C# - Web Custom Control And Checking For Existing JavaScript References?
Jan 26, 2011
I am creating a custom control and had a thought before I began. My control relies on the jQuery library to work. What if the user already has a version of the library already on their page. Will this effect anything? If my version is newer / older and my control will only work with that version of the libaray, what should I do?

To Add new row to a dataset table, I am using code below. Before adding this how do I check if that row has already been added to the dataset?
Example:
Dim newCustomersRow As DataRow = DataSet1.Tables("Customers").NewRow()
newCustomersRow("CustomerID") = "ALFKI"
newCustomersRow("CompanyName") = "Alfreds Futterkiste"
DataSet1.Tables("Customers").Rows.Add(newCustomersRow)
Note: The table I am dealing with does not contain a primary key!

I'm trying to include script and style references that will not break on deployment, however I can not even get the references to work locally. I have tried using Url.Content() and MVCContrib's <%=Html.ScriptInclude("")%>.
My scripts are in a Scripts folder on the root of the site; my styles are in the usual Content/css/ folder.
The scripts render like this:
<script type="text/javascript" src="/Scripts/MicrosoftAjax.debug.js" ></script>
This will not work in a view page in the Views folder. What am I doing wrong and what is the best way to handle this?
I would have thought Url.Content() would at least work for styles but used in my master page, the link rendered
<link href="/Content/css/Site.css rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
This does not work, because the Master Page is in a Shared folder, so what is really the way forward with this?

I have an entity object as model input in my view. Not sure if it's the best approach, but I use the object references to get values from a related object.Let's say I've got a car entity and a manufacturer entity.Here's how it would look in my view
[Code]....
I've get a nullreferenceexception where the car entitity does not have a reference towards manufacturer. I'd like to output a " " if no manufacturer exists.

I am having problems adding a reference to a custom assembly in my Bin folder within a controller class I am writing. I can see the dlls in the Bin folder of my Solution file and when adding a new 'using' block to the top of code page, its not picking up any of my assemblies as I try to spell them out.I tried just typing them in and building the solution, but I get errors, it just wont pick these up!

I am creating a custom server control, and I am wanting to include a JavaScript file in the dll file when the control is built. I have tried suggestions from the following websites:[URL] But after following the directions, If I use firebug to see what errors show up, the JavaScript functions that are being called all say "goNext is not defined" which leads me to believe the JavaScript file is not being added correctly.
Some information on what my control looks like
I have the JavaScript File in a folder called Script. The namespace of the project is CustomControl, and the Name of the project is MaskedDateTextbox.
In my AssemblyInfo I have the following:
<Assembly: AssemblyVersion("1.0.*")>

I am using Reporting Services to render a report directly to PDF. It requires that I use two web references: ReportExecution2005.asmx and ReportService2005.asmx. The performance on web references seems really poor. Since my web server (IIS7) and my SQL Server (2008) are on the same box, is there a way I can reference them directly? If not is there any way I can explicitly cache them or something. First load is really really slow, second load is perfectly acceptable.

On my page in the Page_Load event I add a collection of strings to the Context object. I have an HttpModule that will fire EndRequest and retrieve the collection of strings. What I then do is write out a script reference tag (based on the collection of strings) to the response. The problem is that the page reads the script reference but doesn't retrieve the contents of the file (I imagine because this is occurring in the EndRequest event). I can't fire the BeginRequest event because I won't have access to the Context Items collection.
I tried to also registering an HttpHandler which Processes the request of the script reference but I can't access the collection of strings in the Context.Items from there.

I have an ASP.NET application using a master page. I am adding a reference to the JQuery library in the master page however there are some content pages and user controls that reference the JQuery library directly. Will I need to remove each reference from those pages or can I leave them in place even though I am adding a reference into the master page of the application?

I have some (probably very basic) questions about developing custom controls. I am wanting to derive a set of button controls, and the first one I have started on is a "DeleteButton", that has a additional property (DeleteConfirmationText) that is built into the OnClientClick attribute. To get that added, I overrode the Render method as follows:
[Code]....
This all works well. Now, I will add some logic to make sure that there is some text in the DeleteConfirmationText property, but that isn't the intent of my question.
What I am also wanting to do is to override some of the default property values, so I added that to the default constructor:
[Code]....
Now, in the designer in VS2008, and I look at the properties for the control, there isn't a default value shown in the "Properties" section, and the Causesvalidation still shows the underlying classes default value of "True". As well, in design mode, where the GridView control that containse my DeleteButton control would be displayed, there is an error box "There was an error rendering the control. 'Are you certain you want to delete this attorney?' cound not be set on property 'DeleteConfirmationText'. Here's the markup where I am defining the deletebutton control:
[Code]....
What am I doing wrong?

I am creating a custom control and was wondering if it is possible to render any JavaScript in the head tags of the page it is placed on? I am thinking I would need to use the FindControl method, but am not sure what I need to bind to. I am thinking the page object? Let me know if I am thinking in the right direction or if there is another option.
My only concern with the above mentioned idea is that how do I render all my content while placing some code in the head tags?

As a starting point for creating custom controls, I would like to make a control that simply displays a number. If we imagine the .ascx file contains nothing except for a literal control, and the code behind sets that value to 1.
I then want to be able to do myControl.increment();
This will run some javascript that increases the value of the literal control.
I could inject a javascript into the page, such as pseudocode:
page_load
{
scriptything.register("function increment(x) { $('#myLiteral').increment(); });
}
or something, but that wouldn't be myControl.increment, that would just be increment(). More than one control on the page would screw it up.

I am using if (document.getElementById('<%= MainImg.ClientID %>').complete) {
hideLoadDiv();
}
to hide a div which indicates the image is not loaded yet,but it hides before the image has finished loading and is shown, while the browser is giving me a message that the page is still transferring data from the server :S
Is there another function I can use to make sure that the image is fully loaded?

I am in process of building a website using asp.net and c# which fetches the new articles posted on various websites and posting those in one place. So basically, I am looking for a javascript which can keep on checking for new articles on various sites,and if it finds a new article then it will fetch it and post it on my website with comments at the bottom.e.g.If a new article is posted on cnbc.com then that article must be fetched and posted on my website with comments "courtesy:cnbc.com"

I have found plenty of examples where the checkboxes to be checked are within a datalist, gridview or other datacontrol like that.. but i dont have that setup..
I have individual checkboxes within my page and need to provide a way to check or uncheck them all..
I cant use a checkboxlist because of the layout of the page.. so not sure if it would be easiest with javascript or do it with the checked event for the single check box that will be used..
I know that may not be the best or cleanest way, but is there a better way?
Reason i cant use a checkboxlist for the larger set of checkboxes, is that a few of them will have additional fields that need to be completed if they chose certain checkboxes.. so i have those controls next to the checkbox that they belong with..

On my web part page I use a JavaScript timer to call a Page Method to check if data has changed and then only I refresh the page. Now I want to disable that JavaScript timer when the web part page is in shared personalization mode. Then when web part page is again in BrowseDisplayMode, I want to reenable the timer to poll for updates. How do I access web part manager personalization mode in the client side JavaScript ? Do I need to use a hidden file in UpdatePanel ?
