I am using web control and master page, and the resulting parameter name (from request.param) looks like this:ctl00$mainPH$CaseControl1$txtContactNameWhich is pretty stupid and if I use the web control somewhere else, it will probably have a different parameter name.

The master page consists of a search textbox, on key down event of the control I call a javascript function writtern inline of the master page. I get the value of entered in textbox in that javascript function. I have tried giving document.getElementById("<%=txtSearch.ClientID %>").value as well as document.getElementById("txtSearch").value. Both display error. I have to access the textbox control from within the master page itself!

I am setting the value of the label on the master page to the session variable of User_Id that is generated after successful login.
My problem is that I have to set the value of the asp Label in the master page manually in the code behind of every after login page I visit.
Is there any way to retrieve the value of the session User_Id directly in/from the master page's code behind rather than setting the value in each and every page's code behind file.

- videolist.ascx [user control]
-iphone_Shared_Controls_VideoList.cs (had to change the codebehind name)
- masterpages[folder]
- master.master [master page]
- Shared_MasterPages_MasterPage
I am inside the codebehind of videolist.aspx and I can not instantiate a copy of the masterpage. Ive noticed that there are no namespaces around the masterpage or the control is this normal? It is a website project. I am used to working on compiled web applications .net 1.1 style.
For the record I was able to 'see' the master page from .aspx pages but not from these controls. I cant getit through intellisense or even if I hard code and compile I get errors.
