Web Forms :: Why Doesn't Validation Control Stop Application
Oct 22, 2010
I use a validation control to check if value entered is numeric. When I type letter in the textbox, the error messages shows for a second, then the application continues, and eventually throw exception.
I'm going to add server side validation in code behind. But I wonder why the validation control doesn't stop the application. I don't see any difference between this web form and other web forms where validation controls work fine.

I've written a custom ASP.net control that descends from LinkButton and overrides the Render() method. I'm using it to replace ImageButtons in the site I'm working on so we don't have to have an image for each button. This control works fine, does the required post-backs etc., however it doesn't fire the validators in its validation group. This is obviously an issue. The code for the control is (condensed) as follows:
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Web;
using System.Web.UI;
using System.Web.UI.WebControls;
public class CustomButton : LinkButton
{
public string SpanCssClass { get; set; }
protected override void Render(HtmlTextWriter writer)
{
if (!Visible)
{
return;
}
writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Name, UniqueID);
writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Id, ClientID);
writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Class, CssClass);
string postback = string.IsNullOrEmpty(OnClientClick) ? "javascript:__doPostBack('" + UniqueID + "','');" : OnClientClick;
writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Href, postback);
writer.RenderBeginTag(HtmlTextWriterTag.A);
writer.AddAttribute(HtmlTextWriterAttribute.Class, SpanCssClass);
writer.RenderBeginTag(HtmlTextWriterTag.Span);
writer.Write(Text);
writer.RenderEndTag();
writer.RenderEndTag();
}
}
Does anyone know why this would not be causing the validators to fire? I was under the impression that leaving all the other methods in LinkButton un-overridden would leave all the other functionality the same.

I have a JQuery select component and a javascript function to handle the stop event:
[code]....
The script works fine in firefox and chrome but not in IE7/8. It is normally supposed to send a string to the openid_identifier textbox once the google or yahoo select box is clicked.

I'm going to check the database schema at Application_Start event handle in the Global.asax file. If something wrong, I hope to stop the application instead of just catch an exception.

I have an ObjectDataSource that is bound to a GridView. The object accepts a parameter from a TextBox. The problem I have is when I use a CustomerValidator with a ServerValidate event, the ObjectDataSource would still attempt to perform a DataBind despite the fact the the customer validator has returned false. The following is the code in the ASPX page.
<asp:TextBox ID="sittingDate" runat="server" />
<asp:CustomValidator ID="DateValidator" runat="server" ControlToValidate="sittingDate" OnServerValidate="DateValidator_ServerValidate" />
<asp:ObjectDataSource ID="BatchDataSource" runat="server" OldValuesParameterFormatString="original_{0}"
SelectMethod="GetOrCreateSittingBatch" TypeName="BatchBLL" OnSelected="BatchDataSource_Selected" OnSelecting="BatchDataSource_Selecting">
<SelectParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="sittingDate" Name="batchDate" PropertyName="Text"
Type="DateTime" />
</SelectParameters>
</asp:ObjectDataSource>
<asp:GridView ID="BatchGridView" runat="server" DataSourceID="BatchDataSource">
In the Custom Validator I have
protected void DateValidator_ServerValidate(object source, ServerValidateEventArgs args)
{
/Ensure that the entered data is a date.
string input = args.Value;
DateTime result;
args.IsValid = DateTime.TryParse(input.TrimEnd(), out result);
}
How do I stop the ObjectDataSource from data binding when validation has failed?

I am using Ajax Validator call out extender to validate a web form. The error messages are displayed as expected. But I am able to save the form with data that should not have been entered. For ex: for a number field, I type in "sdsd" and the ajax control displays a pop up displaying the error message "Numbers only allowed"..
but at the same time, I can click on the submit button with the text in the number field... at which time, the web page displays error as I am trying to insert a text in a data type int field. I either have to clear the field on pop up error display or not let the user click submit when ajax validator is active. whats the best way?

I want the validation condition to be: on a pair of textboxes, to be valid as long as at least one of them isn't empty.
So I put a customvalidator on the 2nd textbox, hooked up to the following server code and client code:
<script type="text/javascript">
function ECPhoneOrEmailRequired(source, args) {
var ecPhone = document.getElementById("txtEmergencyPhone");
var ecEmail = document.getElementById("txtEmergencyEmail");
if (ecPhone.value.length < 1 && ecEmail.value.length < 1) {
args.IsValid = false;
}
else {
args.IsValid = true
}
}
</script>
Protected Sub CustomValidator1_ServerValidate(ByVal source As Object, ByVal args As System.Web.UI.WebControls.ServerValidateEventArgs)
'args.IsValid
If (txtEmergencyPhone.Text = String.Empty And txtEmergencyEmail.Text = String.Empty) Then
args.IsValid = False
Else
args.IsValid = True
End If
End Sub
From what I can tell thru breakpoints, this code works fine as long as there's something in one of the two textboxes. When both textboxes are empty, the code is never called - and so both boxes empty ends up being allowed.
So what's the correct way to validate one-or-the-other-nonempty condition?

I am using Wizard control for password recovery. at first step I am checking the UserName with chkUserName(UserName.Text) function if UserName presents, the function will return the User Id and will navigate to next step, if UserName is wrong the function will return 0 and should not navigate to next step, but should stop at index 0 i.e. at the same step.
I have tried some solutions but it is navigating to next step in both the conditions.

I'm currently developping an application using MVC2 and Globalization (fr and de). I'm creating a form who use DataAnnotation on the model for validation, with localized error messages in my dataAnnotations.
Here is the trick :
I have two <input /> :
One for a required date (example : 12/05/2001) wich is a DateTime field in the model :
[Code]....
One for an optionnal hour (example : 22:30) wich is a DateTime? :
[Code]....
Erreur and LibellesSinistre are my ressources files.
I got two problems :
I can enter a date in my hour field and an hour in my date field.My error messages aren't localized.
Do I need a trick or something to make it work ?

Whenever I stop debugging an ASP.NET IIS web application it seems to take very long before VS2010 becomes responsive again (2 or 3 minutes). This happens when I close Internet Explorer 9 (which stops the debugging session), stop debugging in VS (which closes the browser) or when I detach the debugger from the debugging menu (which leaves the browser open).
My CPU time for devenv.exe goes up to 25% during this period of time. I use the professional edition (no intellitrace). Starting without debugging performs ok when I close the browser. I have some add-ins and extensions installed like TestDriven.NET, Resharper, PowerCommands, Productivity Power Tools, VisualSVN,...

Imagine a Web Forms application with routing.
A clean page name like:
[URL]
Might have an underlying of URL of:
[URL]
If a user enters [URL] into a browser, I need to redirect to [URL]
Is this possible to do?
I can't work out a way to do this as the routing engine is not executed for a physical page and in the page.aspx Page_Load method I have no way of knowing whether the URL was entered directly or was the result of a route.
