Changing SessionID Dynamically In C#?

Jan 29, 2010

if there is a way to dynamically change the session ID from the context of a SessionStateStoreProvider (or some other customizable module) in C# for ASP.NET.

I am implementing a custom SessionStateStoreProvider, and I was thinking about augmenting the session ID to tell the store provider where to go look for a session. I've implemented a custom SessionIDManager, which lets me augment newly created session IDs with the required tag. The problem is that the desired value of that tag might change during the life of a session. For example, the session may be read from one location, but may need to written to a different location. In this instance the ID would have originally been tagged for location A, but on writing the store would want to write to location B. The tag should be updated to reflect location B for the next session read.

So, from the context of SessionStateProviderBase override...

public override void SetAndReleaseItemExclusive(HttpContext context,
string id, SessionStateStoreData item, object lockId, bool newItem)

... is it possible to change the session ID? I know that the HttpContext.Session.SessionID property is not settable. Is there some other way to feedback an update like this? Or is there a more appropriate to carry state like this across calls?

Web Forms :: Session.sessionid Returns Different Value With Each Postback?

Sep 28, 2010

I'm a bit stumped by this one. Have a VS 2008 website running on Windows 7 using the VS web server. One of the pages transfers to another page (page2). On page2, each time I cause a postback by clicking a button, I get a different session.sessionid. I was under the impression sessionid was constant throughout the session, i.e. until the browser is closed or the session expires (~20 minutes). Is this just a VS web server quirk?

Web Forms :: Changing Data On Master Page After Postback?

Jul 24, 2010

Let me set this up:I have a master page. I have a regular aspx page - this page contains a Menu and a User Control.When I click on the Menu Item, it fires my click event. This will post back. The Master Page Uses Placeholder Controls where I dynamicaly create Label Controls with information and add them to the Placeholders. These contain data with tooltips. This works great. After the Master Page and Web Page load, it will then fire the Click Event from the Menu.The problem:The Click event will update data in the database, This data may effect the values that are created on the Master Page that are placed in the Placeholder controls. I can't seem to figure out how to change that data.

What I have tried:I have created a reference to my Master Page on my Web Page. In the Click Event after I have made changes to the Database, I call the function on the master page that Creates all the data and places them in the place holders. It Runs, but nothing changes on my page.Am I going about this wrong? Is there another way of doing this? I terrible work around, would be to just reload the whole page after I do an update.

C# - Changing Page Contents On Postback?

Aug 9, 2010

I have a survey, where you have to click through several pages with questions. I use a "Next" and a "Previous" button for doing this. I use a session for keeping tabs on my position. However, this is a problem.

I use the button_click event to increment the page counter, but since this fires after the page_load event, nothing happens on the first click, and for every click thereafter everything is one page behind because the questions are rendered before the counter is incremented.

Is there any way to solve this without using the query-string?

Comment response 10:15:

My understanding is that the following happens:

The first page loads and the counter is not set. The counter is set to 1. The first page is displayed. The user clicks the "Next" button, firing a postback. The page loads, displaying the same set of questions, because the counter is still on 1. The buttons Click-event is run, incrementing the counter. However, the page is still displaying the old questions.

After this everything is one page behind because the questions are rendered before the click-event is fired, incrementing the page counter.

C# - Changing Postback URL To Hide Default.aspx?

Jan 14, 2010

I am attempting to hide the document name from the user by using a folder with appending querystring in the following format:

http://localhost:53779/s/?x=FF2F60195B21487FA19A8EE7767A206C

When I post back the page, it directs it to the physical page:

http://localhost:53779/s/default.aspx?x=FF2F60195B21487FA19A8EE7767A206C

It it possible to motify the postback address so I can omit the default.aspx from the client browser?

C# - Changing Dropdownlist Selection Causes Full Postback?

May 6, 2010

I have a search page with a TextBox that allows someone to type in a search term and press enter. (Which fires TextChanged). I have a DropDownList that specifies the kind of search that will be performed. It is defined in the markup as follows:

<asp:DropDownList ID="lstSearchType" runat="server" AutoPostBack="false">
<asp:ListItem Value="0">Last, First</asp:ListItem>
<asp:ListItem Value="1">Last</asp:ListItem>
<asp:ListItem Value="2">First</asp:ListItem>
<asp:ListItem Value="3">Liberty ID</asp:ListItem>
<asp:ListItem Value="4">E-mail</asp:ListItem>
<asp:ListItem Value="5">Telephone</asp:ListItem>
<asp:ListItem Value="6">Birthday (exact m/d/yyyy)</asp:ListItem>
<asp:ListItem Value="7">SSN (exact ###-##-####)</asp:ListItem>
<asp:ListItem Value="8">Address</asp:ListItem>
</asp:DropDownList>

As you can see, AutoPostBack is set to false, and there is no event hookup.

Pressing enter fires the OnTextChanged event for the TextBox, which performs a search and updates a GridView in an UpdatePanel. This UpdatePanel has its UpdateMode set to conditional and has one trigger: the TextChanged event of the search TextBox.

It's very simple.

And it works beautifully, almost.

Whenever I change the search type, the very next search does a full postback. All subsequent searches do partial postbacks (as desired) unless I change the search type again.

There is one exception to this rule: if I load the page and immediately change the search type, it doesn't do a full postback. So the first change of the DropDownList before any postback (full or partial) does not trigger a full postback.

Full Disclosure: I'm doing a lot of JavaScript to change the appearance of the gridview during async requests. I don't detail it here because it seems unrelated. This problem only occurs when a DropDownList with no JavaScript wired up is changed.

Dropdownlist Selection Changing - Whole Page Doesn't Postback

Aug 6, 2013

I have two dropdownlists on my page that are related to one another, and are built dynamically. I did not write the original code, but I believe it is using AJAX so the whole page doesn't postback when the ddl selection changes. The first ddl is Status and the second is ContractType. Here is the code for the event handler:

Code:
protected void Status_SelectedIndexChanged(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
try
{
DropDownList status = (DropDownList)sender;
string selectedStatusId = status.SelectedItem.Value;

[Code] ....

Here is some of my debugging info:

? view.Count
4
? view.Table.Rows.Count
20
? contractTypeDropDown.SelectedValue

[Code] .....

I commented out the event handler since this snapshot, just to see what would happen, but when I was hitting it you can see what ex.Message was. I don't understand why it says the SelectedValue is invalid when I see the selected value is "E " and that is one of the four items in the ddl.

SessionID Randomly Changes On Postbacks?

Feb 3, 2011

Our solution is built on ASP.NET v1.1 framework. User is presented with login form, so upon providing credentials this information is posted back to the server. Upon postback SessionID changes and our application crashes as some information which is required for processing is stored in the cache and is identified by SessionID string as a part of the name.

This SessionID change happens absolutely randomly and only to some of the clients. Most of the time browser used to view the page and post info is IE8. I cannot reproduce this issue in our test environment, as SessionID is persistent though-out the whole testing process.

I've already checked all solutions, i.e.

Session cache is used on Page_Load to retrieve/store some information, so it's initialized and contains data stored. I've made a Health Monitoring check on Application_End event to capture any possible AppDomain crashes using Reflection and Diagnostics Libraries and retrieving ShutDownMessage from httpruntime object, but that's also not a case. Cookieless attribute of the sessionState in web.config is set to false (using URL to store SessionID is not an option) All MS security and bug fixes are installed on the server. IIS Server settings are similar to the ones we use in Test Environment.

Session.SessionID Changes Between Requests?

May 20, 2010

Why does the property SessionID on the Session-object in an ASP.NET-page change between requests?

I have a page like this:

...
<div>
SessionID: <%= SessionID %>
</div>
...

And the output keeps changing every time I hit F5, independent of browser.

I've seen this work correctly in other projects.

State Management :: How To Check SessionID

Jun 28, 2010

I have an ASP.NET page that has a wizard control. I need to see if the same user is working on the page so I first time I insert a record and next time I update database records. I am using Session.SessionID to check if the same user is working on the page, but on every postback, SessionID gives a unique string and always the "insert" construct executes.

What is the best way to check the same user is working back and forth on the same page. User is not logged in, its an open form on the page.

State Management :: Create A New SessionID?

I've found the way to do it when the user logoff, simply doing:

But I don't know how to do it when the session has expired. Apparently, if the session has expired and the browser tries again to connect, the same SessionID will be recycled, and I want the server issues a new one, how can I do it?
