Web Forms :: WebClient Illegal Characters In Path?

Jul 2, 2010

I am trying to use a WebClient to get the content of another webform in my project. I am using a WebClient because I want to do this asynchronously, so if there is a better way to do that, I am open to it.My webclient, however, is erroring with the "Illegal characters in path" error. Looking at it in the debugger, I see that this is the URI string I am using:

"PortfolioDetail.aspx?CCSG=True&Open=False&Plcmt=2008-Aug "

I don't see any illegal characters in it... what am I doing wrong?

MVC :: Custom Error Page For Illegal Characters In The URL?

Feb 28, 2011

I have a MVC application which is called by entering httphandler in the URL. for example my url is likeexaple.com/client.site/__.ashxNow when i enter illegal characers some thing like this: exaple.com/client.site/_||_.ashx . It is throwing an error saying illegal characters in the URL. I tried to handle it in web.config but of no use.So i added global.asax, by redirecting it to some htm file. It works perfect. But when i enter the illega character like this: example.com/client.s||ite/__.ashxIt is showing the error page. How can I handle this. I tried with custom error page at IIS,but of no use.My requirement is to display custom erro page when some illegal character is entered in the URL.

C# WebClient.DownloadString() Returns String With Perculiar Characters?

Jan 17, 2011

I have an issue with some content that we are downloading from the web for a screen scraping tool that I am building.in the code below, the string returned from the web client download string method returns some odd characters for the source download for a few (not all) web sites.I have recently added http headers as below. Previously the same code was called without the headers to the same effect. I have not tried variations on the 'Accept-Charset' header, I don't know much about text encoding other than the basics.The charachters, or character sequences that I refer to are:

""
and
"Â"

These characters are not seen when you use "view source" in a web browser. What could be causing this and how can I rectify the problem?

string urlData = String.Empty;
WebClient wc = new WebClient();
// Add headers to impersonate a web browser. Some web sites
// will not respond correctly without these headers
wc.Headers.Add("User-Agent", "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.2.12) Gecko/20101026 Firefox/3.6.12");
wc.Headers.Add("Accept", "*/*");
wc.Headers.Add("Accept-Language", "en-gb,en;q=0.5");
wc.Headers.Add("Accept-Charset", "ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7");
urlData = wc.DownloadString(uri);

Web Forms :: 4.0 WebForms Routing And Path Characters?

Apr 14, 2010

I'm going through my apps and carving out as many querystring URLs as possible by using Routing instead.For our product catalog,we have many product categories that have characters like ampersands and slashes in them which don't go over to well when used in a URL.

I'm currently using Page.GetRouteUrl in my databound objects to create URLs like "~/catalog/My Category", which gets encoded to "~/catalog/My%20Category", so I used string.replace to smooth that into "~/catalog/My_Category".

But then, as mentioned, I have categories with commas, ampersands, slashes, quotes, &c.,

My question: is there a general way to easily deal with these characters in route keys, or do I need to develop a list of URL-friendly characters to use and replace all of the ugly ones, then un-replace them when I'm passing the route data to my LINQ statements?If that's so, then I can't use <asp:RouteParameter /> in declarative markup.

URL Encoding - Illegal Character Replacement?

Dec 24, 2010

I am doing some url redirections in a project that I am currently working on. I am new to web development and was wondering what the best practise was to remove any illegal path characters, such as ' ? etc.I'm hoping I don't have to resort to manually replacing each character with their encoded urls.I have tried UrlEncode and HTMLEncode, but UrlEncode doesn't cater for the ? and HTMLEncode doesn't cater for 'E.G. If I was to use the following:

Dim name As String = "Dave's gone, why?"
Dim url As String = String.Format("~/books/{0}/{1}/default.aspx", bookID, name)
Response.Redirect(url)

I've tried wrapping url like this:Dim encodedUrl As String = Server.UrlEncode(url)AndDim encodedUrl As String = Server.HTMLEncode(url)
