There is Role Management feature in ASP.NET It works on local development machine. For our project we need customers admin to be able to create new users and manage their roles. So, basically same what aspnet_regsql.exe does. Question is Should we develop our own pages and forms or use some ready made tool?

However, if i still want to use this role feature of asp.net, but I do not like the pre-define database schema, I want to extract role information from my own database table and bind it to the role.
I have created my own custom role provider class "SGI_RoleProvider" and configured properly.
Everything is working fine.
Suppose that I have added a public method say "SayHello()", then how can i call that. Because if i am using Roles then the method is not displayed. If i am forcefully using that Roles.SayHello() then compiler gives the error.
how can i call this. Because creating a new instance of SGI_RoleProvider is meaningless.
How do I check in C# what the current users role is, and print it to the screen.

How can I do that? Which class's member does XmlSiteMapProvider call to check that if securityTrimmingEnabled="true"?
I need to check in conditional logic if a user has more that one role associated.Script should work like:

I am working on an intranet website using ASP.NET and was wondering what exactly I can gain by enabling roles when Windows authentication is enabled for my website. I can check if users belong to groups with the User object so why would I need to enable roles given that windows authentication is enabled?

If I add a check to the site.master to show/hide a menu item based on role there are no roles listed for the user anymore. I have tried both Page.User.IsInRole("Role1") and HttpContext.Current.User.IsInRole("Role1") neither of which is true. I also receive a failure on [Authorize(Roles="Role1")] filter.
I am creating a website, where my client is planning to target 1000's or user registrations with their login area etc. Is it a good idea to use role management/aspnetdb for this purpose?
View 9 RepliesI have created data base called"AspNetServicesDB" in sql server and then created login called"AspNetServicesUser" under login section.After that I created new user called "AspNetServicesUser" under my newly created database.Then I used "aspnet_regsql.exe" command and successfully configured.Once I checked "AspNetServicesDB" data base I could see all the tables were successfully created.
Problem I always getting error "Could not establish a connection to the database. " when I try to select provider. My connection string as follows.

I am doing an upgrade and i am thinking to use master pages role management. i have few questions?
1) How can i use controled view for users/administrators on the page.
2) how can i use active directory to use authintication?
3) but i want to use .net role management to control the role management?
I am new to asp.net and developing an application where there will be some roles like (admin, entry user, maker, checker) one user can have all or can have partial roles based on the provided roles and the page should restrict functionality based on the user role.

I know it's possible to use this information in a winform, wpf or console application. But I rather to determine which user with what roles are running a sepecific method, so I could decide upon them and run different codes. In addition in a desktop app. how a user can login? View 3 RepliesI'm workng on a new, green-field ASP.Net application. We're implementing a base page which all pages will be, er, based on. The application will be running under Integrate Windows Auth, so I'll have the user's account details. With these, I'll be going to several databases (in which the user will exist) to find out what roles they are assigned to in each db. I'll be holding the role yay/nay in a bool array, and key into it via an enum.
There will be a session object that will hold a few things, and the roles assigned for that user. I'm thinking of making the session object available as a property of the base page, as the code would be something like this:

But, I'm sure you'll agree, it looks sucky...If there was a CheckSecurity method on the base page, it would have to take a concrete DatabaseRoles object, but also an enum of which role to check, which would also look sucky. And finally, there would be a requirement at a later date to add more databases and their security settings...

I think I'm missing something simple...I have a customRole Provider set up and it seems to be working fine - I can add/change/delete info using the WAT.For my Authorization I do a custom routine that is separate from the .net provider that basically says the users is or is not authenticated (true/false).If the user IS authorized how do I set the cookie (or whatever) letting .NET know who they are so I can use the roles on a directory level?I know I can use Roles.IsUserInRole on individual pages but I'd like to be able to use directory based authorization too (from the web.config).

I want to use a local group to restrict access to an ASP.NET web application to local users.
I've created a Windows group (TestLocalGroup) and Windows user accounts and assigned them all to the new group. The group and accounts are on the IIS7 web server.
In my web.config, I can properly restrict access to specific users by defining the following settings...

ut I can't seem to get it to work for the group. This code won't allow my group members access...

I don't have any "roleManager" section. Do I need that?
I'm creating a custom Role provider based on the ASP.NET Role provider. I have 3 tables. One for Users, one for Roles, one for UsersInRoles.The Users table has no password column because the users are authenticated with ActiveDirectory. That's my approach so far. I can't get the cusstom Role Provider to work, anyone has the same situation like me. How do you make a custom Role provider works with AD?

1 Create a profile of type object
2 Assign it to the Principal profile
3 assign the principal to the Http.Current.User (this now has the complete profile information )
As i understand upon redirection the principal is recreated and i loose the information i had stored in the profile.
I there a way to persist the profile information ?
I though can achieve persisting some information using FormsAuthenticationTicket in userData but that wouldent solve my purpose ..
We are trying to implement Custom Role membership provider for our web app. For authorization we want to check for one more field like Facilityid for the logged on user along with role he has. eg. my User1 having Role1 with Facility1 can access some option and same user role for Facility2 have different option. So is there a way we can extend the existing role/profile provider to authorize user with this additional field along with role assigned.
