C# - Recreating "Font" Property Behavior?
Jun 25, 2010
Controls that inherit off of System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebControl have a property called Font. The type is System.Web.Ui.WebControls.FontInfo.
When working with these controls in the designer, it breaks out the Font property into multiple properties like Font-Bold, Font-Italic, etc. When working with these same WebControls in the codebehind, there's only a Font property (no Font-Bold, Font-Italic, etc).
How can this behavior be manually recreated when creating WebControls? Specifically, what combination of System.ComponentModel attributes can show/hide these properties in Intellisense?

I'm trying to learn ASP.NET 3.5 from a book using Visual Web Developer 2008 Express. I've come across a curiosity. The book had me create a Label control and wanted me to change some of the Font properties. I went to the Properties window and saw a heading for Font with a plus sign next to it. I click on the plus sign and the sub-properties for font appear. So far, so good.
When I did the next exercise in the book, it had me create a new Web page with another Label control, and it wanted me to change the Font property again. But, this time when I went to the Properties window, I did not see a Font heading with a plus sign. I simply saw all of the Font sub-properties.

Is it possible to change the font and font size of the data in the dropdown of a Combobox?
I've tried;
.CustomComboBoxStyle .ajax__combobox_itemlist li {
width: 150px;
font-family:Verdana;
font-size:smaller;
}
and setting the CssClass to it, but doesn't affect the font. I can adjust the width of the dropdown object, but I need to change that gawd awful font.

Just upgraded from SSRS 2005 to 2008 (on a test server). I have a report with a list and in this list are about a dozen fields in textboxes whose fonts are all set to Verdana 8pt. When I run the report from the Report Manager, one of the 12 fields is displaying in a serif font (like Times New Roman) at around 12pt. When I preview the report in Visual Studio every field looks fine and when I run the same report in SSRS 2005 every field looks fine. Has to be a SSRS 2008 bug!

Figure there is a simple solution to this problem but I have been unable to find it.I have databinding in an ASP.Net application to a GridView. This gridview is bound to an ObjectDataSource as per standard usage.The problem I have is that one of my bound fields uses the property DataFormatString="{0:C}" and due to the currency format being displayed when an update is attempted and the object recreated I get a error as such "$13.00 is not a valid value for Decimal."Clearly this is a result of the column using a FormatString and then attempting to bind it back to a decimal property I have in my object called UnitPrice.I am assuming there is some markup I can set that can specify how the value is translated back?For anyone curious the solution ended up looking like this...
<asp:TemplateField>
<HeaderTemplate>
UnitPrice

point me to information regarding getting font metrics from a true type font in C#? I need to split some text from an RSS feed for a given box height and width.
I've checked System.Drawing.Font and GetHeight is there but how do I get the width of a character?
I understand each character is rendered as a glyph but not sure which class will get the width of the character?

For every row in my 'table' I am manually creating, there must be a LinkButton to delete a database row that matches a column in the table. Because no 2 controls can have the same name, I've had to use a GUID to name them so they're all unique.
Problem is, right now when I click Delete, the page posts back with no changes, but I've been told that I need to recreate the controls - but how do I recreate them in Page_Load when their ID's are randomly generated? Here's my code:

I'm trying to create a dynamic table (inside a gridview) with some objects. The initial creation is fine, and I store all the selectedindexes in viewstate to recreate it upon postback. This, seemingly, works fine as well, but...After the postback, when I get into the selectindexchanged even handler, I can see the new selectedindex, but the original control sending it is reset to it's initial value (because I reset them upon postback).Anyone know a fance way of doing this?Here's my code:

I have several usercontrols which are loaded based on business logic.However, all of them have webcontrols whose selected/entered value needs to be accessible in parent page on an event.Since there can be any combination of UserControls, I do not want to load all the UserControls in the Parent Page, since they are heavy.
I would like to load only those controls which are supposed to appear on the page, yet access the value from the usercontrol which caused the postback. (I would rather not access using Request.Form) (ViewState is open, but unsuccessful to store value in parent page's viewstate in onClick)Here is a sample scenario
Page: Home
Dynamically Loads: UserControls1
UserControls has TextBox tb and Button btn, causing onClick
When btn is clicked, I want to get value of tb in parent page on PostBack, Page creates UserControl2

I've been having several doubts with how fileupload control works internally. I've been trying to implement some kind of progress bar with iframes and such but I have noticed that when a local file is selected in the fileupload control and a postbackoccurs the file content is sent to the server wheter you choose save it or not.I have tested this with some examples and postback time seems to be the same in both cases, and the only difference is the time the servers needs to write the file on disk through the "FileUpload.SaveAs()" method.

I have a test site that is using the sqlprovidermembership. It is now working as expected. one of our clients has a site that was written in PHP. They created a link to our test site and when you click on one of there menu items it places the login page in a frame on there site for instance (http://www.client.com/staff.php). Now when the user enters their username and password the validation does not work. It simply continues to bring up the login page. it does not even say that they login was unsuccessful.

when I try to change the Behavior component's id in $create() I receive an exception when running the web page with the component control on it:
Microsoft JScript runtime error: Sys.InvalidOperationException: The id property can't be set on this object.
how then to change the Behavior's id? I know it is impossible to change the id of a Sys.UI.Control component, but the web control I created has a Behavior client side API.

However in firefox if I click on the dropdown, it get expanded, now if i type some charcter, relevant value get selected, now if i click out side the dropdown anywhere on my page, dropdown collpased, new value is shown as selected but no post back occurs. I even put a client side function to call on change of value, but that also didn't get called. However if i again click on my page post back occurs and selectedindexchanged event of that dropdown is called.

I need to use a field of 64 bits (32 is not long enough). I used the following page to see the effects of bit shifting when using the Int64 data type:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
<%@ Page Language="VB" WarningLevel="1" Explicit="true" Strict="true" %>
<script language="VB" runat="server">
private sub do_test()
dim bit_no as Integer
dim info as Int64
' Show min value as binary ...
info = Int64.MinValue
response.write( String.Format( "Int64.MinValue = {0}<br>", info ) )
response.write( String.Format( "Int64.MinValue (binary) = {0}<br>", Convert.ToString( info, 2 ) ) )
response.write( "<br>" )
' Show max value as binary ...
info = Int64.MaxValue
response.write( String.Format( "Int64.MaxValue = {0}<br>", info ) )
response.write( String.Format( "Int64.MaxValue (binary) = {0}<br>", Convert.ToString( info, 2 ) ) )
response.write( "<br>" )
response.write( "Bit Shift Test" )
response.write( "<br>" )
for bit_no = 0 to 63
info = 1 << bit_no
response.write( String.Format( "1 << {0} = {1}<br>", bit_no, info ) )

I'm doing the first bit of web-page development I've done in years, in VS2008, using VB.net. I have a fairly simple layout, which is using several nested tables. IE6 displays the layout just fine, but Firefox for some reason shows the whole thing in a small panel at the top of the page, with a scrollbar.

try to figure out what is wrong with my code but I'm lost. I've a ModalPopupExtender, triggered in code behind by the onClick event link button. The FIRST time I display my popup, it works well and if I close my popup using javascript, it works and I can get my popup back by clicking on my linkbutton again. But, if I click the "Save" button of my popup (which save data and close the popup), I can't get my popup to display again. Even if I close my popup first using javascript and then calling my server side code to save my data, the result is the same, I can't display my popup again. Seems like the postback "break" it.This popup is in an conditinal UpdatePanel and event trying to manually update the panel after the popup.show() method change nothing.Finally, I checked what server sent back to the browser using firebug and I can confirm that I received only view state information (no UpdatePanel to update), even after calling panel.Update().

I would like to update the content of a div using the result from an action method which returns a PartialView. The below code would do just this.
<%= Ajax.ActionLink("Update", "Comments", new { id = 1 }, new AjaxOptions { UpdateTargetId = "divComments" })%>
<div id="divComments" />
public ActionResult Comments(string id)
{
...
return View(photo.Comments);
}
Is it possible to have this update occur from inside a javascript method rather than from a link on the page?

I upgraded from 3.5 to 4.0 and noticed links in my subdomain behave differently - they still work, but add a redundant folder - for example: sub.mysite.com/sub/mypage.aspx. In 3.5 it was: sub.mysite.com/mypage.aspx. The code is thus: asp:HyperLink NavigateUrl="~/mypage.aspx"... The sub folder is a root in IIS7. Is there some way to avoid the second /sub/ showing in the broswer address bar so it looks like it used to in 3.5? Is there something I should place in my 4.0 web.config file?

In a base class object, I have an overridable subroutine that I would like all derived objects to have the ability to include. However, they don't have to, and if it's not necessary for them to use it, I don't want them to be forced to declare it. To enforce this, I've left the default behavior empty. For example, here's my whole sub:
Protected Overridable Sub MySubroutine(ByVal someObject As Object)
End Sub
Is this bad practice? I don't want to declare it as MustOverride, but I don't want default behavior. Is there a "better" way of doing this, or is this perfectly acceptable? I don't want to be that hack programmer... just trying to learn :)
