C# - Implementing A Client Server Solution For Chats?
Dec 29, 2010
I have a quite advanced application, where I need to add some client/server functionality. Some examples of functionalities is:
Chat
One vs. one fight in a browser game
Draw people on a map
I am creating this application in ASP.NET and AJAX. I do not use Silverlight/Java Applet/Flash or anything else. If possible, I do not want to change this for other reasons.
I thought about creating some kind of game server, and then communicating either web services or TCP protocol: But I have NO idea if this is a good idea. Also, I don't know how to do this.
So my question is:
What's the best way to implement this? And is it even possible? And if it is, could you give a reference or two?

Apropos MSDN link: [URL] [.NET Framework 4 - ASP.NET] Implementing Client Callbacks Programmatically Without Postbacks in ASP.NET Web Pages Using the code from the above link in the following code snippet, if you keep a break point on the statement "if (IsPostBack)" in the Page_Load event. The control moves into the "if (IsPostBack)" block after the alert, which mean that it is a Postback. Then, how come you say "...Without Postbacks"? I am getting confused here.

I want to have an upload functionality for uploading large files -- as large as 1GB. I see some sites successfully implementing reliable upload functionality without using any upload clients e.g. ActiveX, Java, etc. Some suggest, the secret is sending the large file in smaller and more manageable chunks to the server. If that't the case how do I handle that?

I have two websites (one asp classic and the other asp.net) which we would like to implement some kind of security based on the client's hardware. We want something other than a password which could be shared. The purpose is to be sure access to information on the websites is not shared.
We were contrmplating storing hardware info in our database and validating against that upun website entry.
I have been looking into ActiveX (it would be acceptable to limit our users to IE), although we do have users who would like to use I-Phones. I have done no ActiveX development myself but have found a few articles on the web about ActiveX but that whole approach looks complicated. And also there seems to be a 64bit issue making it even more difficult.
So, I wonder if anybody has any advice as to what the best options might be for securing the website access in a way that would prevent sharing?

I'm trying to create a .NET solution and add class libraries to it. First - in VS2008 I go to File > New > Project > Other Project Types > Visual Studio Solutions > Blank Solution. Then - after VS2008 creates the blank solution I right click on the solution and select Add > New Project > Visual C# > Class Library. However, when I add the Class Library to the solution, the solution icon disappears from Solution Explorer (although the solution name is still in the VS2008 title bar). Why does the solution icon disappear
from the Solution Explorer when I attempt to do this?

I am stumped by a serious issue in Vs 2008.
I created a Blank solution called HelloWorld.Then I added a new Class Library project by the name of HelloWorldService.After creation of the
Class Library project the Solution name disappeared from Solution Explorer.
As a result of which I can now only add new items into the Class Library project but cannot add new item to the solution.
This appears to be a pretty old problem as I found it in another link on the internet.

It seems to be a bug.Has MS released a patch or a fix for this.

I am about to deploy an ASP .NET application (developed with LINQ-to-SQL). I have taken following precautions: Database access via user with limited access, however, since application is to access the sensitive data, I can't deprive this limited access user from it Database server is not exposed to external network - is hiding behind DMZ and all external ports are blocked I have done thorough security testing of the web-application; SQL Injections, rights management, illegal data access (via post/get data tempering) Application is operating on SSL
1 - I am using ASP .NET authorization API; any recommendation for avoiding session hijacking (in case someone some-how gets to know the session key). Is there are way to change the authentication cookie less prone to threats? Say like, changing it after every request? (I know I am get very conscious about this particular item)
2 - Data in the database is not encrypted. To make things ultra-secure, I am thinking about implementing transparent data encryption. Can someone share his/her experience or a link about implementing data level encryption with SQL Server 2008 along with pros-and-cons?
3 - Recommendation for storing connection string in web.config. Is using integrated security better then using encrypted database connection string?

I've build a custom server control inheriting from WebControl. Basically it is a kind of button. All is working perfectly except one thing: the PostBackUrl is inoperative.
I probably forgot to implement something. Actually I just added the property PostBackUrl. Probably I should also implement an interface of call something.

If I have something like the following:
<asp:TextBox id="test" runat="sever"></asp:TextBox>
<asp:RequiredFieldValidator runat="server" ControlToValidate="test"
ErrorMessage="Required"></asp:RequiredFieldValidator>
<asp:Label runat="server" id="lblStatus"></asp:Label>
if in the code behind, I set the label to "You must enter a value if the textbox is empty" to validate it on the server side and this is fine, but if javascript is enabled, I don't want to show the client side validation and the server side label together. Is this something where I would just have to disable the client-side validators if javascript was enabled?

I'm implementing a BLL layer and have a few questions. First, in my DAL, there is a contacts table, the select method is a sql query against a sql server 2000 database. The preview data returns everyting as expected. The query is

The BLL method is built like so
[Code]....
When using the BLL method to a gridview, the results of the subquery are not displayed. There are also other methods, each having a different where clause for ContactRole_ID and each is having the same issue of not displaying the subquery reult in the gridview. No error, but no data is displayed for the subquery either. Here is the templatefield of the gridview
[Code]....
Another item that is causing an error is in trying to update a record. Here is the DAL update method

And the BLL update method
[Code]....
The error says i have extra parameters, but have no clue where the extra parameters are being picked up. The error isObjectDataSource 'odsContacts' could not find a non-generic method 'UpdateContact' that has parameters: _ContactID, _Active, _ContactName, _Office, _VirtualOffice, _Pager, _Fax, _Home, _Cellular, _Email, _ContactRole_ID, Active, ContactRole_ID, ContactName, Office, Email, VirtualOffice, Pager, FAX, Home, Cellular.And the objectdatasource

We've got a client app which connects using TCP to a server. Additionally, the client app makes use of .NET remoting to talk to another piece of locally running code.
I'm tasked with creating a "Client Simulator" to do some testing, where we'd need to have 100's of clients connected simultaneously to the server. Ideally, this would work out great if I were to run each client in it's own space, such as a VM, but this is not logistically feasible.
how to handle this? Is there a tool that could do something like this? Or some sort-of .NET concept I could use?

I have a user control which contains a CustomValidator which is used according to whether a RadioButton is checked or not (there are several RadioButtons, I'm only showing the relevant one)
<asp:RadioButton runat="Server" ID="RadioBetween" GroupName="DateGroup" CssClass="date_group_options_control_radio" />
[code]...
There is some client + server side validation code (the server side code does exactly the same thing and is skipped for brevity)

function ValidateDateFields_Client(source, args) [code]...
There are two instances of this control in the page. When running the client side version it hits the wrong one (the version of the control which is disabled). You can see from the generated HTML both are correctly specified. I'm not sure how .NET works out which clientside function to call given they both have the same name.

//
var ctl00_MCPH1_QueryTextValidator = document.all ? document.all["ctl00_MCPH1_QueryTextValidator"] : document.getElementById("ctl00_MCPH1_QueryTextValidator");
[code]...
Do i need to add something in to scope it? What's the best way to achieve this? If I disable the loading of the second control everything works fine.

I'm building an n-tier application, with the web client and the class library separate. I'm also using the factory pattern of development, using interfaces to act as containers for different objects they are associated with. The problem I'm expreriencing is that I declared a public interface class in the class library and I can create an instance of it in in my aspx pages but whenever I declare it in my custom control code-side, i get an error, like so:
Error 20 The type or namespace name 'IContentMaker' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)
notge that I have inherited the class library namespace using the 'using' keyword just in case you are wondering. My code is like so:
using System.Web.UI.HtmlControls;
using System.Web.UI.WebControls;
using System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts;
using System.Xml.Linq;
using TQO_Classes ; //importing the class library project
public partial class PageContentMgr : System.Web.UI.UserControl
{
private IContentMaker _data; //this line throws the error, it works fine on aspx pages

When calling Response.Cookie.Add(new HttpCookie("MyCookie", "objValue")); where does the cookie saved? on Client Machine or Server Machine?
EDIT:if saved in Client Machine, how can I read it from javascript then? I tried this kind of script.
function getCookie(c_name) {
var i, x, y, ARRcookies = document.cookie.split(";");
for (i = 0; i < ARRcookies.length; i++) {
[code].....
I cannot get the cookie that I saved from code behind. When I look into the document.cookie object, it is just an empty string.
Scenario:On Page_Init() on code behind. I create a cookie using Response.Cookie.Add(new HttpCookie("MyCookie", "cookieValue"));.
On Client side, I'm trying to read the cookie saved from code behind on page load using the snippet above, but it returns undefined

Reposting my unanswered in technet.microsoft question?
MSDN "ASP.NET Delegation" article tells:
1) "When you configure to use a particular account as the process identity, ASP.NET attempts to delegate that account. If it is a local account that is identical (including password) to a local account on a remote machine, delegation is possible. If such an account does not exist on the remote machine, to the network it appears as the Windows anonymous account (NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON). In addition, delegation is also possible if the account is a domain account that has access to the remote machine, in which case it uses the domain network identity of that account."
The same frequently repeated story as in case of manually/interactively accessing remote computer (server resource) in workgroup - it is necessary to create local account with the same username, the same password. But why?
If a workgroup Windows client process cannot access resources on server machine without having duplicate of such (local) account on target machine already pre-created,does it mean that client (process, machine, or user) can access server resources only by/after having logged (opening logon session) into server machine? Or, how to understand that such access is impossible without having corresponding duplicate local account on server machine?
The same MSDN "ASP.NET Delegation" article tells:
"NetworkService account. It behaves the same as the System account. This account possesses the network credentials associated with the machine account (domainnamemachinename) in the domain of which it is a member"
Does not any Windows have accounts ((NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE)? as well as many other common pre-built accounts? Why are they installed (before any joining to domain) but cannot be used for remote network access and client identification ? And what is identity used when the process from workgroup Windows under identity ((NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE) accesses a remote server?
My related questions:
domained LocalSystem vs. non-domained LocalSystem account in Windows-es ? how to check group membership of an "NT AUTHORITY" account ? We have an UpdatePanel that is showing a gridview with loads of data in it. We have loads of well written sprocs that don't take very long, BUT we have a few horrible ones that take ages.
We do intend to rewrite them but in the interim we have put the ADO.NET commandtimeout up to 180s. The scriptManager.AsyncPostBackTimeout is set to 240s. We want to handle this on the serverside. One of the reports still fails (it's got a couple of nested cursors in it - someone who hasn't had SQL lesson 101 from me!).
Half the time, the nice error timeout message is shown using server side handling of the command timeout. The problem is that the other half of the time the commandtimeout doesn't seem to fire.
