MVC :: Trying To Setup A Base Product Class That Will Be Inherited By A More Specific Class Later?

Dec 16, 2010

In my MVC project, I am trying to setup a base product class that will be inherited by a more specific class later. Here is my scenario. I have a table called ProductBase, it contains three fields, BaseProductId(PK), CatalogNum, and ListPrice. Every product in the system will share these attributes. Next, I have a table called Shirt, with three fields BaseProductId(PK, FK), Color, and Size.

I then setup an Entity Data Model that pulled in both of these tables and created classes BaseProduct and Shirt. So, in my model, I want to do something like this:

[Code]....

The main problem I have with this, is that if I do any kind of condition on CatalogNum or ListPrice, then my performance goes to crap. One of the main things we will want to do is something like this:

[Code]....

This takes an enormous performance hit, and I suspect it is because the partial class above returns to the database for each shirt.

The other problem I have with this approach, is that I cannot force the properties for the Shirt. What if I make a change to the BaseProduct? What happens when I have multiple product types, will I have to repeat this code? I assume I will need to make a change with the entity data model, but I am unsure where to begin.

Output Html To Page In Inherited PageBase Class?

Sep 2, 2010

I've inherited (no pun intended) an old ASP.NET 1.1 project that is now .NET 3.5. It is designed with base class that inherits from PageBase. All of the subsequent aspx pages inherit from this custom pagebase. It currently works by generating a bunch of html text in LiteralControls for the headers and navigation bars and dropping it into an HtmlGenericControl (in this case called 'page'), which is then displayed on the page by using this.Controls.Add(page); This actually works, except for the following output:

<span>
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
<html>
...
</html>
</span>

Those span's aren't supposed to be there obviously, but they come from the HtmlGenericControl, which defaults to a tagName of span. This is causing some strange behavior in IE regarding centering controls on the page.

Basically I know I should be using masterpages for this type of thing, but I don't have time to switch this all over, and I'm not an ASP.NET expert yet to where I know exactly how to solve this problem. Is there another way of sending literal text directly to the HTML output without wrapping it in a control? Obviously I need the DocType to be the first thing on the page; nothing wrapping it.

Web Forms :: Master Page Controls Cause Null Reference Exceptions?

Mar 10, 2010

I've got a master page where I've created two content place holders ('menu content place holder' and 'main body content place holder'). I've placed several controls (drop down lists and a calendar) in one of these content place holders (the 'menu content place holder'). In my content page I've set the 'menu content place holder' to 'Default to Master page content'. In my 'main body content place holder' I've included several controls (table, labels) which depend on the user selected items in the 'menu content place holder'.

After including a reference in all the necessary places- like this:

DropDownList ddlList1 = Master.FindControl("ddlList1")
as
DropDownList;

I still get the following exception (this exception occurs in my content page):

An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details:System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Web Forms :: Onclick Event Giving Null Reference Exception?

let me see if I can explain this clearly. I have a gridview control

AJAX :: CalendarExtender Giving Error On Page . 'sys.extended.ui.textboxwrapper Is Null Or Not An Object'

Nov 27, 2010

I decided to use the CalendarExtender on a project and I converted it from VS 2005 to Web Developer 2010 Express. I initially added the AJAX toolkit for ASP.NET 4.0 and the calendar extender worked fine. However, I realised that the server didn't have ASP.NET 4.0 installed and I thought it would be simpler to add the toolkit for 3.5 instead and change the target framework to 3.5. I tried and then the CalendarExtender did't work at all. When you click the textbox nothing happens. There is the error on page - 'sys.extended.ui.textboxwrapper is null or not an object'

I tried switching the project back to 4.0 and using the other one and that no longer works for some reason. The same in 2008 Web Developer Express. I've clearly done something wrong along the way, but I can't work out what it is.

Here's the source for a page on a test Web Developer 2008 Express project.

How To Handle Exceptions In A 3-tier Web Application - Specifically Sql Database Exceptions

Jan 26, 2010

I'm building the standard 3-tier ASP.NET web application but I'm struggling as to where to do certain things - specifically handling exceptions.

I've tried to have a look around on the web for some examples but can't find any which go as far as a whole project showing how everything links together.

In my data-tier I'm connecting to SQL Server and doing some stuff. I know I need to catch exceptions that could be raised as a result but I'm not sure where to do it.

From what I've read I should be doing it in the UI tier but in that case I'm not sure how to ensure that the connection to the database is closed. Is anyone able to clarify how to do this? Also if anyone knows as to where I could find an example 3-tier web application that follows best practices that would be great too.

Distinguish Between Internal Exceptions And Real Exceptions?

Dec 9, 2010

We have a asp.net application and want to implement logging. The first idea was to use the Application_Error method in the global.asax file.

The problem is that ASP.NET very often seem to throw exceptions internally that are not caused by the application and which seem not to interfer with the users normal workflow. For example we often get HTTPExceptions, UnauthorizedAccessExceptions and others caught in this method, although there is no real error in the application.

Web Forms :: Class Object Becomes NULL After PostBack

Feb 13, 2014

I have a asp.net page titled EstMaterials.aspx with a gridview that fills from a SQL table based on a parameter passed to it.  The code for calling the form is below.

<asp:UpdatePanel ID="upAddMaterials" runat="server">
<ContentTemplate>
<div id="AddMaterials" style="text-align:center">

 I have an a button field set as a link in a gridview.  When the user clicks on the link it should open the "EstMaterials.aspx" page with a gridview listing the materials required for this job.  If I do not have a parameter i.e, ScheduleWeek.oJob.JobSeqNbr, the gridview fills fine.  However, with the parameter listed the gridview does not fill.  It appears the form opens without ever looking at the parameter being passed.The page load event is below.

Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
If Not IsPostBack Then
If Not IsNothing(ScheduleWeek.oJob) Then

Databases :: MySQL - CSharp To Assign Null Date Time To A Class Field?

I ran a SQL to fetch records from MySQL, this field is Time field in MySQL.

Got an exception inside the function:

ADO.NET :: Get Collections Of The Inherited Classes?

Sep 5, 2010

So I'm coding up a simple blogging/content application in MVC2. In my EF domain model I have an abstract entity named "Resource" which serves as a base class for any content that can be published. I have entities named "Picture", "BlogEntry" and "Event" which all inherit from "Resource".

My problem is, it seems it doesn't make collections for Pictures, BlogEntries and Events. I only have a collection of Resources. How can I get collections of the inherited classes? Is it something I'll have to create myself? If so, how?

Analyzing An Inherited Website Solution?

Jan 4, 2010

I have "inherited" an ASP.net 2.0 VB project and have been given a list of items the customer wants changed. This is not my original work, I've "inherited" it from another coder who went AWOL. The customer just wants the site to work, but has found a few issues that need to be changed. Unfortunately, the project is over budget and is about a year overdue. Thus, there's no time to update it to .Net 3.5.

I started using Reflector and have a fair understanding of the classes and methods defined. What techniques have you used when modifying an existing codebase? Do you re-create according to your practices and methodology, or try to adhere to what the previous coder did?
