C# - Export / Import To Excel With Combo Box?
Nov 11, 2010
I'm still struggling with my scenario. I have looked everywhere for a solution and cannot find a solution. I am using C# and ASP.NET and I need to export data to an Excel spreadsheet.
I have a list of applications that contains Application objects. Each Application object has a status ID. When I export these applications to Excel then I need a column with a drop down/combo box in it. In this drop down/combo box should be a list of all the statuses from the database. And then I need the status to be selected to that of the application's status ID.
Another question is also with regards to the above scenario. When the user downloads the Excel document then the user can change the status of each application by selecting a different value in the drop down. I will need to upload this spreadsheet and loop through the rows and get the values of the columns and the value of the selected item in the drop down/combo box. How would you do this? Is this possible?
I may not use COM components, so I tried to go with EPPlus or NPOI (it does not have to be these 2) but it doesn't seem like they support my scenario. How would I be able to achieve my scenario? Once again, it doesn't have to make use of EPPlus and NPOI.

instead of using gridview to insert student marks (I have hundreds of students) thought I used the Excel:
1) allow managers of each module after authentication to download the excel file (containing the students enrolled in the given module), the excel file ted is generated by the following code: Id_student ____ maks of subject1 -------- ----maks of subject2
[Code]....
But in this code I do not know how to:
* Add the following condition: the student'marks is between 0 and 20.
* Calculate the average of this module : sum (coeff * mark) / sum (coeff)
2) Allowing responsable module send me the file containing the data (but then I do not know how)
3) Using data, by sending them to the database to calculate averages.

In my .net 2.0 application, i have used export / import excel option. In local, its working perfectly but in server i am getting the below errors,
Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {00024500-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} failed due to the following error: 80070005.Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

ASP.NET is not authorized to access the requested resource. Consider granting access rights to the resource to the ASP.NET request identity. ASP.NET has a base process identity (typically {MACHINE}ASPNET on IIS 5 or Network Service on IIS 6) that is used if the application is not impersonating. If the application is impersonating via <identity impersonate="true"/>, the identity will be the anonymous user (typically IUSR_MACHINENAME) or the authenticated request user.
To grant ASP.NET access to a file, right-click the file in Explorer, choose "Properties" and select the Security tab. Click "Add" to add the appropriate user or group. Highlight the ASP.NET account, and check the boxes for the desired access.

I have a web form that contains a GridView, which impliments Search in Grid with a TextBox and Button control in the footer. This works as I have it now. I have also implimented a Export to Excel function. The Export to Excel works by itself if the Search in Grid function is not included in the footer.The Export to Excel function errors when trying to render the Grid for the export. Is there a better way to incorporate both functions and accomplish the same thing? Am I missing something simple?

I've got an .rdlc report which I print from my .net app (C# Visual Studio 2005), where I use a RemoteReportPrinter object. I give it as parameters the server name, report name, report parameters, etc. Works fine. My question is, I would live to do an analagous export of that report to Excel. Set it up exactly the same, but have it export to Excel rather than print, probably using some other type of object than RemoteReportPrinter.

We are deveopingawebiste in asp.net. There are tempelates of each aspx page made in the form of excel sheet. Upon completion of the online calculation, the user is to be allowed to export the results to excel and save them. There would be obviously no formulae in such sheet
I do not want to install Excel on theserver and instead want to utilize the Excel installed on the user's computer for this purpose as every user's computer is expected to have Excel installed. Is this possible to do? How to do this?
I am not an expert in this. let me know if you would need any more information or clarification.

I have a GridView that I want to export to Excel. When I use the sample code I find online, it exports the content to Excel just fine, but for some reason it also clears out all grid lines outside of my exported table.
For your average excel user this is easy enough to fix, but I need this solution to work for everyone.
So then is there a way to export the data in a GridView into an Excel Workbook so that it looks like it was just typed into Excel? I've pasted the code I am using below, assume that a GridView called toPrint exists and has accurate data.
Response.Clear();
Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=" + name + "_Registration_Forms.xls");
Response.Charset = "";
Response.ContentType = "application/vnd.ms-excel";
Page.EnableViewState = false;
System.IO.StringWriter stringWrite = new System.IO.StringWriter();
System.Web.UI.HtmlTextWriter htmlWrite = new HtmlTextWriter(stringWrite);
toPrint.RenderControl(htmlWrite);
Response.Write(stringWrite.ToString());
Response.End();
EDIT: Found one partial solution. If I export as a comma-delimited list and set the header to be a CSV file, it opens fine and all grid lines (even those outside of the exported data) are showing. The only problem with this of course is having to strip out every comma and newline character from my values before exporting them.

Some time back i posted for help in uploading CSV file to DB. With the assistance of other members, i was able to set that up on a test page and got the functionality working.. Now project is coming to the end and need to take that code / logic and incorporate with our application. On certain forms, we need to allow the user to export / import via a CSV file.. So this question is muti part for each function.
#1 Export = Since each form is unique, how can i setup the page to export that forms data that is currently in the DB? (I've used this control before [URL] and worked great) for excel. This may work fine for exporting the data out of the db for the user.
#2 Import, if the above is used or some other solution to export the specific table data, is there anyway to validate that the csv file that is being uploaded contains all the columns and is in the correct order? I mean if they were to export the data, but come back few days later to import it, and didnt realize that they selected a csv for another page or maybe they picked the right file, but while editing it they removed a comma or entered some data that would throw the format out of wack.. just looking for a way to read the selected file to import and compare to the table it is suppose to go into and make sure that the columns match and if possible, check for duplicates. I have read thru the forum and found ways to read the file into memory, set the data to a datatable or dataset and working with it that way.
So really looking for some good examples of being able to allow the export of data to .CSV and then allowing the data to be imported back into the table.(with validation in place before the import occurs)
