C# - How To Avoid "The ObjectContext Instance Has Been Disposed " Error
Mar 30, 2011
I have a doubt concerning the Entity Framework in .NET.
I have a simple ASP .NET web page that has to insert some data in SQL Server with this function:
[code]....
The good news is that the code that Insert function encapsulates I can move it to the place which is called. So my question is: What if there is a place in which I would be forced to call the function? How then I could avoid the error. Passing the parameter as reference (I tried and did not work).

I am REALLY stuck with this and need a solution in the next 24 hours .i I have uploaded my asp.net web application to the web and have the database and connection strings functioning and reading the data from the database. But when I try to write to the DB
I get the following error :
Server Error in '/' Application.
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.
(provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
Description:An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that
SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
The wierd thing about this is the connection strings work from the local machine when I run from Visual Studio and I can write to the DB there, I just cannot write to the DB from the URL.
I am pretty new to asp.net but I am sure it has to be something to do with the web.config.

I am trying to create a simple login page in ASP.NET C# but am getting some error.
I googled about the error, and tried all the solutions but to no avail.What am I doing wrong? The error is:
"A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)"
I think it's something to do with my connection string which is as follows:
<add name="cn"
connectionString="server=HCL;DataBase=GS;Integrated Security=True" />
"HCL" is another machine connected to my PC through the LAN and this database, "GS", resides on it. Is the problem with the value I am giving in "Server" attribute of the above code? If not what else may I be doing wrong?

I do have a log system and the correct error is well explicit there, but I want to give a better message to the user.
I keep trying several ways but I'm using Telerik components and well jQuery and I ended up using both ASP.NET Ajax methods and jQuery, so I use
function pageLoad() {
try { [code]....
as well$(document).ready(function() { ... }
that alert(err) is never fired even upon OnClick events
what's the best approach to avoid this message errors and provide a cleaner way?
all this happens in <asp:UpdatePanel> as I use that when I didn't know better (3 years ago!) and I really don't want to mess up and build all again from scratch
Updated with more error windows after volpav solution

Could someone explain what happens to the Repositories that are created when they are no longer needed? Are they automatically disposed of, or should we dispose of them manually?
Using EF4 as the DAL, to keep the program efficient I have been building repositories for the Model that abstract the data needed for specific views or actions. I have also used the Iinterface for the methods and call them in the Controller to pass them to the View. At some point the program needs to pass a behavior or request that requires the creation of a new repository and the process may repeat itself over and over again. What happens to the repositories that created for previous views, but are no longer needed? Should the dispose be written into each repository, or does garbage collection take care of this? How should this handled?

I have a simple Entity query:
[code]....
I then check whether one of the result values is more recent than six months ago using an if..then like so:
If rhcexists.First.SignatureDate > Date.Today.AddMonths(-6) Then
End If
However, if there are no results returned this will return an error. Is there a way for me to tell it to act as if the date is older than six months if there is no value at all? e.g., could I in pseudo do something like:
If Exists(rhcexists.First.SignatureDate, Date.Today.AddMonths(-8)) > Date.Today.AddMonths(-6) Then
End If

I am confused about the constructor of ObjectContext
// Summary:
// Initializes a new instance of the System.Data.Objects.ObjectContext class
// with a given connection string and entity container name.
//
// Parameters:
// connectionString:
// The connection string, which also provides access to the metadata information.
//
// defaultContainerName:
// The name of the default entity container. When the defaultContainerName is
// set through this method, the property becomes read-only.
protected ObjectContext(string connectionString, string defaultContainerName);
I am not understanding the parameters clearly.

I think the popup message is a poor idea because OnClientUploadError has already provided developers a good option to handle the error easily in whichever way they prefer. The worst is that if a user clicks OK, he will see a window that should be seen only by software developers. Is there any trick to stop the error alert?

i have a command like
SQLCommand cmd = new SQLCommand("insert into customers name values ('"+textbox1.Text+"')",conectionstring);
cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
now when people enter a (') single quote, this doesnt work. how do i avoid this error as this is driving me nuts!! i cannot prevent users from entering single quotes as names like "O'Connor" contain a single quote. parameterized query doesnt seem to be the best solution as it involves loads of coding and will involve huge changes in the code. as its not a fresh app im making... can some modification in the code above so this can be avoided?

I receive the error message below, I think because the database field in question is null (I realize I probably should not allow null values, but I can't even display the page to allow the user to enter a value---and I would prefer not to enter a default value in SQL).
How do I avoid this error message? If the column is null (and it is supposed to be an integer), do I need to change the value to something like "0" in the code behind---or is there any easier way to do this right in aspx page (see source of error message below)? Either way, I'm not sure how to do either (I can't get any such lines of code to work here). Object cannot be cast from DBNull to other types.
Description:
An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.InvalidCastException: Object cannot be cast from DBNull to other types.

I've created a small website with a simple sqlite database using vwd 2010 .net 4. In dev and test envionments everything works fine, however when i promote to my hosting provider i receive the following error:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.
(provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
I've been configuring the connection strings (autogenerated from entity framework and attached db) but unable to get it working on the hosting provider, I'm assuming it's related to permissions but not entirely sure how to resolve - here's the web.config as it stands:
<add
name="ApplicationServices"
connectionString="data [code].....
For info the environments are set up as follows:
- Dev environment is vwd express 2010 with sqlite mdf attached
- Test environment is windows 7 server, iis 7 with appdomain identity set to network service

I don't know if it's IIS, ASP.NET or IIS7 related. I take a chance here, if you think I'm in the wrong forum, just tell me which one I should post to.
I have made the smallest demo project to illustrate my problem. You can download the sources
Here
Visual Studio 2008, .NET 3.5, IIS7, Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bits. The IIS Website is configured
ONLY for Windows Authentication in an Integreated pipeline app pool (DefaultAppPool).
Here's the problem. I have an Asp.NET MVC 2 application. In an action, I start a thread. The View returns.
The thread is doing it's job... but it needs to access Thread.CurrentPrincipal.Identity.Name
BANG
The worker process of IIS7 stops. I have a window that says: "Visual Studio Just-In-Time Debugger An unhandled exception ('System.Object.DisposedException') occured in w3wp.exe [5524]"
I checked with the debugger and the Thread.CurrentPrincipal.Identity is valid, but the Name property is disposed.
If I put a long wait in the action before it returns the view, then the Thread can do it's job and the Identity.Name is not disposed. So I think the Name gets disposed when the view is returned.
For the sake of the discussion, here's the code that the thread runs (but you can also download the demo project. The link is on top of this post):
[Code]....
Here's the code that starts the thread
[Code]....

I have a page like Order - Order lines. Order represents by some textboxes and ddls, Order lines represents by GridView.
I want to let users add order lines without save changes to database. For example: he adds 4 order lines, fill order info and then hits Save button. Only an that moment all information should be saved to DB.
When I use code like
using (Entities ctx = new Entities())
{
//create new OrderLine
OrderLine ol = OrderLine.CreateOrderLine(1, 1, "", 1);
//add OrderLine to OrderLines collection
ctx.CreateOrderLines.AddObject(ol);
}
newly created OrderLine does not appears in my object context, so I can't access it and bind GridView to new OrderList collection.
How can I solve this problem? Or maybe there are another ways to perform this task?
