C# - Exception Being Handled In Masterpage?
Jan 12, 2011If an exception was thrown in a page, would it be possible to be handled within the masterpage (assuming it wasn't handled before?)

View 2 RepliesI have a Asp.net webservice. This webservice uses a dll ( the purpose of the dll is to listen at a port say 3305 and accept the request from one of its client (say client is some name PG and this client is different from webservice client) and the dll keeps communicating to the PG client to get some data.)
The webservice works like this.
When a request comes from my test program to Webservice, the webmethod calls the dll api ( to establish the connection between the dll and PG client). and after the connection is established between dll and PG client, the webmethod uses the data from my test program and implements some business logic and then returns some values to the test program.
After the first request from my test program is processed, the connection between DLL and PG will still be existing so as to serve the subsequent request from the test program.
The problem is after the first request is finished, the second request is not being processed by webservice, the request doesnot come to the webmethod or even to the class constructor.
is the connection between the DLL and PG , hanging up the webservice?
I thought I had this down. Why isn't my code handling this? It starts writing rows and it gets to the NULL row and then it chokes because the value in the cell is null. I said in the code when it sees the null to assign "". See last line.
[Code]....
I have a MasterPage (MasterPage.master) with 2 child MasterPages (specialMaster.master and standardMaster.master). From the MasterPage.master I need to get at some of the controls in one of the children, specialMaster.master, say for example to hide certain
content if a session variable is not null.
I have a action filter:
[Code]....
Once the action filter handles the validation, instead of redirecting to another pages is it possible just to return the view associated with the action with the updated modelstate? Basically this is to handle business validation exceptions thrown by the business layer in a generic way.
am wondering how to do the following... I have a registration system. When the user successfully registers, he is then led down a series of data gathering pages (for his profile) and then,finally, ends on his profile's home page where he can start to use the site. All this happens without ever logging into the system so, he is unauthenticated
and unconfirmed. My question is, how does this happen? How can I allow my user to be unauthenticated (and unconfirmed, but this I understand) and use all aspects of the Web site? The way I have things set up right now, my code should be doing this:
case CreateProfileStatus.Success:
//FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(userName, false);
Response.Redirect("NextPage.aspx", false);
[code]...
I have 2 masterpages. (Default.master and User.master).I have a hidden field in Default.master then how can i get the hidden field value of Default.master file from User.master.is there any way to access that hidden field like: Request.form("hidID") ?
View 2 RepliesHow, or maybe where, is the session timeout handled when you set SQL Server as state handler in an ASP.NET application?
Is it the .NET framwork who after loading session objects from the DB does a judgement on whether or not the objects are expired, or is it a job on the SQL Server itself that takes care of this? The reason I suspect (or even concidered) the latter possibility, is that the script that created the ASPState mentioned something about a ASPState_Job_DeleteExpiredSessions-element.
If it is so that it is an SQL Server job that cleans up, how often does this job trigger and how does it align with the timeout parameter in web.config?
There are 5-6 insert, select queries at my project. All queries and program works fine at device simulator.In fact all queries also works at the device (intermec - windows mobile 6.1 classic) but "only one of the insert query" doesnt work (very simple one : insert into members values(a,b,c,d,e) like this.) at the device.

I've got a gridview that returns student order history which works just fine. It pulls the StudentId from a hidden field on page load. I have a link button that ADDS AN ORDER when clicked. It calls a stored procedure, inserts the record, then rebinds the gridview and displays the new record at the top of the list.
Problem is when I go to EDIT it, i get this error... "The GridView 'GridViewOrderHistory' fired event RowEditing which wasn't handled." But the interesting thing is the error doesn't occur if I close the browser and reload the page and then click on that new record that was created. Obviously I'm missing something in my code when the new order is created. Here are the 2 subs involved in the process.

View 3 RepliesI am working on a 3-tier asp.net application. Currently I'm stuck up in a situation where I need to handle a specific type of exception (User Defined) in DAL and Show alert to the user if that exception occurs in DAL.
I tried following things:
1) I raised that exception from the DAL and catch it in BLL and throw a new BLL exception to for that DAL exception and finally catch it in the UI layer to show the alert to the user. I've successfully implement this in my project. But there are some issues in this approach. First of all I feel this is not right way to do this as it may lead to performance related issues. Secondly, the application contains more than 500 pages and classes. so I need to attach additional catch block in every method to catch the BLL exception. which is the last option i'd like to take.
2) in second approach I logged the the DAL exception into a text file. but problem in this approach is that how could the UI layer know that exception has occurred and show the alert to the user. Is there any event in asp.net where i could handle all this activities?
my question is what is the best approach to handle this type of situation? Will Exception handling block help me in this?
I've tried reading many articles on this but i couldn't get an answer for my question? I might not be using right keywords for my search.
In ASP.NET,How can i know the Specific details about an exception (like What kind of Exception it is (FileNotFound /Arithmentc etc..) )from a General Exception class object.
View 2 RepliesI am populating the gridview on the basis of listbox selection . However, I am setting the datasource in the click event after listbox entry. When i am trying to update any record in the gridview this error gets thrown because the datasourceid from the aspx page has been removed. Code for reference -
protected void btn_save_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
ArrayList list = new ArrayList();
foreach (object o in ListBox2.Items)
{
list.Add(o);
}
string str2 = null, str, host;
string str1 = "SELECT SYSTEMNAME, DATETIME, PDOWNTIME, UDOWNTIME, SYSDOWNMINS, REASON FROM PLANNED_DOWNTIME where ";
host = Convert.ToString(list[0]);
str2 = " ( SYSTEMNAME like '" + host + "'";
for (int i = 1; i < list.Count; i++)
{
host = Convert.ToString(list[i]);
str2 = str2 + " or SYSTEMNAME LIKE'" + host + "'";
}
str = str1 + str2 + " )";
string connectstring = "Data Source=SRCPA035\ovops;Initial Catalog=reporter;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=sa;Password=ril123";
DataTable dt = new DataTable();
SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(connectstring);
try
{
connection.Open();
SqlCommand sqlCmd = new SqlCommand(str, connection);
SqlDataAdapter sqlDa = new SqlDataAdapter(sqlCmd);
sqlDa.Fill(dt);

i have this application structure:
1. Presentation Layer which calls
2. Business Logic Layer which in turn calls
3. Data Access Layer to do the dealing with the database.
Now i have a Contacts page from where i can add a new contact to the database.So to add a New Contact i fill in all the required details and then call a Add Method (residing in the BLL) from the page, which in turn call a Add Method residing in the DAL.this method in the DAL returns the Current Identity of the record which is then return back to the BLL method and finally delivered on the page.this is fine. but what if a get an exception how do i handle it properly because the method in DAL has a return type of int and i dont want to throw another error!! coz other wise i will have to write try catch in almost all the methods.
//something like this
public int AddMethod(ContactClass contactObj)
{
int result = 0;[code]...
rather i want to show the user a user-friendly message which they can easily understand and in the mean while i will send a mail to myself documenting the Error that just occurred.how can i implement my custom exception classes.
Is there any way to uniquely identify a particular exception from the general exception class.
i.e any property or method that retrieves a unique identifier that to identify a particular exception.
I have kept some error values and corresponding error texts in an xml file. I want to read that xml file and have to taken the error ids and fix the corresponding texts to a label. in the case of a system exception we have to identify a particular exception.
Difference between Exception and Fault Exception..?
Can i use Fault Exception when i get the Exception.
We're getting this InternalSubStringWithChecks exception with our application's healthMonitoring. This exception is like the Padding is invalid and cannot be removed exception where it's being recorded and we're getting a notification email but the end user is unaware that an actual error has happened. Though we don't want our event log filled up with this rubbish! The stack trace is:
Parameter name: length

I have simple 3 tier web application and have mostly CRUDE functionalities. Recently I required to add new console application to the existing solution in which I call data layer methods for retrieving data from DB but I get an exception "The type initializer for threw an exception."When I debugged I found that the exception is thrown at datalayer on first line of class where I get connectionstring from
web.config, the code is public static readonly string CONNECT_STRING =
ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["DbConnectString"].ConnectionString;
Now if I hardcode the connection string value like public static readonly string CONNECT_STRING = "Data Source=XYZ;uid=sa;password=XXX;initial catalog=ABC;"
it works fine.I don't understand what is the issue here as web application works fine with this datalayer.
