuttonlist for each set of vertical buttons within this layout, unless I used a rowspan on each col, but that seems problematic from a layout perspective? I would rather use a RBL from a programming standpoint.
If I instead used a set of radiobuttons with a groupname for each, how do I get/set the selected button (for each set) from outside the UC?

I have a user control which contains a number of child controls. I want to be able to change the layout of the control (i.e. change the markup surrounding the child controls) via a property of the user control, but I don't want to have to duplicate the child controls themselves. This precludes using, say, a MultiView with different versions of the layout in each view, since in that case I'd have to duplicate the controls. I'd also rather use markup than emit the code for the control directly (as you'd do in a server control).
To give a contrived example, say I have a label and a textbox. In one layout, I want the label and textbox to be contained by divs and laid out on top of each other. In an alternate layout, I want them to be contained side by side in a table.
Should I just go ahead and duplicate the controls between each view? It seems like a violation of the DRY principle, but I'm not sure if I have much choice. A partial solution would be making the views of a multiview into naming containers so that I could at least save myself the time of having to prefix the duplicate control IDs with something to make them unique.

I had implemented FileUpload code. In which for every particular Id, it creates Folder/Directory (if not exist) on Page _load.Then inside that particular Id's folder it will upload single or multiple files.
HTML:
<asp:Label ID="LFileUpload" runat="server" Text="Upload File"></asp:Label>
<asp:FileUpload ID="FileUpload1" runat="server" Width="300px" AllowMultiple="true"/>
<asp:Button ID="btnUpload" runat="server" Text="Upload" OnClick="UploadFile" ValidationGroup="none"/>
<asp:Label ID="LMsg" runat="server" Text="" Visible="false"></asp:Label>

I am looking at how best to prevent a single user account logging on multiple times in a webforms application. I know that MembershipUser.IsOnline exists, but I've read a few forum and blog entries suggesting that this can be unreliable, particularly in scenarios where a user closes a browser (without logging out) and attempts to logon with a different machine or browser.
I looked at implementing a last past the post type system; when a user logs on older users are simply kicked off. It seems that FormsAuthentication.Signout() only works for the current user.
Am I missing a trick, is there a better way to prevent the same username logging on from multiple different locations?

I have a stored procedure that returns 3 tables within the single recordset it returns. If I set a SqlDataSource to get data from this procedure, it works, but it only returns the first table. I want to have a GridView display the data from the 2nd or 3rd table using a SqlDataSource, but I can't figure out how to specify a particular table.
While there are some posts discussing this out there, I can't get a definitive answer about whether or not this is even possible (?). In a worst-case scenario, I can create another SP that only returns the 3rd table - but that creates a little maintenance headache that I would prefer to avoid.

We need to upload multiple files using ASP.Net in one go. One option is to use the ASP.Net FileUpload control but it seems that it can't upload multiple files in one go. Any other option or ASP.Net FileUpload control can do multiple uploads in one go with some tuning?

I am having a very hard time in consuming a very simple web user control that I have built using a Web Application project in VS 2010. The user control works fine as long as the consuming aspx page is in the same project. But after deploying the project using Web Deployment Project into a single assembly I am not able to use it correctly from another aspx page which is in a stand-alone project. The error I see is a null reference exception. Here are the steps that I am following:
1 Create a web user control named WebUserControl_Label using a web application project. This control works fine when used in an webform in the same project.
This is the ASCX of my user control :
<%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="WebUserControl_Label.ascx.cs" Inherits="TestWebAppWithCustomControl.WebUserControl_Label" ClassName="TestWebAppWithCustomControl.Controls" %>
<asp:Label ID="Label1" runat="server" ></asp:Label>
This is the code behind:
namespace TestWebAppWithCustomControl
{
public partial class WebUserControl_Label : System.Web.UI.UserControl
{
private string _labelText;
public string LabelText
{
set
{
Label1.Text = value;
}
get
{
return Label1.Text;
}
}
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
}
}
}
2. Create a single assembly for the user control above using a Web Deployment project. The name of the assemby is TestWebAppWithCustomControl.
3. Create a webform in another web application project to use WebUserControl_Label user control. This project has TestWebAppWithCustomControl.dll added as a referemce.
This is how I am using the custom control above in an aspx page:
<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="Default.aspx.cs" Inherits="ConsumeTestWebAppUserControl._Default" %>
<%@ Register Assembly="TestWebAppWithCustomControl" Namespace="TestWebAppWithCustomControl" TagPrefix="GBS" %>
<head runat="server">
<title></title>
</head>
<body>
<form id="form1" runat="server">
<div>
<GBS:WebUserControl_Label Id="label1" runat="server" LabelText="This is custom label" />
</div>
</form>
</body>
</html>
The problem is that .NET throws a Null Reference Exception when its trying to set the label text via the LabelText property. It looks like that the label control that lives inside the WebUserControl_Label user control is not getting instantiated and is always null.
I have found a few articles online that talk about creating such distributable user controls using ASP.NET website projects. But if possible I would like to stick with the web application project because of the benefits it brings.

Before I get to the question, let me give a bit of background. I'm trying to develop a custom caching mechanism that I can apply to custom built user controls. (Please be aware that I know that there are some built in caching mechanism in .NET) Depending on certain flags set declaratively in the mark-up the control should load a cached version of its previously rendered content or execute normally (and if certain flags are set it should generate a cache of its content for next time it loads). I would like to be able to pass certain flags declaratively in the mark-up and being able to check their value at Page Init and, depending on the flag value, determine whether the control should load a cached version or not.
<uc:MyUC ID="N1" runat="server"
CacheProp='<%# SomeEnum.A | SomeEnum.B |SomeEnum.C %>'
PropA='<%# this.SomePropA %>'
PropB='<%# (this.SomePropB %>'
PropC='<%# this.SomePropC %>'
/>
The problem that I'm facing is that as far as I'm aware I can only get the value of the properties declaratively assigned in the mark-up if I called the DataBind(). However I'm faced with two problems: Firstly calling this.DataBind() from within MyUC will trigger the binding of all its child controls which would defeat the purpose of the cache; also all user controls have been built so that they will not call DataBind() before the LoadComplete event has fired, so to make sure that the parent controls they live in has done its initialisation and has computed the properties that are declaratively passed to the child user control (ie PropA, PropB, PropC).And now the question: is there a way to bind the CacheProp property so to retrieve its value without data binding all other properties and without triggering the data binding of all its child controls?

I have a custom CRM package and I need to allow specific users have different layouts on selected screens. I do not want to support multiple software packages so I am thinking that I have some type of interface that allows a user to select what fields they want to input on a given screen. However, what is the easiest way to make this happen? I am thinking that I have some type of XML file that is read that a user can define.

I have an ASP.NET page inside of an ASP.NET Master page, and inside the page I have two instances of the same web user control. I have given them different IDs, but when I click a button on the first user control it causes the second user control to do the expected activity and the first one does nothing. Is there something I need to do to make sure that the controls don't get confused?

I have user control page (.acsx file), which has following
<form action=abcd.aspx id="safsdf">
<input name="q" type="text" value="Search this site" size="13" onfocus="this.value='';"/> //this is input box
<input type="submit" name="sa" value="Submit" />
//this is input button </form>
When user click on submit button, then it postback to same page. I have another page , which reference to this user control and that is why multiple <form> tag appears on one single page and it cause my webpage to layout incorrectly. I would like to remove <form> tag from my above user control and replace with some other alternative, which does postback to same page without using <form> tag on user control (I have to remove <form> tag from user control because I must keep my <form> tag on other page).

I have built a User Control in VB which displays two gridviews and allows a user to select an item in the first gridview and display multiple rows in the second grid with the key of the selected item from the first. The data to be displayed is passed to the User Control as a datatable object via a public property of the User Control.
The user control works perfectly, but to allow the the subs in the codebehind of the User Control to access the data set when the user control is initialised, I have declared them as "Private Shared".
Having got everything to work, I now want to display multiple instances of the same User Control with different datasets.
However, because my data objects are defined as "Private Shared" each instance of the user control is overwriting the data of the others.
I can fix this problem by removing the "Shared" keyword, and have also tried setting them to "Protected" instead but then my variables expire after being set and contain "Nothing" when I get to the "RowCommand" event in the Code Behind.
I'm sure I must be doing something stupid, because surely the whole idea of User Controls is to make reusable code drven by parameters.
Here is my code:
Main Program .aspx
[Code]....
Main Program Code Behind
[Code]....
User Control .ascx
