View 1 RepliesI often have some controls (like TextBoxes) for input parameters at the top of a page followed by a ListView to show the results.
When submit is hit, the LIstView shows the results using ControlParameters in the SqlDataSource.
My problem is when you first navigate to the page, the EmptyDataTemplate is shown. This can confuse users.
What is the Best Practice for not showing the ListView or EmptyDatatemplate until there has been a Submit button press?
My UI layer calls my business layer which populates a DTO. I need to display properties from the DTO on my ASPX page. Should I create public variables on the code behind page for each of the DTO properties and reference like <%=PublicPropertyName%> OR is it ok to set the DTO instance to public and reference the properties directly like <%=dtoInstance.propertyName%>
Additionally, would it be better if I just created Literal and Label controls for every item on the ASPX page and just populate them from the code behind only?
I can access a module from code behind but not from the aspx page in inline VB code <% ... %>.
I know its got to be something simple but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere.
I am to access a method on my master page. I have an error label which I want to update based on error messages I get from my site.
public string ErrorText
{
get { return this.infoLabel.Text; }
set { this.infoLabel.Text = value; }
}
How can I access this from my user control or classes that I set up?
to whom it may concern,
I wish to access a public property in a master page from a nested content page
is there anyway to do that without using "master type"
i found this link
http://www.velocityreviews.com/forums/t110057-accessing-properties-from-nested-master-pages.html
but i dont understand what "companywide" is
((CompanyWide)this.Master.Page.Master).HtmlTitle = "now it is working";
i dont want to use "MasterType" i would rather cast..
I have a folder called <mysite>/Pages. This folder is PUBLICIn this folder I have a aspx page called : MySecure.aspx I have on the default.aspx page a hyperlink to the "~/Pages/MySecure.aspx page".I want to limit access to the MySecure page to only those in a Admin role (so no members no guests or www users can see it. I dont want to move MySecure.aspx into a secure folder.This is what I did in the wedconfig
<location path="Pages/MySecure.aspx">
<system.web>
<authorization>

All the writeups on ListView's EmptyDataTemplate say that it's for displaying the fact that no data records exist, which is logical; but the bad thing is that I've found nothing as a follow-up. In other words, I haven't been able to find any "now what?" once you (as the site user) find that there aren't any data records. I am led to then ask what the real purpose of the EmptyDataTemplate is if you can't do anything with it.
I added a button called "Add Your Photo" on the EmptyDataTemplate, which activates a ModalPopupExtender with an AsyncFileUpload. All this works fine in terms of uploading the file but nothing happens after that. I wonder if I should be starting instead in the InsertItemTemplate.
So, I need to know how to accomplish a couple of options: I need to start out in either the InsertItemTemplate or the EmptyDataTemplate. If I do the latter, I will need to know how to get from there to the ItemTemplate so the rendering can be displayed.
What code should I use to display the data--that is, how do I move from the EmptyDataTemplate to the ItemTemplate?
There have been a few datapaging questions tonight, but mine is a bit different..
I have a regular datapager, in a seperate project it seemed to work fine with the same query and templates, but when I use it in my page, whenever the I try to page I get the emptydatatemplate when there should be data..
Here is my current ListView
[Code]....
I have tried binding data OnPreRender and setting the page properties under the OnPagePropertyChanging events.. still only getting my empty template whenever i navigate through the pages when there should be plenty of data..
I need accessing the function in my masterpage.
I have a.master and b.aspx with the content page.
Now in the page load of my content page, I want to execute the an sql query which is in a function in my master page.
How can I access the function in my master page?
code in my master page:
public function info () as string
'SQL Query
end function
I am trying to declare a public property and access it from another page. I can't seem to be able to declare it. I'be tried putting in the code behind but it gives me errors.

View 6 RepliesHere's the scenario: A class based on System.Web.UI.Page has been created. A number of content pages derive from this class. All of these content pages use the same master page. The content pages define controls which need to access things on the master page (in code-behind). This is fine - no problem. In particular, each content page has its own data grid. The grid on each page has the same name, so that common code can reference it. In fact, some event handling for the grids on each content page is identical, so would like to factor that code to the base class. Interestingly, I can actually define the event handler entirely in the base class, with no stub in the content class at all, because the wire-up of event handlers uses the event-handler name defined in the grid, and that name happens to be found in the inherited base class. All good and dandy... very cool in fact. The problem comes when the code in the base class needs to access any of the common elements from the content page's master. Remember, the master is the same, and I know the type of the master. I would like to do something like this in the base-class code:
((myMasterType)this.Master).PropertyofMaster=xxx;
The problem is, that myMasterType - the type of the master page the content pages are using - is not available at compile time, at least not from a class definition for a base page. I've found articles that claim that the class name of the master is available - and it is, but not from a separate class. I CAN see it and compile with the master's class name from, for example, the code behind of the various content pages. But the actually class simply isn't available, it seems, from a pure class (the base page class). Judging from other times this question has been asked, here are common misunderstandings offered as solutions: 1. Use a page directive to declare the master type. This is not even vaguely a part of the problem, as the issue is not code in the content page, but in a separate base class which content pages inherit from. That base class is a pure class -- no .ASPX file at all. 2. Pass a reference to the master object from the content page to the base class. This can be done, but is pointless, because I can already get it, using "this.Master" from the base class! But because the type of the master is not available at compile time from the base class, it can't be passed from the content page either - unless it is passed with type MasterPage, thus losing all the properties/methods publically defined in the specific master page class. 3. Move the base page class out of the App_Code folder because the app_code folder is compiled before the other classes, and thus before the master page class. Doesn't work -- put the master page class file right in the same folder with these content pages and their master page, and the master page class is still not available at compile time from within the class. Re-summarized: Base page inherited by content pages. Content pages all use a common master page. Want to access the public properties of that master page from the base page, at runtime. Barrier is that I can find no way from within the base class to cast the master page object to the actual master page subclass being used.
I created a webpage names Default.aspx. In its code behind i defined another public class named Test. Test class is not accessible in other pages code behind although it is defined as public.
View 8 RepliesLet's say I have the following;
public static void TryOut(int intOne, int intTwo, string strone, string strtwo){....}
And after I created dll, I will use it like that;
TryOut(1,3,"bla bla bla", "bla bla bla");
But I want the last variable to be optional. I mean this method could be used like that;
TryOut(1,3,"bla bla bla", "bla bla bla");
And Also like that
TryOut(1,3,"bla bla bla");
I know it is possibel but how I could do that I have no idea !
For reasons I would rather not discuss, I need to create a custom authentication system for my app. I was just reviewing the system and am having some doubts if my solution is thread safe. My goal was to create a solution that would allow my app to authenticate a user one time and that users authentication info would be shared by all master pages, pages, classes, user controls, etc that are used. (But not share the same info between users) Here is my setup: PageHttpModule.cs - this is added to the web.config as a httpModule.
public class PageHttpModule : IHttpModule
{
public void Init(HttpApplication app)
{
app.AuthenticateRequest += new EventHandler(OnAuthenticateRequest);
}
public void OnAuthenticateRequest(Object s, EventArgs e)
{
CurrentUser.Initialize();
}
public void Dispose() { }
}
CurrentUser.cs
public static class CurrentUser
{
public static bool IsAuthenticated { get; private set; }
public static string Email {get; set;}
public static string RealName {get; set;
public static string UserId {get; set;}
public static void Initialize()
{
CurrentUser.AuthenticateUser();
}
Note: this is a scaled down version of my authentication code.
public static void AuthenticateUser()
{
UserAuthentication user = new UserAuthentication();
user.AuthenticateUser();
if (user.IsAuthenticated)
{
CurrentUser.IsAuthenticated = true;
CurrentUser.UserId = user.UserId;
CurrentUser.Email = user.Email;
CurrentUser.RealName = user.RealName;
}
}
}
UserAuthentication.cs
public class UserAuthentication
{
public string Email { get; set; }
public string RealName { get; set; }
public string UserId { get; set; }
public bool IsAuthenticated { get; private set; }
public UserAuthentication()
{
IsAuthenticated = false;
Email = String.Empty;
RealName = String.Empty;
UserId = String.Empty;
}
public void AuthenticateUser()
{
//do some logic here.. if the user is ok then
IsAuthenticated = true
Email = address from db
UserId = userid from db;
Realname = name from db;
}
}
I have tested between 3 different browsers and it seems to work fine, but I am still learning and don't want to make a huge mistake. If my logic is totally wrong, then how should I do it so I dont have to put user lookups on every page directly?
I have a detailsview with template fields. when i go into edit mode i am trying to set the selectedvalue of a dropdownlist to be the value of the corresponding label from the item template in code behind as once i go into edit mode i loose the initial value from the detailsview and the dropdownlist defaults to the first listitem. what i am doing is onDataBinding of the detailsview i access the cell value of the label , i then assign that to a public variable but once i've exited the routine the public variable looses the value of the detailsview cell i've just assigned to it. this is the value i'm hoping to assign to the selectedvalue of the dropdownlist when i go into editmode. The reason i'm doing it this way is although i can use bind in the html to mantain the dropdownlist selected value between detailsview states once i come to update the detailview i get the following error
Databinding methods such as Eval(), XPath(), and Bind() can only be used in the context of a databound control.to work arround this i've had to assign the values to update paramteres also in code behind. here's my code behind page i've bolded the routines in question. drpDataStoreDDL is the variable in question.

how do access master page variables from .aspx page
View 1 RepliesHow can one access public property of User Control In Master Page on child Pages.
View 1 RepliesI'm coding a business layer for an ASP.NET application. I've created database methods in my BLL as static. I've created public static Func variables to be compiled and used in several different methods, like this:
namespace BLL
public class User
{
public static Func<Context, variable, result> selectUser;
private static void CompileQuery()
{
if(selectUser == null)
{
selectUser = CompiledQuery.Compile......
}
}
public static UserClass Select(int id)
{
CompileQuery();
//uses selectUser
}
public static SomethingElse DoSomethingElse()
{
CompileQuery();
//also uses selectUser
}
}
It'll be used in ASP.NET layer like this: using BLL;
private void AddUser()
{
UserClass user = User.Select(id);
}
My question is, since static variables are not thread-safe, is this a bad design decision? I'm thinking of either implementing a locking mechanism, which makes me think if it'd slow down the application, or using instantiated class approach which makes me wonder if query compiling would be beneficial.
In my example below I am trying to Bind 2 different size GoogleAds to the 2 first rows in the GridView. One Ad on each row. The ads that are inside.......
(i2 == 0) and(i2 == 1).
I need to use <%if (Counts < 2) %> in HTML to restrict it to just 2 Rows, so this variable needs to be passed correctly also. As it is now, Counts is not passed correctly so <%if (Counts < 5) %> needs to be set in order to see any ads at all. I beleive this is because Page.DataBind() is binding the last ad in memory from the loop.
So when running this code, the same ad (i2== 2) is set to 3 rows in the GridView. This is my problem!

How do declare a public variable .aspx web page that can be used in all the pages within my web application? And/or create a Public Sub?
View 3 RepliesI have a Master Page which controls the styling of my site. In the Code Behind, there are a few class instances instantiated as well as variables. These classes validate user access and then create user objects
I have a few Web Content Forms which carries out instructions based on the user objects. So far it seems that on each Web Content Form I have to create new instances of the classes found on the Master Page. This is doubling my work for every Web Content Form.
Is there anyway I can inhereit Classes and objects instantiated in the Master Page Code Behind?
Following is some code-behind for a ListView I'm using. Specifically, as the name of the procedure implies, it runs after an image is uploaded and, among other things, saves it to a folder in the project and puts the file name and path in a database table. This all occurs with a button click in either the ItemTemplate or the EmptyDataTemplate. The ItemTemplate updates itself but the EmptyDataTemplate isn't as well-behaved so I have to do a page refresh.
[Code]....
This is all fine and good but I would rather not refresh the page if I'm not operating from EmptyDataTemplate. What would be a good IF statement before the "Response.Redirect(Request.Url.AbsoluteUri)"? It should instruct the page to refresh only when it comes from the EmptyDataTemplate. I've tried all the EditIndex settings I could think of--not sure if the solution should be along those lines or something else.
How to create create variables/properties in master page, and let sub-pages access them? So my master will have a string property HomeUrl How can any page that uses the master page access this property?
