C# - Initiate User Scope Class At Session Start?
Jun 16, 2010
I want to initiate a class for each user at the start of the user's session so that a single class can be used throughout the user's session. I checked out this post but I'm not sure where I should be placing this Sessionhandler class. Inside global.asax? How do I go about accomplishing this?

SessionStateModule raises a Start event with a new seesion. Is there a pointer to "deep dive" information?
In particular,
(1) I want to preserve Session state information across a postback to external (web-based) services in my VS 2008 development environment, but am finding that my code is triggering the creation of a new session.
(2) I am using IIS to host WCF Service calls, and it appears that many of those calls trigger the creation of a session. I would like to dive deeper into this, and try to manage (reduce) the number of sessions that are created and their behavior.

My ASP.NET intranet web application uses Windows Authentication, and I would like to record the following details:
1) Windows ID
2) Session Start Time
3) Session Stop Time
4) URL being browsed to (optional)
I've got some basic code setup in "Session_Start" method of the Global.ASAX to log session start times (seen below), but that's it so far. I have the feeling this is a primitive approach and there are "better" ways of doing this. So I really have two questions:
1) Is this the right way to go about doing this? If not what are some other options?
2) If this is the right way, do I just need to drop some code in the "Session_End" method to record the time they exit, and thats a complete solution? Does this method always get called when they close the browser tab they have the site open in, or do they have to close the entire browser (I don't have logout functionality)? Any way users can skip over this session end method (or start for that case)?
Dim connsql As New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("MyConnectionstring").ConnectionString)
Dim cmdsql As System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand = connsql.CreateCommand
cmdsql.CommandText = "BeginUserSession"
cmdsql.CommandType = Data.CommandType.StoredProcedure
Try
cmdsql.Parameters.Add("@windowsid", System.Data.SqlDbType.VarChar, 30, "windowsid")
cmdsql.Parameters("@windowsid").Value = Session("UserInfo").identity.name
If connsql.State <> System.Data.ConnectionState.Open Then connsql.Open()
cmdsql.ExecuteNonQuery()
connsql.Close()
Catch ex As Exception
Finally
If connsql.State <> Data.ConnectionState.Closed Then connsql.Close()
End Try
'Stored Proc records start time

I am looking for differences between those 3 ways of using static class in asp.net application scope.
Will all of these point to the same class?
Which one is preferable >object< defined declaratively inside global.asax or static class ?
examples:
<object runat="server" scope="application" class="classname" ID="objID"></object>
VS
public static class classname {}
VS
Application("a") = new classname();

Quick question: Is there a "per-user" data storage object (similar to Session) that I can store data in the global scope (similar to HttpRuntime.Cache)? Almost as if Session and HttpRuntime.Cache had a baby.
Full Background: I have a ASP.NET website that was originally written for a single thread. Now I changed it so that certain actions will spawn a background thread and the browser polls a service to get status updates.
The problem I am having with this is that certain pieces of data are stored into the HttpContext.Session[] object (membership authentication token, for example). These pieces of data need to be unique to each user and accessible to the background thread. Session is not available to the background thread.
I am aware of HttpRuntime.Cache but that would require micromanagement to segment out the users and to expire it at the same time the session is expired. Session, on the other hand, automatically expires this things at the right times that I want it too and is already used by things like the SqlMembershipProvider.
My question is, is there something that behaves similar to the Session but exists in the global scope?

I am trying to register the route collection in .net based on each session. The code I have works fine, you goto website/username and it loads the correct sub pages, but you have to restart the application to goto website/username2 to load those sub pages. But when the application is restarted the second one works, but then not the first one. Is there some way to create a different route collection per session not per application using system.web.routing.

We're using ASP.NET and IIS 6.0. I realise that the definitions of applications, websites and virtual directories are ill-defined in IIS 6, and changed a lot in IIS 7. However, I'm stuck with IIS 6.0 for now.
We have a single web site defined in IIS, and a number of separate sub-sites in Virtual Directories.
The scheme looks like this:-
[URL]
[URL]
site1, site2, ... are virtual directories in IIS 6.0, under the "Default Web Site".
I need to use ASP.NET sessions and forms authentication in most of these sites, and I don't want them to share authentication data or session information at all.
Both the mechanisms currently depend on cookies. However, the cookies created by default use the same name, and have a path of "/" in the browser, meaning the sites' cookies will clash with each other.
Without changing the default name for each cookie, how can I enforce separation between my sub-sites? Do I need to change the virtual directories for IIS 6 "Applications"? Or is there some way in code to enforce a more limited scope for the cookies?

I have an ASP.NET app that logs Audit reports using nHibernate's IPreUpdateListener. In order to set the current user in the Listener events, I was using System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent(). This works fine when debugging on my machine, but when I move it to the staging server, I'm getting the ASP.NET process credentials, not the requesting user.
In the ASP.NET page, I can use Request.LogonUserIdentity (which works fine since I'm using integrated authentication), but how do I reference this user directly without having to pass it directly to my event? I don't want to have to pass this info through the pipeline because it really doesn't belong in the intermediate events/calls.

How should one handle the situation where you may need to filter by a group of users.
Here is the scenario.
I have an administrator role in my company. I should be able to see all the data belonging to me plus all the other users who I have control over.
A plain old user however should only be able to access their own data.
If you are writing regular sql statements then you can have a security table with every user and who they have access too but i'm not sure how to handle this situation in the OO and ORM world.
Any one dealt with this scenario in a web application using an ORM?

What is the right approach when users (authenticated domain admins) should be able to start batch jobs (usually exe files) from an IIS (7.x) aspx (c#) page? This is an intranet site. The batch jobs have to run on the web server as Domain Admins. The website pool is executed by network service or some similar restricted account in AD.
Approaches I can think of (and their disadvantages):
1. Start exe file with System.Diagnostics.Process.Start with another account. This feature is disabled in IIS 7.x, how do I allow it?
2. Create a sheduled task and call scheduled task-api. This unmanaged dll is giving VS compiler warnings because it's unsafe to call from managed code.
3. I suppose there's a better approach, because the previous suggestions doesn't appear safe or robust.

i have 1 master page with 5 pages that call it. now on the master page, I have few dropdowns and textboxes, and the calling pages only have a small article in the corner. I want to start a session on page_load event, so that if the user chooses to select a dropdown or put data in textbox, even if he clicks on the other 4 links of other pages, the data should stay.

I have a class called EditMapUtilities. Here are some class properties that I want to persist:
public class EditMapUtlities
{
public static Boolean isInitialEditMapPageLoad
{
get { return SessionHandler.isInitialEditMapPageLoad; }
set { SessionHandler.isInitialEditMapPageLoad = value; }
}
// REST OF CLASS NOT GERMAIN TO DISCUSSION AND OMITTED
}
Here is my SessionHandler Class following the pattern from this post Static Session Class and Multiple Users:
using System.Web.SessionState;
public static class SessionHandler
{
private static HttpSessionState currentSession
{
get
{
if (HttpContext.Current.Session == null)
throw new Exception("Session is not available in the current context.");
else
return HttpContext.Current.Session;
}
}
//A boolean type session variable
private static string _isInitialEditMapPageLoad = "EditMapInitialPageLoad";
public static bool isInitialEditMapPageLoad
{
get
{
if (currentSession[_isInitialEditMapPageLoad] == null)
return true;
else
return (Boolean)currentSession[_isInitialEditMapPageLoad];
}
set
{
currentSession[_isInitialEditMapPageLoad] = value;
}
}
}
I am still learning OOAD. I want to keep relevant properties with relevant classes. I also want to keep all Session stored variables in one place for ease of maintenance and to encapsulate the session keys and calls. I feel like my design is too coupled though. How can I make it more loosely coupled? Is my editMapUtilities class too tightly coupled to the SessionHandler class? How would you do it better?

If i have N numbers of classes on each of them i am declaring for example property which contains some app setting values from config file.
public static IAppSettings AppSettings { get; set; }
I want to populate this property automatically when class is created.
I am thinking to achieve this goal using StructureMap.
I want to "say" somehow only in one place, that if class contain this property populate it.

I am building a dashboard where I am iterating through a list of controls to render, and I need to initiate a general callback both after each control and after they are all completed. I was curious what the best way to handle this is. I can get the control specific callback fired off by placing myUserControlCallback(); in the user control itself. I'm just not sure how to run something like allControlsRendered().
