Why Might Membership.ValidateUser Return False When The User Is Approved And Is Not Locked Out
Jan 5, 2011
I know this looks similar to other questions here but I don't think my case is the same as theirs.
I have a website that uses the AspNetSqlMembershipProvider to validate users. I would like to use the same database from a console application. According to several articles on the web I can use the System.Web.Security.Membership class from outside ASP.NET by copying the appropriate sections from web.config to app.config. That is what I did.
My console appliction can get the user with the requested name and I can confirm that the user is approved and is not locked out but ValidateUser returns false for a correct username and password pair.
I have found articles where people have had trouble with migrating code which may be due to a machine key mismatch but have also found a reference saying that machine key is only used if the passwordFormat property equals encrypted whereas I am using hashed.
Is the issue that the two pieces of code - the website and the console app - are in different assemblies and the assembly name or other property is being used during password hashing? In both cases the application name property is set to /.
Should I continue with this approach or just access the database directly and hash the password myself?

We have just migrated our application from VS 2008 to VS 2010 and our database from Sql server 2005 to 2008. Everything was working great until i tried to login to the site.
As when i try to log into the site, i am surprisingly always getting "FALSE" from Membership.Validateuser (). I goggled it and now i know i am not the alone victim of this irritating bug. Our live site is going to be down...

I have successfully created a SQL Server database that is holding the ASP.NET Membership data for my site. I have also created two textboxes and used them for user authentication after he/she keys in a user name and password. I would now like encrypt the password before comparing to the value stored in the Password field of the SQL Server database. However, I have been unable to do this so far.I have consulted the MSDN page for the embershipProvider.EncryptPassword method but I do not understand how to implement it. I have also tried searching Google for this method but I have only found a couple of examples and I don't understand those either.

I have a webservice project and a web project in the same solution.
The web project implements a membershipprovider.
I want to be able to authenticate user via the webservice project but when i call this method in the webproject:
public static bool AuthUser(string userName, string password)
{
return Membership.ValidateUser(userName, password);
}
I get this inner ex."Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed." Calling the method from the webproject works fine. I understand why I get the ex. but not how to solve it.. UPDATE Well I fixed the issue by deleting the C:UsersJRBAppDataLocalMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server DataSQLEXPRESS folder.. However now the method always returns false.. It almost seems like it doesn't use the proper connectionstring.

user phoned me and said he received an error when attempting to login stating that his account had been locked. I had to unlock the user account today manually through the user interface. Several hours later I had to do it again. Afterwards, when I looked at the aspnet_Membership table it showed NO failed login attempts. LastLockout date for that particular user was set to min date. FailedPasswardAttemptCount was zero. FailedPasswordAttemptWindowStart was min date. I then proceeded to fail logging with the users account name.

I have the following code which simply gets data from a table and populates the questions_lb listbox with items. I have a button on the page, which when clicked, should write (on submit) the selected state of each of the items. The code below writes the text values of each of the items fine however it always writes the li.Selected as False even though i have selected items from the list. Note that you can select Multiple items from the list. Does anyone have a clue why its not writing 'True' for an item that is selected on submit?

I just want to add some client side (JQuery Javascript) validation in a web user control. I put an OnClientClick handler and the function gets called. BUT, even if I return "false", the OnClick method always get fired. What am I doing wrong ?
I'm with VS 2010, targeting the 4.0 framework with JQuery 1.4.2. and JQuery UI 1.8.4.
Here's a sample code :
<td style="text-align:right"><asp:Button ID="btnAddSave" OnClientClick="return ValidateMail();" OnClick="btnAddSave_Click" runat="server" Text="Submit" /></td>[code]...
If I put a breakpoint in the Page_Load event, I see that I get in and the btnAddSave_Click event is also executed.

I am trying to return true or false from popup window to the parent window. Actually the parent window has a button control, which on click popup another window. The popup window holds some emailing data and a button "send". This "send" button onclick send email. Now I want to return true if the email is successfully sent otherwise false, to the parent window. Depending on returning value a label present on parent window displays a text message. But I am not able to implement it. Because it might happen that the popup window is blocked by web-browsers popup blocker or popup window is accidentally closed by user. So how can I confirm to parent window whether or not the email is successfully sent?

after i can copy my file to another folder i realised that if this webapplication is used by multiple users at once, then some users are going to get locked out because each one is trying to copy those files.
so how do i tell the user thats trying to use a file to wait untill the file is available.
StreamWriter WriterTotxt = new StreamWriter("date.txt", false);
DateTime LastAccess = File.GetLastWriteTime("path.dbf");
WriterTotxt.Write(LastAccess);
WriterTotxt.Flush();
WriterTotxt.Close();
string ReadTextFile = File.ReadAllText(txtFile);
DateTime test = Convert.ToDateTime(ReadTextFile);
if (File.GetLastWriteTime(LatestUpdatedTime).CompareTo(test) > 0)
{
File.Copy(Path.Combine(sourcefile, fName), Path.Combine(destinationfile, fName), true);
}

We have a web application with feature for logging in with credientials The important requirement is once the user logs in he is not allowed to login from any other system or even another browser on same system We used following solution which is mssql based : We have kept " Is_Loggedin" as a column with data type "bit" in a table. when a user logs in we set the flag as "1" sowhen someone tries to log again ,the system is showing the error "The user is already logged in"When user logsout bit turns to "0"indicating user logged out. However this logic is failing in following scenarios Problem scenario:When user closes the browser the flag is "1"and user is locked in or situations when user gets system problem and unable to log out.

I have an application with a custom mebership (I'm still working on it). There is some funcionality in the application for asociating users. This means that (if already associated) one user could switch to some other user with just a click.
My question is:
Can I do a function that would allow me to authenticate one user without sending the password as a parameter?
