Web Forms :: Non-validating Button Will Not Postback Invalid Form?
Nov 10, 2010
(Using ASP.Net 2.0 on Visual Studio 2005, coding in C#)I write in the hope that someone will be able to provide a clue as to how I might best overcome this issue:I've got a form with 2 RequiredFieldValidators, and 2 buttons. Button 1 has 'CausesValidation' set to 'False', and populates some of the other fields on the form from the database (via a postback).Button 2 fires the validation, then if the form is valid brings a javascript popup confirmation box and then, if true, it puts the data in the form into an email.All this is working fine. However......My problem is this: If I press button 2 with my required field(s) empty, the form quite correctly refuses to submit, and highlights the appropriate field(s) with a red *.But: if I then press button 1 (my populating button) it DOES NOT FIRE until I press it a second time!Code snippet follows (markup only - I will of course post code-behind if nec. but I don't think it is)
<script type="text/javascript">
function ConfirmSubmit()
{
[code]...

Using ASP.NET VB, I have a form with some text boxes and a Gridview. If a user clicks the Edit button on a row in the gridview, and then tries to submit the form with a row still in edit mode on the Gridview, this error is generated -
"Invalid postback or callback argument. Event validation is enabled using in configuration or <%@ Page EnableEventValidation="true" %> in a page. For security purposes, this feature verifies that arguments to postback or callback events originate from the server control that originally rendered them. If the data is valid and expected, use the ClientScriptManager.RegisterForEventValidation method in order to register the postback or callback data for validation. "

I have a web page with various controls. Two of them are dropdownlists. The first dropdownlist gets populated from an xml file on the page_load event. This works fine. To the first dropdownlist a cascadingdropdownlist extender is attached which calls a webservice each time the selection in the first dropdownlist is changed. This works fine too. Underneath my two dropdownlists I have a button which posts the page back. However, when I have made a selection in the second dropdownlist and click the button I get the following error:
Server Error in '/' Application. Invalid postback or callback argument.

I've got a template field in a gridview that contains just a simple button...

<%@ Register TagPrefix="ajaxToolkit" Namespace="AjaxControlToolkit" %>

Whenever I click the button I get the error...
Invalid postback or callback argument. Event validation is enabled using <pages enableEventValidation="true"/> in configuration or <%@ Page EnableEventValidation="true" %> in a page. I've found a decent amount of articles referencing this issue, including a couple on SO, for example...

I might just be misunderstanding, but as far as I can tell they don't really help me. How do I get this to go away without setting enableEventValidation="false"?

i have had this problem before but haven't found a solution yet. The solutions that i have come across are either bad for security or worked on old versions of the .Net framework. I am using VB.net with framework 3.5 and i get the following error when clicking on a button that is a trigger for an updatepanel:
Invalid postback or callback argument. Event validation is enabled using <pages enableEventValidation="true"/> in configuration or <%@ Page EnableEventValidation="true" %> in a page. For security purposes, this feature verifies that arguments to postback or callback events originate from the server control that originally rendered them. If the data is valid and expected, use the ClientScriptManager.RegisterForEventValidation method in order to register the postback or callback data for validation.
The msg states that you need to use the ClientScriptManager.RegisterForEventValidation but i can't find anywhere which shows a working example of this in VB.net & in .net framework 3.5. Can anyone give me a step by step guide on how to resolve this postback validation error?

I know that dynamic buttons and buttons in general don't use a typical postback and they post through the page.request.form. Okay, so in visual studio, I was able to determine that page.Request.form and in the all-keys property, i SEE my button there. It is the last item in all-keys.
When I am clicking this dynamic button which is in an updatepanel, the script below does not detect it as a button, it is still showing it as null:
public static Control GetPostBackControl(Page page)
{
Control control = null;
[Code]....
but here is the kicker, when I am traversing through the object, I am looking at the object C and the property 'ctl'. The ctl is showing me a value of "ButtonRow_0Col0" and it is of type string. This is good! But , the 'c' control object still says 'null'.

I need to validate that a user makes a selection from a select list OR they enter text into a textbox. I'm trying to figure out which validator to use. Is there a way to make a CompareValidator do this? Or would I need to write a custom validator? If custom, do I write one for each of the form elements, or does the validation happen upon submit?

I have a couple of fields on a form that will be populated with default values. I would like to put a button that will allow me to reset those fields to their default values if they have been modified. However I would like to avoid the postback so that I don't have data being sent to the database. Is it possible to add a javascript hook such that when that button is pressed I can pull the default values and populate those fields in javascript?

I developed a screen in which there are fields like first name,username,password and email. I validated these fields using javascript and came to know that javascript is not that safe. So i decided to validate on server side also. My question is whether i can use asp controls like requiredfieldvalidator, regularexpression validator to validate the form or i have to validate through server side coding??

Before committing the record from the postback of the Create or Edit method in my controller, I validate the values in the form against some business rules in the GetRuleViloations() of this domain object. The following rule example is written in two ways. The 1st one validates against the numeric values in form, the 2nd one validates using the associated object (lookup table in database) description via the foreign key. I would like to use the 2nd method, but during the Create postback the associated object is always null.

I have few dropsdowns and a button in a page. When i click on that button , i get above exception. What is the best way to fix this exception? I dont want to set enableEventValidation to false in config or at page directive.

I have a datalist which will display a list of groups from the database. In every group record, i have a button binding to it, and i give it a commandName call "joingroup" . When a user actaully clicks on the button(btnJoinGroup), the commandName fires. The problem i am facing now is, whenever i click on the button, i get this error below:

I have a script that runs during the Page_Load() event which checks a database table to make sure that the user is still owns the lock on the page. If they no longer own the lock, I disable all the controls on the page and display an
error message.My thinking was that by disabling all controls during Page_Load() I could prevent any PostBack events from occuring. For example, I have a button on the page called "Save and Quit"
