C# - MVC 2 - Force User To Select A Value For A Non-nullable Type?
Aug 10, 2010
I have (or so I think!) a simple problem.
I will greatly simplify my model to speed this along.
I have a model class lets call it item:
public class Item
{
[Required(ErrorMessage="Must indicate if product is to be tracked by serial number.")]
public bool TrackedBySerial { get; set; }
}
I have an "Add" view where I create a DropDownList like so:
<%= Html.DropDownListFor(model=>model.TrackedBySerial, new SelectList(new List<object> {null,true,false},null),"Select One") %>
<%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.TrackedBySerial) %>
My problem is that unless I create my boolean value in the model to be a nullable type, I can't force the blank default value.
If I use the Html.DropDownList() instead of DropDownListFor() , is there any way for me to use ModelState.IsValid -- or do I need to mix my own custom validation in my controller as well?
Update: So I got the functionality I was looking for, its just a bit more verbose than I'd have liked. Is there a better way to do this?
Controller:
[HttpPost]
public ActionResult Add(InventoryItem newItem)
{
try
{
//get the selected form value
string formVal = Request.Form["TrackBySerial"];
//convert to true, false, or null
bool? selectedValue = TryParseNullable.TryParseNullableBool(formVal);
//if there is no value, add an error
if (!selectedValue.HasValue).....
view:
<div class="editor-field">
<%=Html.DropDownList("TrackBySerial","- Select One- ") %>
<%=Html.ValidationMessage("TrackBySerial") %>
<%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.TrackedBySerial) %>
</div>

I have 2 Dropdown(say "DD1", "DD2") and 1 Listbox(say "LB") in my web form,value of the 3 controls depend on each other.
"LB1" is dependent on "DD2" value, "DD2" is dependent on "DD1" value.
I want that if user selects "LB1" without selecting "DD2", it should give a message that "please select DD2 first"similarly if user Selects "DD2" without selecting "DD1", it should give a msg that "Please select DD1 first" ,using ASP.NET C.

I am making a website to store invoices so i can mail them to clients. So i got a table for clients, invoices and one with invoice products/services. When an invoice has no products/services added to them and it returns null i get the error "the null value cannot be assigned to a member with type System.Decimal which is a non-nullable value type."
I just started with linq. Before i always used mysql. Mostly i just had to call data from 1 table so forgive me if my linq query isn't really correct.
Dim invoices = From i In db.invoices _
Group Join p In db.products On i.id Equals p.invoiceId Into invoiceProducts = Group _
Select New With {i.client.naam, i.titel, (From iP In invoiceProducts Select iP.prijs).Sum}
i show the client's name, the title of the invoice and the total amount the clients will need to pay for products and services.

I have to select checkboxes besed on group column values. If you see below gridview, column 3 (GroupNo) has 1,1,1,1,2,2,2,2....etc (this column data is not static, will change based on page index. i.e PageIndex =2 may starts with 7,7,7,8,8,8,8,8,9,9,9 etc).
In every sectio/Group User must and should select minimun 2 check boxes. so If user select only one check box we need to show a pop up message as " select One more check box in that particular section" If User skips the message and move to next section we have to show the same message. We have to force the user to select more than one checkbox in the same section.
Mainly our intention is the check boxes whatever user selected in each section/Group belongs to one Category.

I have a question regarding routing and an issue that I am currently having in my application. I have an action, providers/List/, which accepts two parameters, a zipCode and a page value for paging results. I have defined this route as follows in my global.asax, /providers/{zipCode}/{page}
I have created another action in this controller, Dashboard, which does not expect any parameters, so I am assuming that the route would ultimately be /providers/dashboard, if I am not mistaken. What is happening is that for some reason I am getting a routing error regarding zipCode not being a non-nullable type. It makes me think that the first action's route is what is getting hit instead of going to the dashboard action. I am sure that it has something to do with the route entry that I have made in my global.asax file.

I've written the following Extension Method
<Extension()>
Public Function ToUtcIso8601(ByVal dt As Date) As String
Return String.Format("{0:s}Z", dt)
End Function
But I also need a Nullable version of the same method... how exactly do I do this?
This is what I was thinking, but I'm not sure if this is the right way

I have a problem:
I've created usual Controller and View(Edit view) for editing my Entity (EntityFramework)
Here is view example:
<div class="editor-field">
@Html.EditorFor(model => model.BirthDate)
@Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.BirthDate)
</div>
BirthDate is Nullable<DateTime>
but during loading my View I get this exception
The model item passed into the dictionary is null, but this dictionary requires a non-null model item of type 'System.DateTime'.
That's because of BirthDate is null in database but it is nullable and I expect that it just leaves the filed empty.
And I have Shared EditorTemplate:
@model System.Nullable<System.DateTime>
@if (Model.HasValue)

Have a GridView with a templated select button hidden and using
e.Row.Attributes.Add("onclick",Page.ClientScript.GetPostBackEventReference(this.grdMaster, "Select$" + e.Row.RowIndex.ToString())); to select a row .
When user like to update the datasource he will select one row from gridview then in selected indexchanged event i would display the selected row values beneath the form under the grid , Then user will update the contents displayed from grid and click an update button which is outside the grid . After updating the displayed row , i got to get the values of the next row in the grid and display them for next updation , i'e if users maually selects row 3 from grid then he can update the values using the update button and then on update click itself i'll have to display next row contents of row 4 and this process could go on .

I want to force the user to change his password after his first login. Now, where should I put the redirection code to ChangePassword page ?
If I put it in the Page_Load of Default page, user can move to any page because he is Authenticated. If I put it in the Page_Load of Master page, the ChangePassword page uses the same master page, and it'll enter in an infinit loop of redirections.
I though of ignoring the redirection if the Page is the ChagePassword page from the Master page, and I found this answer which says:
This sounds like a bad idea to start with. The idea of the master is that it shouldn't care what page is there as this is all common code for each page.

Can any one let me know about the below issue. I have a page which has three labels, say startdate,enddate and username. My issue is if the user doesnot select any of the above three then a message gets displayed as "Please select one search criteria" or if the user doesnot enter the date in correct format then i dispaly "Please enter date in mm/dd/yy" format. But what is happening is first time if the user doesnot select any then "Please select one search criteria" is getting displayed and after this message gets displayed if the user enters wrong format of date then both the messages are displayed.

I am looking for a way to distroy the ASP.net membership session for a specific user. The reason I am doing this is as an admin I want to delete a user. This works fine, but if the user already has an active session, he is still marked as "online" until this session dies (I verify each time by using Current.User.Identity.IsAuthenticated). How do I go about killing a session based on the user it's authorized as. This way when I do Memberships.DeleteUser(username) I can also do Sessions.KillByUser(username)[URL]

I have a basic website with a member login page and an administration backend area. I am using ASP.NET Membership tables for authentication.
When a member logs in they are authenticated and have access to their member profile and other related member areas.
If a user logs in and I detect they are in the ADMINISTRATOR role then a link to access the admin area of the site is available.
When the admin clicks this admin link the site redirects to SSL HTTPS protocal and is suppose to send the admin to the Administrtion area of the site.
[code]....
How can I force the user to remain logged in when switching to HTTPS from HTTP?
