C# - AJAX Best Practice For Adding Html Components To A Page?
Jan 31, 2011
I'm new to AJAX/javascript, and I'm not sure what the best approach is for what I'm trying to do.
I'm calling page methods (WebMethods) on my Page using Javascript. The data I'm retrieving is a list of Divs basically.
I don't know how many will be returned, but they need to be inserted into the proper place on the page depending on their content.
I see a couple ways of doing this:
Create a list of HtmlGenericControls and pass them back. Create a list of Strings, where each String is the entire Div code I want to drop onto the page. (This feels wrong for some reason)Create simple container objects that have the necessary data in them. Pass those to the page and use them to create the Divs within javascript.

Someone developed nice HTML pages for a new site. My assignment is to add the code to make the site working with SQLServer.
I know how to make a new site starting from VWD or VS2008 c#
What would be the best approach? Building a new site and afterwards trying to swap my HTML with the one provided? Or what?

I wish I could go all the elements of an ASP.Net page (HTML elements) and manipulate its text property / value. How could I do that?
I've been checking, and the property this.Page.Form.Controls apparently gets all the elements, but I would only page elements that caught the event.
I'll put an example of code that I'm currently studying and trying adpater for my needs.

I'm interested to hear from other developers their opinion on an approach that I typically take. I have a web application, asp.net 2.0, c#.
What I usually do to write out drop downs, tables, input controls, etc. is in the code behind use StringBuilder and write out something like sb.Append("
I don't find myself using to many .net controls as I typically write out the html in the code behind. When I want to use jQuery or call JavaScript I just put that function call in my sb.Append tag like sb.Append("td...onblur='fnCallJS()'.
I've gotten pretty comfortable with this approach. For data access I use EntitySpaces.
I'm just kind of curious if this sort of approach is horribly wrong, ok depending on the context, good, time to learn 3.0, etc. I'm interested in learning and was just looking for some input.
Edit
After reading the comments here it sounds like I should take a look at MVC. I've not done that yet. The only hesitancy in doing so is that the existing project is just that, existing. There is a lot of code already done the way I explained and it is hard to imagine what would be involved in changing it, advantages of doing so, and just learning what that would take.
The other thing I'm taking away from the comments is that my code behind should really not include much of the sb.Append code, whereas now it is filled with it in numerous functions. To me it is not messy but that is because I know what each function does and can look at it and see, oh that writes out x, y, and z.
It's not uncommon for me to just have a div on the .aspx part and then build up the .innerHtml of that with the StringBuilder in the code behind.

There was a time, when ASP.NET AJAX was Atlas Alpha version. And there were some projects for update panels: Comfort ASP, FastPage (mine:)), MagicAjax, ZumiPage. Now looks like all they dead. What people now use for update panels, except Asp.Net Ajax that is loading huge amount of js not needed for update panel. I have problems with MagicAjax installing on .net4, its deleting my scripts I dont know why. So is there update panels that 100% is working on .net4 and know about jquery.
Used MagicAjax more old version - and now it works)

I have a set of links that exist in the master page. I have a css class i would like to assign to a particular one of them depending on if that is the page you are at during page load. ex: Home will have the current_page_item class if you are at the index page
This is what I have:
Code:
Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
DirectCast(Me.Master.FindControl("ctl00_homeLi"), HtmlGenericControl).Attributes.Add("class", "'current_page_item'")
End Sub

I have some static (pure html) pages in my MVC application that I need to authenticate, so that not just anybody can look at them. Is there an way to do this without moving all the code to asp files and adding a controller and from there use the Authorize attribute? I would really prefer to not need to do this!

I'm trying to add html text to some repeater items during DataBind, but the html text isn't parsed into controls it just displays as text. If I copy the text and just add it to the asp.net page it works fine so I know my syntax is fine. So is there a way to dynamically add more html text during the data-bind phase?

I am using the AJAX Control toolkit version 4.1.40412.0 in a C# web application that is using .NET 4.0.
I am programming with Visual Studio 2010. Most of the time, the AJAX Control toolkit works properly. However,
in one instance, the AJAX Toolkit generates this error message:
Microsoft JScript runtime error: Sys.InvalidOperationException: Two components with the same id

The error is generated here:

I have created a web app using the AJAX Enabled Web App template. I now want to add an advertising banner using an adobe flash file, which requires the use of the "Shockwave flash object" in the Components tab of the toolbox. I have added the relevant .dll file under references but still the option for the control in the toolbox is greyed out.
Is it possible to use the component tools with an AJAX web app?
Are the component tool available when using the express version of Visual Web Developer 2010?
If I can not use "Shockwave flash object" another method of creating an ad banner on my app?

I have a requirement of accessing Microsoft word Document on asp.net web page. It should be opened in asp.net page only. And one should be able to write anything in it. I knw the reference to Microsoft office object library need to be added. that way we can save a word doc or can append any doc on machine. But to allow it to be visible to all on browser ,we should follow the procedure as for activeX controls. by creating Object tag in page source section.
<object id="MS" classid="CLSID:0002034C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046">

Okay, this is a continuation of a previous question of mine, but it is distinct enough to be its own question. Based on user interaction, I'm calling a .ashx handler via a jquery ajax call, and that handler is building some html for me that includes some Telerik controls like a masked textbox (masked for a phone number like "(###) ###-####".
I got around all the hurdles of using Render() to get the html output of a server control even when it doesn't have a "Page" object or a ScriptHandler object.However, when I show the control to a user, I see the mask in the text of the textbox, but the mask doesn't "work" in the sense that when a user starts typing, it is as if the mask is really just text.
So, my question is, after putting the html code out for a masked textbox, how do I tell whatever javascript is supposed to mask the input to really start masking on that specific control?

I am dynamically adding controls to a page with an updatepanel. The controls do trigger a post back but their events do not fire.
For example:
LinkButton link =
new
LinkButton();
link.Height = 45;
link.Width = 250;
link.Font.Underline =
link.Font.Bold =
link.ValidationGroup = "NoValidation";
link.Click += new
EventHandler(EventDoesNotFire);
I have set a break point on the Load_Page and in the EventDoesNotFire method. The Load_Page fires, but it never enters the EverDoesNotFire method.

I got an updatepanel which contains a normal panel on MasterPage. The updatepanel does not contain content place holder. On the content page, I have to add triggers to updatepanel for buttons that are dynamically created on "page_load" event. The problem is that, since the page_load event of content page is being called before master page's page_load event, UpdatePanel is not being created. So that, whenever i try to add triggers in page_load event of content page, i got an error like "A control with ID 'ctl00$editableContent$ctl42' could not be found for the trigger in UpdatePanel 'up1'."
The code below is for adding triggers to updatepanel for buttons.
MasterClass master = (MasterClass)Page.Master;
AsyncPostBackTrigger trig = new AsyncPostBackTrigger(); [code]....

I have been building web apps for a while now and still do not know the answer to this.
I have just built a web app (using webforms) which has a page for inserting a new budget request and a page to edit and manage this budget request.
What is a pain is if I have to make changes to the business logic then I need to edit same / similar code in two places.
What I am thinking of doing is creating one page to handle this with only UPDATE logic and if the URL on page load has no ID parameter then create a blank row in table and use this new ID and then UPDATE.
Is this bad practice? I obv know I need to clear out old blank rows at some point.
