When I am working on projects I like to take my files back and forth between two machines. The machine at my office is running Windows XP Pro 32-bit.My home pc is brand new and running Windows 7 64-bit.I have not yet installed Visual Studio 2008 on the new home pc.My projects usually consist of a web site in ASP.net and C# often with a SQL Server 2008 Express Edition database backend.I am using Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition (yes, I know I need to upgrade soon).
Before I received the new computer I was simply copying what I did at one machine onto a USB drive, taking it the other machine and overwriting the files that were previously there. Is it feasible to continue moving project files back and forth between computers now that one machine is running a 32-bit OS and one is running a 64-bit OS?

I developed a test application using VS 2008 (ver: 9.0.30729.1. sp) and .net work (ver:3.5 sp1) using master pages, style sheets, ajax extenders etc.
I moved the whole website to another machine running VS Team System 2008 (windows xp) with the same above versions. The functionality of the application works fine, but the stylesheet seems to be affected. I have centered the whole application (fixed 960px). But when I ran the same app in new machine running windows xp the content area is getting floated or left justified. Is there anything that I need to take care when I move from one os to the other. What is causing this behavior? I tested using IE 8.

I have a website project in VS 2005 using VB. From it I connect to a web service that sends an email. This was running just fine until my department moved locations (and along with it the server hosting the service). Now my project can't connect to the service. I deleted and added the web reference again and VS found it and it's methods just fine. I can browse to the service in my browser successfully.
The emails are no longer getting sent and there is no error raised. I tried debugging and when I step into the call to the service then I get the error "Unable to automatically step into the server. Connecting to the server machine '[mywebservice]' failed. ...". I do not need to debug that service; I was only confirming that the project wasn't connecting.
When the project is loaded onto our virtual server for testing it runs as expected.
How can I get my project to connect to the web service from my localhost as it was before the machine was moved?

We currently have two web servers that are load balancing a website. Each server at the moment has its own copy of the site on their own hard drives. We have recently installed a SAN thats accessible by both servers so what I would like to do is move the website files on to the SAN for easy management of upgrades to the site. What steps should I take to ensure this works correctly with IIS7 and the web.config files and possibily machine.config files. For additional information the web.config's on each server is currently encrypted, how would I be able to achieve this with a SAN?

I'm having trouble with an app that runs on IIS 6, but not IIS 7.5 (as outlined in this question: IIS 7.5 Can't open Handler Mappings?)
I think it might solve the problem if I could run IIS 6 on my machine as well as 7.5. Can this be done? Will it cause any problems if I do this?

I have some static (pure html) pages in my MVC application that I need to authenticate, so that not just anybody can look at them. Is there an way to do this without moving all the code to asp files and adding a controller and from there use the Authorize attribute? I would really prefer to not need to do this!

One customer set up an IIS 7 on a Windows 2008 machine. Forms Authentication works fine on my local IIS 6.0 and also on a shared server I used for testing. On the new machine there is no way no access the password protected area despite a succesful login.
Is there any settings I should ask my customer to check out on the server ? Or is there something different for IIS 7 I should see in my web.config ?

I'm trying to get an asp.net application up on IIS on a Windows Server 2008 machine. I can hit the app from localhost, no problem. But I can't access the app using the server's domain name either locally or from another machine on the network. But here's the odd part. I can access a normal file on IIS using the domain name, both from a browser running on the server and from a browser running on another machine on the network. Here's a synopsis ("http" converted to "htp" below because I don't have enough points to have all these links in my message):
From IE on the server itself:
works htp://localhost/foo.htm
works htp://localhost/App
works htp://test.foo.com/foo.htm
dead htp://test.foo.com/App
From IE on another machine:
works htp://test.foo.com/foo.htm
dead htp://test.foo.com/App

I have a asp.net web app and a windows service running on separate machines. How can i enable the windows service subscribe/listen to events raised by the asp.net app on the remote machine? What methods can i use?n example of events that can be raised on the asp.net app is a user uploading a file. Once the upload has completed the windows service should be notified so it can do some work. It seems that there needs to be a layer in between asp.net and windows service, possibly another windows service or WCF app? Or plain old polling through a shared database containing the state?

In my ASP.NET application, I need to be able to authenticate/authorise against local Windows users/groups (ie. not Active Directory) on a different machine, as well as be able to change the passwords of said remote local Windows accounts.
Yes, I know Active Directory is built for this sort of thing, but unfortunately the higher ups have decreed it needs to be done this way (so authentication against users in a database is out as well).
I've tried using DirectoryEntry and WinNT like so:
DirectoryEntry user = new DirectoryEntry(String.Format("WinNT://{0}/{1},User",
serverName, username), username, password, AuthenticationTypes.Secure)
but this results in an exception when you try to log in more than one user:
Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again.
I've tried making sure my DirectoryEntries are used inside a using block, so they're disposed properly, but this doesn't seem to fix the issue. Plus, even if that did work it is possible that two users could hit that line of code concurrently and therefore try to create multiple connections, so it would be fragile anyway.
Is there a better way to authenticate against local Windows accounts on a remote machine, authorise against their groups, and change their passwords?

I have just ported my VS2008 development environment to a new computer running Windows 7. One roadblock I'm having is that when I edit machine.config in VS2008, I cannot save it back to its location - I get an error saying Access Denied. I am logged in as Administrator and have tried to set myself up as owner but the crazy security rules in Windows 7 are frustrating this operation. (I could do this on my previous system - VS2008 running XP.) I set the Administrators permissions to Full Control and made this file's owner Administrators (vs the previous SYSTEM)
