C# - Javascript Event Like Window.onload For Subsequent Loads?
Feb 9, 2011
We have a function that changes the iframe height at the window.onload event so we can adjust it to the page contents. The problem is that after clicking in an asp:menu the height its restored to its default and the window.onload event doesnt fire...so we need the event that would fire in subsequent loads (tried window.unload but didnt trigger)
The resize function cant be called on the asp:menu click because the window wouldnt have finished loading so the height calculation would fail...

I have the following download request in javascript:
var exportWindow = window.open('Download.ashx?source=1', '');
exportWindow.onload = function() {
alert('finished');
};
My problem is that the above alert box does not appear. The download.ashx sets up the following response (which will be saved as a csv file), which works fine.
context.Response.ClearContent();
context.Response.ContentType = "application/text";
context.Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename="" + fileName + """);
context.Response.Write(resultWriter.ToString());
context.Response.Flush();
context.Response.Close();
If I replace the download.ashx with a normal aspx page, then the alert appears. So my question would be: is it possible to know programatically when the dowload.ashx returned with a response?(using FF3)

I have a LinkButton which fires an OnClick event to update some Labels; however, after the first firing of OnClick, it won't fire again when I click another (or the same) LinkButton which runs the same OnClick event. (It's a list of people, each a LinkButton, and clicking on one brings up their details)
If I leave the page a few minutes, it will work again, almost as if whatever was preventing OnClick firing timed-out. Of course, this won't be any use to the users!
This is my ASP.NET code for the LinkButtons (encapsulated in a DataList):
[Code]....
All the connections work, the data is retrieved, etc, so everything except the OnClick firing works. I've done a search of the internet and the forum, and found this seems to have been a long-standing problem since the first ASP.NET, but there is no solution for ASP.NET 3.5. Does anyone know what causes this, or where I might be going wrong?

I am using a CustomValidator in ASP.NET as follows:
<asp:CustomValidator ID="cvComment" ControlToValidate="txtComment" Display="None"
EnableClientScript="true" ClientValidationFunction="validateComment"
runat="server" ></asp:CustomValidator>
And this is the function that gets called:
function validateComment(source, args) {
var reComment = new RegExp("^[a-zA-Z0-9',!;?@#%*.s]{1,1000}$");
var validComment = reComment.test(window.event.srcElement.value);
if (!validComment)
alert("The comment has illegal characters");
args.IsValid = validComment;
}
Upon clicking the button that triggers the validator, the application breaks and I can see that the window.event property is null, so obviously there's a null reference trying to match the regEx. My question is why could the window.event be showing up as null? I could've sworn this was working before.
EDIT:
I have modified the function as such:
var check = document.getElementById(source.id);
var checky = check.attributes["controltovalidate"].value;
var checkyo = document.getElementById(checky);
var validHour = reOutHour.test(checkyo.value);
if (!validHour)
alert("The time is incorrectly formatted");
args.IsValid = validHour;
Now this is working on Internet Explorer, but not on Firefox...

I have set up in javascript:
var onBeforeUnloadFired = false;
window.onbeforeunload = function (sender, args)
{
if(window.event){
if(!onBeforeUnloadFired) {
onBeforeUnloadFired = true;
window.event.returnValue = 'You will lose any unsaved changes!'; //IE
}
}
else {
return 'You will lose any unsaved changes!'; //FX
}
windows.setTimeout("ResetOnBeforeUnloadFired()", 1000);
}
function ResetOnBeforeUnloadFired() {
//Need this variable to prevent IE firing twice.
onBeforeUnloadFired = false;
}
I'm trying to achieve an edit screen where the user is warned before navigating away. It works fine except I get the pop up for normal post backs of button clicks. I'm hoping to avoid this so I'm figuring if I could determine which button was pressed it would work. Does anybody know how to determine which button was pressed in the indows.onbeforeunload? Alternatively anyone know a better approach to what I'm trying to achieve?

I have a DropDownList that fires off some server-side databinding in its OnSelectedIndexChanged event.
<asp:DropDownList ID="ddlGroup" runat="server"
AutoPostBack="True" OnSelectedIndexChanged="SelectGroup" />
Elsewhere in the page, some JavaScript opens a popup. When the popup is filled out and submitted, I want to use JavaScript to fire that OnSelectedIndexChanged event in the opener page. I found some other code that does something similar:
if (window.opener != null ) {
var cf = window.opener.document.forms['aspnetForm'];
if (!cf) {
cf = window.opener.document.aspnetForm;

So I have an .aspx page loading up and populating drop downs based on a lookup table in the database. What we want is for the user to be able to configure which of these values comes defaulted by specifying that value in a drop down somewhere else in the app. Now, it's easy to default the "first" value, or something like that, but we want this to act differently. Is there a JavaScript function that can run immediately after onLoad (so the drop downs are populated already), that can go through the drop down and make one of those default so it looks like the page is loading with that set as default and people don't realize the workaround? (weird masking, etc.) I'm not TOO experienced with JavaScript so something like this may already exist. Here is an example of how we add the dropdown control to the page, in case you guys even need that.
With CType(.AddControl(New Controls.ComboBox("CodeId", "../../../../CodeId", "Code")), Controls.ComboBox)
.ForceSelection = True
.ValueField = "LookupID"
.DisplayField = "LookupDesc"
.Validate.AllowBlank = False
.ForceSelection = True
.ReadOnly = EditControl.IsFieldReadOnly(10580)
.BindData(Model.Codes)
End With

In my page Load event of default. how can I wait until the java script in Master is done? Or is the a better place to put these events?

We are writing a portal and like every portal we store html data in Db fro Modules. So I thought that I can cache each module in files. I use OnLoad event to check if there is a cache file for this Module, use that and else create cache file:
if (!IsPostBack)
{
string Path = AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory + "CacheModules" + ModuleId + ".dat";
if (File.Exists(Path))
{
Controls.Clear();........

<iframe id="IframeSubsectionArea" scrolling="auto" width="100%" onload="resizeIframeToFitContent(this)" runat="server">
However it is throwing the error as the method could not be found in the form. Is there any client side script variant for the onload event? May i know,What might be the reason for the error and its solution?

I am working on ASP.NET 3.5, c#, visual studio 2010. I have made a master file and a default page that uses this master file. I have placed a couple asp:contentplaceholders in the master and corresponding code in the page that uses this master. I have also inserted JavaScript like this in the content page (and not the master):
<asp:Content ID="Content6" ContentPlaceHolderID="Mainpage" Runat="Server">
<script src="path1" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script src="path2" type="text/javascript"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function () {
var options = {
//some java code
};
$(".mycssclass").effect(options);
});
</script>
</asp:Content>
On running the website I get the following runtime error in visual studio: Microsoft JScript runtime error: 'this.node' is null or not an object and it point to some function inside the JavaScript like this.node.onload=function(){..............//I am not a java guy so do not know much about this Where am I going wrong? Why does the site compile correctly but throw this runtime error? I also tried inserting this java code inside the master file in the <head>, but same error.

ASP.Net web forms, .NET 2.0
I have a dilemma. I have an aspx page that has a custom control:
<def:CustomControl ID="customID" runat="server" />
The custom control can be added multiple times to the ASPX page if certain criteria is met:
<asp:Repeater runat="server" ID="options" OnItemDataBound="options_OnItemDataBound">
<HeaderTemplate>
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%">[code]...
In the code behind of the aspx page, I wanted to append a event (OnSelectedItemChange) to the dropdown control that isn't actually on the ASPX page (yet). However, when I try to do something like the following in the code behind:
foreach(Control eachControl in customID.Controls) {
if (eachControl.HasControls) {
Control DdControl = eachControl.FindControl("optionValues"); //always null
[code]....
But All that eachControl has is a repeater, and it shows its childcontrol count as 0. So when it get to the FindControl method, it always returns null.
QUESTION.So what I am trying to do is add an event (OnSelectedItemChange) to the dropdownlist control inside the repeater (which is a custom control that gets added to the page if criteria is met). When a selection is made in the drop down, I want it to trigger the Event method.
How can I either: A) Find a way to add the event if the dropdownlist control exists on the page?
OR
B) A way to be able to call a method in the code behind and pass the selections from all the drop down lists (since the custom control could be added more than once creating multiple drop downs?
NOTE I don't have the code in front of me, so if I have something syntactically incorrect, please overlook. I also know that ID's are unique, so this is also assumed to be a problem with my logic. When it renders these, the ID's might be mangled by the asp name convention which I would assume I have to find a way around.

In my global.asax file for my ASP.net project, I am checking for certain conditions. When those conditions are met, I want to automatically execute javascript code when the page runs.
This is my code:
if condition Then
Response.Write(" < script type=""text/javascript"" > ")
Response.Write(" // Javascript code to do stuff ")
Response.Write(" < /script > ")
End If
While this appears to work to execute the Javascript code, I don't think it's a best practice because this code will preceed all of the HTML of the page that gets loaded.
What is the best way of programmatically tacking on some extra Javascript code to be run when my page loads?

I'm trying to update values from a xml file into textboxes. I have this javascript being called in the Page_Load event
this.Page.ClientScript.RegisterStartupScript(this.GetType(), "Script", sb.ToString(), true);
I click the continue button which does a post back but the values are not updated until I refresh the page again which makes me think the js isn't being run until after the page is returned. I'm wondering how to have the values updated when the page is refreshed after the button postback.

I am creating a browsergame in ASP.NET (using AJAX, jQuery, ect. - NO Flash). In this game I need to play some sound files. Right now I have those files as .WAV, but if the solution can play .MP3, that is preferred.I have several events during the game which need sounds: You hit the monster, you die, you level up, ect. The page is based upon update panels, which means I will have to add several sounds (and replay them at specific events) without a postback. As some of the sounds is replayed every 3-5th second and others are played way more rare, it has to be efficient to this requirement.What would be the best and most efficient solution to solve this? :-)
