Security :: Login Contols And A Web Service - Web Service To Do The Membership Authentication And Authorization?

Jan 23, 2010

I am writing two ASP.NET apps. One is a web service that provides xml data and the other is a web client that will use the service to display and manipulate data. I would like for the web service to do the membership authentication and authorization. Is there any way to simply point the login controls in my client application to the web service instead of to a database. I assume I would have to provide the necesarry methods in my web service interface, which would then use the membership provider database I created and pass the results back through to the client.

Is this possible? I have seen many articles on security provisioin from a web service but none has really been what I am looking for. I was hoping that, since my service and my client are both written in ASP.NET, there might be some built functionality that would benefit me.

Can Login With Forms Authentication And Then Transfer That 'login' To A PHP Application

Mar 7, 2011

Our website runs on ASP.NET v4 and users log in user Forms authentication.

We are considering purchasing a web application that will add to our services. The only problem is that this new website is written in PHP.

We would like users to login to our ASP.NET site and then navigate to the PHP site. The PHP site should notice that users are logged-in though. So we probably need to transfer the ASP.NET SessionID cookie and somehow use that to verify whether or not the user has been authorized.

Authentication - One Login System For Multiple Apps?

Mar 4, 2011

We have a server with lets say 5-10 internal ASP.NET (MVC) applications running in separate application pools as separate websites (on different ports and/or subdomains). I know nothing about the built-in ASP.NET authentication framework, so I was wondering if anyone could drop me a quick pointer in the right direction...

I want to secure all of the internal apps via one login mechanism (supporting 3-5 different roles; nothing complex). This login system would be another app/website running on the server, and to gain access to any other app, one must have authenticated via the one login system and the target app must be able to see the user's role. The internal apps will be modified at the code level to plug into this new login system (in other words, we'll modify the current apps to support the authentication).

The whole point of this is that I don't want each app to have its own login/authentication mechanism, but rather use a more "global" authentication system (everything on the same server). I am not looking for anything complex (just a company of 15-25 employees, 3-5 departments - each user must be associated with a department (role) based on their login - and each app will be tuned to show the user the appropriate data based on his role).

The question is - how do I make it so that a user's authentication status is visible across all of the different apps (in different assemblies and running separately)?

Security :: Login Form Rejecting Valid Login With Forms Based Security And Membership Service

Jan 21, 2010

I've set up a system with forms based authentication and using the asp:Login control. When I put in an invalid password I get the approriate invalid password message. However when I put in a valid password, it does nothing...just returns to the login page again. I'm triple checked the login info. There is no error message, and the invalid attempts counter doesn't increment. When I put a break point in the Login_LoggedIn event of the Login form, it hits it, but User.Identity.IsAuthenticated is false. I'm not 100% sure it should be true at this point, as I'm pretty new to .NET but it seems kind of odd.

My user database is stored in a sqlserver 2005 db that already existed. I've added a new connection for it.In the authorization I have

<authorization>deny
users="?"/><authorization>

Designing System With Presentation Layer And Web Service Based API

Oct 19, 2010

We are designing a system that has functionality that is essentially the same at the presentation layer and the exposed API layer. My question is what technique / strategy to use so we can get the most reuse out of our code with performance in mind? Here's a simplified example: A user can add a Customer via a web form. This will fire the Customer.Create() method. An API consumer / user can add a Customer via a SOAP / HTTP-POST to a web service which will call the Customer.Create() method.

Imagine these layers:
PRESENTATION
|
|
WEB SERVICE API (Customer.Create() is available here
|
|
FACADE Business Object Interface - Customer.Create() signature is here
|
|
BUSINESS Business object - Customer.Create method() is fleshed out here
|
|
DATA ACCESS - Writes data

The presentation layer SOAP calls the Create() web method, which calls the facade's Create() method which calls the business object's Create() method which wires via the data access layer.

Questions:

Is there a concern about performance in using the API's web services in our presentation layer, or are there alternatives to connect the presentation layer directly to the facade? If so, what technology to use (WCF, Remoting, Web Services, etc)?

Select Login Page For Forms Authentication Based On Custom Rules?

Nov 18, 2010

i have a web site that uses forms authentication. the problem is that i have the site installed multiple times on the same production servers because i need to have a few different login pages (based on the domain in this case). after the domain specific login page, the rest of the site is the same. obviously, this requires a lot of maintenance as each new version has to be installed multiple times on the server (with varying the login page in the web.config file).

so i thought is there a way to install the site on 1 folder on the disk, have a web site on the IIS take in all the needed domains and make some http module (or some other solution) in which i could give it a list of domains and the forms authentication for that domain. this way make the login page used by each site change according to the domain while still having only one site to maintain on the server.

Security :: Application Using AD Form Authentication - Login Not Responding

Aug 23, 2010

I've encountered a problem with intranet ASP.NET Application using AD Form Authentcation. The login and authorization is built using this KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316748. It works fine on DEV but not in UAT and PROD.

Basically, the problem is:1. In DEV, users see login page and they enter domain user name and password and login process happens with no issue.

2. But in PROD and UAT, the same application when the users see the login page (first time) and they submit the login form no response. The login button does nothing. The user closes the browser and come back to login page and it works second time. Strange, this doesn't happen in DEV.

3. Further, on DEV by changing the LDAP path to PROD or UAT, the users can still login the first time. It's only the PROd and UAT that seems to be a problem. Not sure whether it's IIS setting or domain policy or something else.....

Not sure what's causing this issue. The only difference that I can see between DEV and UAT/PROD is:

1. DEV has no load balance but UAT and PROD has.

2. In DEV application is installed under Default Website and on PROD/UAT it's under new website.

The IIS settings has been setup as per given KB. I

I am referring to this article as a tutorial.

what is the cause of this and is there another approach I should take when I leverage ASP.NET authentication from Winforms?

I needed information regarding the capabilities & integration of AzMan tool with Asp.net.Currently, I got a Sharepoint 2007 website along with ASP.NET 2008 where I am using Form Based Authenication. Now, the requirement is any user within a domain registered in AD should be able to login in website through intranet.

C# - Convert The Standard Login Framework That Ships With MVC 2 Into A Modal Login Dialog System

Oct 17, 2010

I'm trying to find an example of how to convert the standard login framework that ships with ASP .NET MVC 2 (the account controllers and views, etc) into a modal login dialog system, like the one at Digg. After searching for hours, the closest tutorial I found was this: [URL]

However, there are a few modifications I'd like to make to it--such as, if there is a validation error, instead of displaying it inline on the form (ex: <%: Html.ValidationMessageFor(m => m.UserName) %>), I want to slide down a bar at the top of the page like Twitter/Digg. I'm not sure how to make use of the existing authentication framework to access the validation errors in javascript.

Security :: Allow Clients To Login To Website And Connect To Specific Server Based On Login

Jul 5, 2010

We have created a windows application which is distributed amongst our clients. The application uses SQL Server 2008 as the back end and each client uses their own database on their own server. The databases are all exactly the same but each clients data is specific only to them.

We would like to offer our clients the ability to log-in to our website which would then login to their own database so that when they are out in the field they can perform similar tasks to what they can do with the windows app. Each of the clients databases has a user table containing their login details, permissions etc.

Our server is running on IIS and has SQL Server 2008 installed but it only contains our data and nothing of the clients. How should we go about this?

What I mean is do we need to make each client have an additional login to our main server which would then hold each clients individual connection strings etc which would then be used to connect to there specific database and then they would need to login again?? Seems like a nightmare for the user.

Security :: Secured Site Using The Login Control / Do Not Want Them Redirected Based On Their Login Status?

Mar 24, 2011

I am doing a simple secured site using the login control. I would like users to be redirected to their dashboard page once they log in, but after that if they choose to browse I do NOT want them redirected based on their login status. I am using the generic template provided in VWD with the basic login setup in the template including the tabbed ASP menu control - nothing fancy, nothing custom. This is intended to be something very simple and quick. Here is the code I am using for the page load...

[Code]....

So if I do this code WITHOUT the "IsPostBack", logged in users are always redirected to their dashboard and cannot see the hompage. However with that IsPostBack test, the redirect after initial login doesn't work.

I know this is extremely basic and simple, but I am restarting with this stuff after a year away, and I need a nudge.
