C# - Saving Multiple Items Per Single Database Cell?
May 13, 2010
i have a countries list. Each user can check multiple countries. Once saved, this "user country list" will be used to get whether other users fit into countries certain user chose.
Question is what would be the most efficient approach to this problem...
I have one, one to save user selection as delimited list like Canada,USA,France ... in single varchar(max) field but problem with it would be that once user from Germany enters page i perform this check on. To search for Germany i would be needed to get all items and un-delimit each field to check against value or to use sql 'like' which again is pretty damn slow...
Just to make sure, many users will have their own selections of countries from which and only they want to have users to land on their page. While millions of users will reach those pages. So the faster approach will be the better.

I'm trying to plan a series of websites that all share many of the resources such as css/jscript/images/content etc. For this reason I wanted to run all of the websites under the same application and IIS profile, but depending on the URL being used change the masterpage and theme/skin.
The ASP.NET membership database seems as if it was designed with this goal in mind because it allows you to setup multiple applications, however I believe the purpose for which this was built was to allow applications to be run under virtual directories/fodlers, not on seperate urls.

I creating a page where our clients can view advertising images and then able to download the images in different file formats. So I need the images and the different download types all saved into the same row in the database so that when I go to display them on the page when they select a picture the right download links will be there. So here where my problem comes in, I don't know how to code it so that I can insert mulitiple file paths into the database at once. The images are saved in a table called images. The downloads are saved in a table called Image Downloads.
Here is the code for the page I have it coded to submit the images to the database but not sure how to add the rest. I have got three different sql datasources for each table not sure if that's the way to go.

I have a music related ASP.NET web site which caches a lot of static information from the database on the first request.Sometimes, the application is reset and cache is cleared while the application is on heavy load and then all http requests go to the database to retrieve that static data and cache it for other requests.
How can I ensure that only one request go to the database and cache the results, so that other request simply read that info from cache and not needlessly retrieve the same info over and over again.Can I use thread locking? For example, can I do something like lock(this) { db access here }?

I have a stored procedure that returns 3 tables within the single recordset it returns. If I set a SqlDataSource to get data from this procedure, it works, but it only returns the first table. I want to have a GridView display the data from the 2nd or 3rd table using a SqlDataSource, but I can't figure out how to specify a particular table.
While there are some posts discussing this out there, I can't get a definitive answer about whether or not this is even possible (?). In a worst-case scenario, I can create another SP that only returns the 3rd table - but that creates a little maintenance headache that I would prefer to avoid.

I have a gridview which shows the contents of the shopping cart. The qty cell is a template control bound to the qty field in the datasource. My ideal scenario is to have the user highlit the qty, write the new one and press 'enter' to update the sqldatasource but this may not be possible.
My second chose is an Update button to update the data but this erases the data from the other fields not listed as key.
I have tried the edit and update functions but then all fields are editable and I dont't want that, just the qty cell. If I change the read only atrribute to true on the ones that I don't want edited, then it erases the information from those fields.

I'm having a bit of trouble with knowing how I can save items from a list I have in Application state in the global.asax as- Application[""].
My controller basically takes in some user input, I then pass this to another classes Method as parameters it gets added to a list all the time. This data thats getting added to the list I want to store it, but without using a db. By using Application State. . I have been instantiating this class and calling its method to return the list of items but I dont think Application State is saving it.
Here is what I have so far. .
protected void Application_Start()
{
RegisterRoutes(RouteTable.Routes);
TimeLineInformation t = new TimeLineInformation();
IList<SWTimeEnvInfoDTO> g = t.getInfo();
[Code]....
The SWTimeEnvInfoDTO type has get and set methods for the data.
I am calling the application from a View as well. It works with a string
Application["AppID"] = "fgt";
and shows this once i read it from my view.

So I created this function to work on ItemUpdating so that the value of one of the formview fields could be changed programmatically to a constant I do a response.write value to make sure there is something in there. However, checking the database, the only getting written is null:

Exampler would be Smith, John, 2010, Going After an Ideal Solution, 500 pages. Gridview allows me to set the cell format, but for the entire cell. I would like to present this as a mixture.

I have a multiview inside an updatepanel. in one of the views, I save a value in a session object like this:
Session["xyz"] = "some string value";
Then I switch to another view and try to pick it up the value in a button's OnClick event:
string x = Session["xyz"].ToString();
But I get a null reference error. Debugging it shows that Session["xyz"] is indeed null, yet other Session variables are still there. Is there something special about Session and AJAX?

I am using the cascading dropdownlist controls from the Ajax toolkit. I have everything working perfectly and all of my select changes work. I have 3 related select boxes that all work great for single item select. What I need is for my last dropdownlist to allow for the selection of multiple items. I have tried adding the 'multiple' attribute to the final dropdown list and it allows the selection of multiple items but I cannot get the items when I post back, just a single item.

For my site, I have a list of users and a list of events. I will be assigning users to each event. I have a table named EventUsers to hold this data:
EventUsers
EventID | UserID
1 | 123
1 | 456
2 | 789
On my page, I want to be able to add and remove users for a certain event. I could have a dropdown populated with users and an "Add" button next to it, then when I want to add a user, I pick one and click "Add". There would be a grid below it displaying all the users for the event, with "Delete" buttons for each one. The downside to this is that a database call is made for every Add and Delete.
Another option is to have two listboxes on the page - one on the left containing all users in the database, and another on the right which will contain users for the given event, and I can just add or remove from the list on the right. Then when I'm done, I click save, and it makes one database call. The only issue is that if I'm removing and adding, I'll have to delete every record in my EventUsers table for that event, and then add the changes. I've run into this before, and I've always gone with the dropdown method. What's the preferred method here?

When designing an ASP.NET user control my standard way for creating say a details view would be to create a property of the desired type on my page and would set the property in the page load based on the supplied query parameter. I feel I'm probably doing more work then necessary. If I could encase my view inside a container then I could merely have it databound and thus make everything declarative.My question is what would be the lightweight container/controls that would be appropriate for databinding a single object?As a second question, how can I handle invalid query strings with this method?
