C# - How To Sort A GridView By Clicking On The Header
Feb 4, 2011
I want to sort a GridView by clicking on the header. I guess all i need is the header name and then pass it into sql to get the data back sorted. How is it possible to get the header name?

here is the code for the page:
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Imports System.Data
Imports System.IO
Imports System.Collections.Generic
Imports System.Web.UI.WebControls

I have created a website that has some gridview controls that call stored procedures in a SQL db and display the results of the procedures. Two of the gridview controls have sorting enabled, and one has pagination enabled.
The site loads for all users who have tried it so far.
However, one user gets a "webpage not found" (HTTP 400 Bad request) error whenever they click on the pagination links or sorting links on the gridview control. It seems like it's not a security issue because the website runs as a user with permission to the database.

Is this a good method for displaying a soricon? or are there better ways of doing it;
[URL]
Also when the gridview is first loaded its sorted by a "Date Submitted" field which is sorted on the data source (stored procedure) is there any way of showing the icon then so people know that it is sorted by "Date Submitted" at the moment the icon only shows when someone re-sorts the grid.

I have a page with a TextBox, a Button, a GridView, and a SqlDataSource. I click the Button to execute the SQL in the TextBox using the SqlDataSource. The SqlDataSource populates the GridView. Everything works as expected until I click a column heading to sort.
When I click a column heading, the GridView disappears and I have to click the Button to display the grid again. When I do, the grid is displayed in the order of the column I clicked.
I don't understand why the GridView is disappearing when I click a column header.
Does anyone know how to fix this so the GridView is sorted and displayed only by clicking the column header?

I have several grid views indide div's, and when I click the Sort header on an open div the div collapses and no sort happens. I believe it is just reloading the entire page but when I surround PageLoad with !ISPostBack then the page redraws as blank. Since the sort script is generated by the GV, I don't know how to stop it from creating side effects.
Here's my code:
<script type="text/javascript" language="javascript">
function toggleDisplay(id) {
var obj = document.getElementById(id);
obj.style.display = (obj.style.display == "none") ? "" : "none";
return false; // cancel the href
}
</script>

I am looking to sort a column on my gridview by simply clicking on the column rather than clicking on the column header. In the design I have been given, the column header will not be shown, and I need to be able to give the user to sort this column, by simply just clicking any where on the column.

When I click on my GridView header "End Time" all the rows which contain the string "N/A" disappear.
Here is my code:

Note: GetSortDirection returns "endTime ASC" or "endTime DESC" and save in ViewState:

Then I fill the DataAdapter and use the ViewState info to sort it:

I am using a Webgrid as part of an MVC 3 app. The weird thing is the first display of the page with the grid displays fine but when I click on a heading to sort, the grid is not displayed as part of the page when I am running under the web server provided by the VS 2010 installation. When I do a View Source of that page, all of the grid stuff (as table elements) is there to be displayed. It just does not show up in the browser. So, I wrote the html to a file and copied the javascript and css files to the same folder and then ran the file under IE and everything displays as it should.

Just spent about 8 hours googling and looking through this forum for a solution on how to make sure that I can dynamically sort. Here is the situation.
I have 1 Gridview that displays 10 different scenarios based on what button is clicked.
I am also returning only top 10 records. I am doing all of the data binding pragmatically. So I have BoundFields, HyperLinkFields etc.
I also want to sort some records. When I change DataSource SQL statement the gridview somehow remembers what the last sort value was and it errors out saying that value "x" cannot be sorted because it does not exists.
I tried this:
Tried setting gridview1.sqldatasourceid = null; gridview1.allowsorting = false; gridview1.databind();
Here I get an error that says that the data source does not support sorting? Doesnt it say gridview1.allowsorting = false;
I also tried gridview1.sort("", SortDirection.Ascending); This does nothin... except query my database one more time because i have a onSorting event that looks like this:
[Code]....
Here is an example of just one of those SLQ statements inside GetSQLQuery:

Scenario:
I have a Gridview where I want to handle the Sorting in a custom control that I've added to the header.
I've added this control to my GridView's Header via OnRowCreate event handling. I want the Sort Expressions to persist session to session (via Webparts Personalization)
Here is what I have for adding the custom header control to the GridView Header
[Code]....
This works out well for adding the control, but I can't get anything to persist because these controls are creating initially via postback (per the event) and re-created on all subsequent postbacks. I can't add an If(!IsPostback) because the controls are initially created on the gridview's postback (well at least thats how it's acting when I put it in there) If I were to add this control via the ASP page, not via the Codebehind, I would be able to persist the control. If I try to treat it as though everything is setup correctly, and assign my custom control's controls to [Personalizable], I get a runtime error telling me that I can only have webpartzones in or before Page_init (I'm guessing this is due to when/where the
gridview hits the OnRowCreate event). If there is some fundimental logic I'm missing, or best practices that I'm moving away from,

i have a gridview bound to sql datasource with template fields binding the columns. I have set the Header Style to a css class. I have 3 columns not bound to data as Add, Edit and Delete. When I set the text color to white for the header only the non bound columns go white. The bound columns are BLUE like hyperlink. Any one know a way round this. (If I set the style in the gridview the all columns are white. Want to set in external css file).

I have a gridview with data. I want a button which is not part of the gridview. Then if I press a button the gridview is sorted by two colums. i.e column1 ascending column2 descending.
I am not looking to work with a Sqldatasource as I use a data access layer. So the sort would have to be from a datatable and databind or directly with the gridview.

I'm looking for a way to sort the rows of a datatable without setting the DefaultView.Sort to a specific column. I have a datatable in session that users can add records to. I want them to be able to sort the data by clicking on a button. But new records added after that need to show up at the bottom of the list until the sort button is clicked again.

I have a gridview in an updatepanel with sorting enabled and an event handler as follows:
protected void MyGridSort(object sender, GridViewSortEventArgs e)
{
var TheDirection = (e.SortDirection).ToString();
var TheColumn = (e.SortExpression).ToString();
I put a breakpoint just after these lines. Every time I press the column header, my variable TheDirection is always showing Ascending. Why is it not toggling from ascending to descending and back?
