Web Forms :: Perform Time-consuming Task On Server?
Oct 28, 2010
I have a function which performs a series of time-consuming operations which include querying a large database, customising an excel file and sending an email with a 5MB attachment.
I would like to excute this function in the background, when a button is clicked, and immediately redirect the user to another aspx page. The user should be free to browse to other pages or even close the browser when the background operation is still running on the server. I have tried to implement threading but could not get it to work. The email with attachment does not get sent even though there are no errors.

I am writing a program to crawl the websites. The crawl function is a recursive one and may consume more time to complete, So I used Multi Threading to perform the crawl for multiple websites. What exactly I need is, after completion crawling one website it call next one (which should be in Queqe) instead multiple websites crawling at a time.I am using C# and ASP.NET.

I have an ASP.NET application running on multiple IIS6 web servers, with a SQL Server 2005 database back-end.
I need to:
monitor the database for the completion of an external job event, and then have exactly one web application instance submit some information to a web service For (1) it seems like a SqlDependency would be the best approach (or just plain old polling). Each web application instance would register such a dependency when it starts up. (I don't want to configure a 'master' instance because the failure of that instance would mean the task doesn't proceed, even if other instances are available. Thus my design is to ensure that if there is an instance available to do the work, then the work ought to proceed.)
For (2) I have been thinking of having some sort of flag in the database that the web application instances try to update once they receive the SqlDependency notification in (1), along the following line (greatly simplified):
UPDATE StatusTable SET TaskStatus = 1 WHERE TaskStatus = 0
SELECT @@ROWCOUNT
that only one application instance would have been able to update the TaskStatus, and thus only one instance would have a @@ROWCOUNT > 0. This would then be the instance 'elected' to submit the information to the web service.

I need reliable way to run 10 different tasks simultaneously. For instance the first one would be sending emails, while the next one is cleaning rows from a specific table... so on an so forth.
I've used the Thread class and while it works well on my development machine (VS2010 internal web server) non of these threads seems to be working at all on my production server. And I don't know of an effective way to debug the problem on the production server.
I saw this technique which encourage you to register cache objects. Since the application fires a callback when a cached item expires, then it's possible to run any code to mimic threading behavior. It seems a little Micky Mouse like.

I have a aspx page in which i create reports and charts on the fly. Creation of these charts and reports takes a lot of time because of which a blank screen is shown to the user until the creation completes.
can unlink actual report and chart creation code from page load so that i can show a processing text and then show the generated chart or report once it is ready.
EDIT :-
I would want to do something like this -
on first request trigger the report or chart creation and register a call back for completion. the client can then poll the server every 2-3 seconds to check if the report creaetion is complete.

My web application currently requires users to upload files, after which I take it for "further processing". This processing is VERY time consuming and can take a while before the control gets back to the user. I would like to run this in the background and not have the user wait until this completes.
I know this question has been asked in this very forum before but I'm not able to understand or I'm not able to proceed in the right direction. My understanding is there are a few ways I can go about this
a) create a BackgroundWorker process in my Global.asax file that will spawn a process and take care of the activity.
b) create a web service that will do the processing for me .. (how?)
c) Use Ajax (Again how?)

I'm trying to create custom control which displays real-time state (progress bar, or percent value) during time-consuming task (no animated GIF, or static text message).
This scenarion can't be done with standard UpdateProgress control, because it displays only static progress information.
This custom control can be then used as follows:
Aspx page should contain this custom progress control and a button.When user clicks button, page executes postback to the server.Server in button click handler starts performing some time-consuming task. Client installs timer with interval is set to 2000 ms.In client timer event handler should be request to the server for progress refresh.If server receives request from progress control, it checks actual task progress state, and performs client control refresh.When server terminates executing the task, it hides progress control on the client.
How can be this scenarion accomplished? How can I create such custom control?

I have worked on many localized sites in the past, using mainy some standard patterns and techniques involving Global/Local RESX files as well as session to maintain currently selected language.
However, it is quite difficult to maintain from a translator point of view, we used a small tool that converts RESX to Excel and then the localized Excel back to RESX, but for some reason this technique doesnt work properly anymore...
better and more reliable tools (paid or free) that can be used to localize RESX and provide translation team a better/easier way to localize content?

This is my aspx pages button properties:
<asp:Button runat="server" ID="cmdConfirm" Text="Select
Customer"
ValidationGroup="ValidateId" Height="26px" onclick="cmdSave_Click"/
Now on my Page_Load I have:
protected void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs
e)
{
Name = Request.QueryString[0];
LoadCustomer();
cmdConfirm.Attributes.Add("onClick", "update("
+ Name + ");");
Conn.Close();
}
This is my button click for Select Customer button.
protected void cmdSave_Click(object sender, EventArgs
e)
{
RecordChanges();
}
Now I must run cmdSave_Click() before the cmdConfirm.Attributes.Add even though both is for same button anyway. I know that client side script will try to run first but I must run the cmdSave_Click event first to save the data. Aftre that cmdConfirm.Attributes will send the Name to the next page using a Javascript function where the stored values(stored using cmdSave_Click) will be used. I have no other choice. I cannot run the Javascript function first as it will happen before the data is stored. And also I cannot use another page as all has to be performed in one page so that user will not have to click Save twice. Can anyone tell me How I can delay the cmdConfirm.Attributes.Add until the cmdSave_Click is performed.

I have a webform which uses a gridview control to show result of a search operation.I wanna to take advantage of using pagination in the webform. But as you all know, gridview pagination is a client-side pagination and it transfers all records have been selected to the client. What I mean by client-side pagination is the client (page) shows records page by page but every time the user clicks on a page link to navigate through records, all the records are selected from Data Source.How can I use gridView with datapager in order to have a server side pagination? Or any other solution to get records page by page by configuring our query?

I have created an web based application through which the users can change the server (where the web application is hosted) IPAddress.The problem is that, once i have changed the IPAddress to a new IPAddress, Response.Redirect("MyHome.aspx") is not working any more. I have also tried to redirect the user to the newly updated address but even it doesn't do the trick. No page found message appears after some time.For example: The url while the web application runs in IIS is : http://192.168.0.65/WebDemo/Default.aspx after changing the IPAddress to 192.168.0.66 and redirecting it with the Response.Redirect() method the http://192.168.0.65 is not accessible.Any idea of achieving this task of changing IPAddress of the server and doing an automatic redirect to the newly assigned IPAddress,
