Before using any class in your website project/page we have to add it's assembly reference to our project. Right?
Now, when I am using SmtpClient class from System.Net assembly after adding the System.Net.Mail namespace in namespace node of application's web.config file but without adding assembly reference to the project it still accepting and running the code. Why?
I enquired the machine's web.config file located at C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727CONFIG but didnt find any assembly reference for System.Net.
how it is working and where the assembly reference has been added and how?

1. Is there a reason why someone would want to add a reference to an assembly (e.g. System.Drawing) but not add the Using statement? Seems that if you add a reference, you should add the Using statement automatically, but maybe not always?
2. Correct me if I'm wrong, the only benefit of adding a "Using" statement at the top of your file, is to bring into scope an assembly and not have to fully type the class name? So if I have a Using System.Drawing, I can type in
string = Color.Tomato.ToString(); instead of string = System.Drawing.Color.Tomato.ToString();

I have to fullfill a requirement where my activeX control (developed in c#) need to invoke a callback JavaScript function asynchronously (or) synchronously (or) in both ways. I can handle the context using threads. JavaScript:
function handler_1(){ ..... }
myActiveXObject.registerCallBack(handler_1);
Where in ActiveX control, I need a function "registerCallBack" to accept the argument. But I have no clue how to invoke that registered JavaScript function from my ActiveX control. By digging MSDN forum, I found something as script.GetType().InvokeMember("myJSFunctionName", BindingFlags.Instance | BindingFlags.InvokeMethod | BindingFlags.Public, null, script, null);
the above line throwing me an exception Unknown Name etc. I do have the definition for "myJSFunctionName" in javascript and I got the script object from the document object.

I'm currently trying to work out the best way to build this web application, which will then be intergrated on other systems, such as WinForms, Intranets etc.
We hope to include the usual layers i.e. DAL, BLL, BOL and UI but I have been experimenting with Entity Framework 4 and WCF Data Services and managed to get something in place where I was using WCF as a gateway to EF4.
i.e. Adding a Service Reference to my project and then using the EF4 context and writing LINQ queries against the DB
e.g.[Code]....
Now with the current setup I would still need to write a DAL Class Library, that interacts with the Data Service, because as I said WCF Data Services only seems to be a gateway, I can't see where to put the code (above) in the Data Service and then how I could these methods.
My questions are: 1. How do I develop a WCF Data Service in such a way to allow this behaviour - I know how I could do it using ASMX web service, something like [Code]....
2. If I am to use WCF Data Services, how is serialization handled (if at all) - again I know how to do something in ASMX web services
3. Again, If I am to use WCF, how do I add Security and only allow my applications to access the web service - for obvious reasons
4. Would it be possible / logical to also include the Business Logic Layer into the web service?

I am using an update panel in my application. Inside the update panel i am trying to trigger a html button, which in turn should invoke a server side function after which i need to invoke a client side function.But the client side function is getting invoked first where as the server side function is not getting invoked at all.
Here is my code
<asp:UpdatePanel ID="embedcodepanel" runat="server" UpdateMode="Conditional">
<Triggers>
<asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="btnembedurl" EventName="onclick"/>
</Triggers>
<ContentTemplate>
<label id="lbl_embedcode" class="hide">Site Embed Code:</label>

When you use ASP.NET web site (instead of web application model) and add reference to an assembly from local folder, Visual Studio, it seems, understands that this local assembly is also in GAC and so does NOT copy this assembly to bin folder (as it does with non-GAC assemblies), but simply adds new record in web.config file.
Why such a behaviour? Is it possible to force copy to bin folder (I need this since .dll is not on target environment)? I can add assembly to bin folder as file and it will work, but in this case bin folder contents will be in source control, which is not good.

I have an application that I use to run Exchange Powershell commands inside C# code like below. This is an example of the relevant lines I use to run the powershell command.
RunspaceConfiguration rsConfig = RunspaceConfiguration.Create();
PSSnapInException snapInException = null;
//load Exchange shell
rsConfig.AddPSSnapIn("Microsoft.Exchange.Management.PowerShell.E2010", out snapInException);
Runspace runSpace = RunspaceFactory.CreateRunspace(rsConfig);
//open runspace
runSpace.Open();
//setup pipeline
Pipeline pipeLine = runSpace.CreatePipeline();
String sScript = "get-mailbox -identity 'rj'";
//add script to pipeline
pipeLine.Commands.AddScript(sScript);
//run the script
pipeLine.Invoke();
pipeLine.Dispose();
This code works perfect in all cases until now. the script I am trying to run instead of the one above is to set the RetentionPolicy for a mailbox. The script I am trying to run looks like this: Set-Mailbox -Identity 'rj' -RetentionPolicy 'Main Campus Retention Policy' When I run this in powershell itself it works perfectly but when I try to run it using the code below I get the error, "Cannot invoke this function because the current host does not implement it."
From this error, it almost seems like the command that runs in C# cannot run the RetentionPolicy command but that doesn't make much sense. I have Googled this and tried everything suggested but no luck.

For WPF, there's the Microsoft Patterns & Practices's Prism project.
Prism provides guidance designed to you more easily design and build rich, flexible, and easy-to-maintain
Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) desktop applications, Silverlight Rich Internet Applications (RIAs), and Windows Phone 7 applications I was wondering whether a similar project (reference implementation) intended for software developers building WCF applications exists.
In our main internal project (a .Net WinForms rich client app), we don't talk directly with the database but instead fetch and update data with ASP.Net web-services that we also control. Our current setup is giving us some bottlenecks. For a new smallish project, we want to try WCF. Objective question: Where do I find a not-too-basic WCF reference project?

I have created a VB DLL by selecting File - New - Project and then Class Library
I added a "Properties" region and a "Function" region with some simple properties and one simple function. Compiled it and used it in another app with no errors.
At that point the only references in the project were the default references when creating the new project.
I then created a function that will take a file as a param and get the physical path and add the 2 together. In the function I use the "Request.PhysicalPath" method of the System.Web.UI.UserControl.
I then added areference to the System.Web DLL in my project.
PROBLEM IS I get an error on "Request" that says "Name Request is not declared"
So I googled the error which I found a thread that said to "just use HttpContext.Current.Request.Form" because "by default all websites developed in Visual Studio 2005 is Inherited from System.Web.UI.Page and Class files won't that's the resion we have to add System.Web.UI.Page namespace in the class file"
However when I added the "HttpContext.Current.form." before my "Request.PhysicalPath" I get the same error on "HttpContext".
What Am I doing wrong?

I'm new to .net
I've following line in my code:
using Microsoft.ServiceModel.Web;
And it works fine as long as I add the namespace reference to microsoft assembly dLL System.ServiceModel.
The moment I copy the code on other machine, I need to redo everything. Is there any way so that I don't need to add this reference again & again?

In my current project, I have a webservice file called MyServices.asmx. This webservice I want to reference in my Default.aspx.cs file.
My Code:
MyServices newService = new MyServices();
newService.addUser(txFirstName.Text, txLastName.Text, txtEmail.Text,
txtUserName.Text, txtPassword.Text, txtBalance.Text);
But when I refer to that webservice (as shown below), I get error saying: "The type or namespace name 'MyServices' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)"
What should I do to correct this error?
Current Solution of Adding Service Reference still gives me that error.

I have two projects in my solution: MyApp.Domain and MyApp.WebService. MyApp.WebService is a WCF service library. I want to use some utility functions from MyApp.Domain. So in MyApp.WebService, I added a reference to MyApp.Domain. Intellisense picked it up just fine, it recognized the function I need to call. But when I build the solution, I get this error:
The type or namespace name 'Domain' does not exist in the namespace 'MyApp' (are you missing an assembly reference?) at using MyApp.Domain.Utility;
What's going wrong here?

I'm working on an internet application that has been set up as a web SITE project (I know...) in Visual Studio. I need to add additional features/functionality so have added a class library to the project and referred to it in the main web site project.
The issue now arises because I need to make use of core objects which live inside the App_Code directory in the web site project but this project doesn't appear to expose its DLL like web app/ code library projects do. Because of this I can't add a reference to the web site project in the class library to leverage the common site-wide code/objects.
I can't move the stuff out of App_Code so I'm looking for a way to refer to the website project dll from the new class library.

My urls when I run the asp.net website project (in vs.net 2008) looks like:
http://localhost:54269/www/Default.aspx
So referencing things like:
/sytle/css.css
Doesn't seem to work.
Why does my project have a '/www' folder? Did I set things up wrong?

I have some pages that reference javascript files.
The application exists locally in a Virtual Directory, i.e. http://localhost/MyVirtualDirectory/MyPage.aspx
so locally I reference the files as follows:
<script src="/MyVirtualDirectory/Scripts/MyScript.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
The production setup is different though. The application exists as its own web site in production, so I don't need to include the reference to the virtual directory. The problem with this is that I need to modify every file that contains a javascript reference so it looks like the following:
<script src="../Scripts/MyScript.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
I've tried referencing the files this way in my local setup but it doesn't work.

I'm trying to call a Page Method using a jQuery 'attached' event function, in which I like to use the closure to keep the event target local, as below, but page method calls declare several 'error' functions, and I would like to use one function for all of them. If, in the below code, I was handling an error and not success, how could I use my single, anonymous handler for all 3 error functions?
$(":button").click(function () {
var button = this;
PageMethods.DoIt(
function (a, b, c) {
alert(button);
});
});
This example passes an anonymous function for the success callback. There is only one of these. If I was passing an error callback, how could I use 'function (e, c, t)' for all 3 error callbacks?
ADDED: What I would like to do here is trigger an AJAX call whenever the user clicks a toggle button (checkbox), but to improve responsiveness, I want to toggle the button state immediately, and only 'untoggle' it if the AJAX call fails.
Now, in my client-side click() event handler, I would like to use anonymous functions inside the scope of click()' so that the functions have access to thethisevent argument, but I don't want to 'declare' three functions for theonTimeout,onError, and 'onAbort arguments of the PageMethods.MyFunction function. if I declare a named function outside of the click handler, it no longer has access to the 'this' parameter of the click() event handler.

I need to be able to add a reference to ADODB in my code to access that particular COM object's result.
I have tried to add the adodb reference from the properties page of my site, but whenever I try to run the site after adding it I get this:
[code]....
To enable assembly bind failure logging, set the registry value [HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftFusion!EnableLog] (DWORD) to 1.
Note: There is some performance penalty associated with assembly bind failure logging.
To turn this feature off, remove the registry value [HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftFusion!EnableLog].
Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.3603; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.3082
END MESSAGE
Why would this be? I've not encountered this before when adding the adodb reference. The source of the adodb reference is:
c:Program FilesMicrosoft.NETPrimary Interop Assembliesadodb.dll
The file is indeed in that directory.

We have a web site that sits on a DotNetNuke platform and all of our coded modules are written in VB.Net for consistency. However, we have been sent a web page that works as a link and it is written in C# and references a cs file in its App_Code folder. If we try and load this into our website we get an error saying that it is not written in VB we then tried converting the homepage to VB but the reference folder is very complex and written in C#. Can we load the reference file even though it is C# and reference it using VB code. The current all is OurRemService RemService = New OurRemService(); where OurRemService is a file in the App_Code folder in the web page folder. The only other way around this is for us to set it up in IIS as a virtual directory and reference it directly but we would prefer to integrate it into our website.

I have a number of .Net web sites built in VS2010 using Framework 4.0that reference a web service to send emails.
My most recent site I created as a web application as opposed to a web site. In the Solution Explorer you can add a 'Service Reference' and, if you click the Advanced button you can then add a reference to a web service.
I did that and now the (web application) site won't build - it says it cannot load the Ajax dll. If I remove the reference to the web service, the site builds okay - if I add the reference back in, the site will not build.
Do I need to abandon the idea of using a 'Web Application' and turn it into a 'Web Site'?
