C# - Why It's Not Possible To Debug IscriptControl Javascript Code

Dec 7, 2010

I use visual studio 2008. When I set breakpoints on code they don't break. So only thing I can do is to debug "manually" using firefox with firebug.Is there a way to debug with Visual studio?

Passing Complex Objects To Javascript Via IScriptControl?

Mar 24, 2010

I'm playing around with a asp.net page that's using the IScriptControl interface to pass data from the code-behind to the custom javascript object running on the browser.I'm passing a number of properties via IScriptControl.GetScriptDescriptors(), and they're all working fine, except for one.That one is a class derived from System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary<>. And even that one has been working for me, so long as the elements in the collection were scalars - ints, doubles, and strings. But when I tried to pass a member of a class, it showed up as a null object in the javascript. The class in question is marked [Serializable]. I changed it to a struct, and got the same behavior.It looks as if the serializer used in IScriptControl does a shallow copy.

Asp.net - Equivalent To IScriptControl For Web.UI.Page?

Apr 1, 2010

We've been using IScriptControl to tie javascript objects to our UserControls and ServerControls, and it's worked fine.The problem is that ASP.NET seems to provide no method to tie a javascript object to a Page. Up to now, we've been putting plain functions in the global namespace, but I am developing a serious allergy to that practice.It'd be easy enough to wrap our functions into a javascript class, and to include the javascript file on the page, but how to instantiate the object, how to reference it from callback events, and how to pass data to it from the code-behind, I haven't figured out.Or rather, the methods we've been using up to now (hidden fields, emitted javascript strings, etc.

AJAX :: Inheriting From ServerControl That Uses IScriptControl

Mar 30, 2010

I've written a ServerControl that contains a significant amount of javascript, and I'm using IScriptControl to pass parameters from the server code to the javascript. The javascript file is configured as an embedded resource, and a script reference to the file is being injected into the html by IScriptControl.GetScriptReferences(). The ServerControl is contained in a DLL assembly. When I use the control in a test page everything works fine.

What I want to do is to extend the control - to derive a new control from it, in a second assembly, that provides some extended functionality. (The first assembly contains code that is shared across customers, the second code that is shared across several projects for the same customer). So, my problem: I create a new ServerControl that derives from the first, but doesn't yet provide any new functionality.

[Code]....

Then I change my "<%@ Register ... %>" tag in the test page to reference the derived control. Things compile just fine, and the code-behind runs fine, but I get an undefined variable error in javascript. Sys.Application.add_init() is calling $create(), passing the <namespace>.<classname> of the javascript class, and it's throwing an error on the namespace.

Now, the namespace is registered on the first line of javascript file. Which makes it look like the javascript file might not be being included, when using the derived control. So I stuck a "debugging" line in front of the Type.registerNamespace(). Using the base control, the debugger breaks as it should. Using the derived control, it does not.

So, I look at the script includes in both versions of the page. They are identical. The sources are src="/testing/WebResource.axd?<random junk>", or src="/testing/ScriptResource.axd?<random junk", so I'm not sure which one refers to my embedded javascript file, but whichever one it is, the includes are identical between the page using the base control that works and the page using the derived control that does not.

Visual Studio :: How To Debug Javascript

Jun 1, 2010

I am using VS2010 and am working on an ASP.NET web application for .net 4.0.

I have created a file called StringUtilities.js and placed it in a subfolder of my application called Scripts.

The entire content of the file is listed here:

[Code]....

In one of my .aspx pages I have the following code:

[Code]....

On a button's "OnClientClick" (for example) I call the method encodeText() and everything works fine.

Today I added the method updateImage() which calls StringUtilities.js - updateAttribute() method, also added today.

If I open that unit in VS2010 and place a break point in the source code for the new method it turns white and says:

"The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document.".

What gets even stranger (this is so hard to exaplain)....

Before today I did not have the method updateAttribute() in that .js file. So even though my source editor is showing all of my new source code changes, if I trace the previous method that did exists - htmlEncode(), the trace lines in the editor are highlighting where the lines "used" to be. which is near the top of that file as if my new code was not there.

It just sounds like there must be a different way of tracing javascript and the way I am doing it must not be it. I would have assumed it worked the same way I would trace my c# code.

How To Debug Javascript Registered With RegisterClientScriptBlock Method

Aug 29, 2010

I have many existing scripts that I need to debug, all embededed from code behind.

I would prefer to use Visual Studio 2008 client side debbging features, but breakpoints can only be set inside the aspx file withing a script block.

The problem is I can't put a breakpoint on the scripts because they are all registered from the code behind file(not the aspx file). The scripts are added to the page using ClientScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock Method (Type, String, String, Boolean)

Here is an example(it's not broke, just an example of how it's added to the page).

if (!cs.IsClientScriptBlockRegistered(cstype, csname2))
{
StringBuilder cstext2 = new StringBuilder();
cstext2.Append("<script type="text/javascript"> function DoClick() {");
cstext2.Append("Form1.Message.value='Text from client script.'} </");
cstext2.Append("script>");
cs.RegisterClientScriptBlock(cstype, csname2, cstext2.ToString(), false);
}

Is it possible to debug it without having to pull out each script in a test page?

Custom Server Controls :: Accessing Embedded Resource From IScriptControl?

Dec 1, 2010

My Composite control implements IScriptControl interface.

ScriptReferences java script file does the client-side work, there I want to load a html file inside iFrame.

The Html file is an embedded resource:

([assembly: System.Web.UI.WebResource("Control.Resources.list.htm", "text/html")])

I pass the path of the html to the javascript file via descriptor property:

IEnumerable<ScriptDescriptor> IScriptControl.GetScriptDescriptors()
{
descriptor.AddProperty("iframe", iframe);
return new ScriptDescriptor[] { descriptor };
}

Where iframe is a string that contains the path from the webresource.

Now, in this html file I want to display few images that must be also loaded from resource.

The Question is how to access the resources from this html file?

Do I have to pass every image path as descriptor property?

Unable To Debug Code In App_Code Folder?

Feb 12, 2010

I appear to have hit a brick wall whilst attempting to debug some C# code that resides in the App_Code folder.We have an established ASP.NET solution and I've just been brought onto the team. Unfortunately when I run the code [which successfully debugs (to a certain extent)] it does not step into a *.cs file that exists in the App_Code folder.I've found several posts on the subject, none of which seem relevant to me.

Specifically:

Running Win7 Enterprise 32 bit VS2005 8.0.50727.867 (vsvista.050727-8600) http://forums.asp.net/p/958358/3675792.aspx#3675792 mentioned removing the "+optimize" in the web.config file; this doesn't seem to be relevant to me (<compiler language="c#;cs;csharp" extension=".cs" compilerOptions="/d:TRACE"
type="Microsoft.CSharp.CSharpCodeProvider, System, Version=2.0.3600.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089"/>)
The "App_Code" folder doesn't seem to have any peculiar setting associated with it

I also said that debugging works successfully "to a certain extent". I've set up Visual Studio with the C# developer environment. When I hit F11 I would expect the IDE to begin debugging and for the execution point to stop on the very first line of code (this is what it does in all my other projects in VS2003 & VS2008). However, when I hit F11 it acts like F5, running until it either hits a break point or a run-time error. I'm wondering whether this may be related to it not even hitting break-points in code in my App_Code folder?

Javascript - AJAX Enabled Controls Are Working - Debug When Necessary?

Mar 2, 2011

I use AJAX controls a lot - AJAX update panels, AJAX-enabled grids, etc. (mostly from Infragistics), and most of the time, things work great. But sometimes they don't, and I have no idea where to start with debugging etc. The AJAX part of it is a black box (seemingly), and I really don't like that. I want to know enough about AJAX and javascript such that I have confidence to work with these controls instead of just praying that they work. I want to be able to debug them, and also have confidence that I am using them properly (because I don't feel I can possibly use them really properly and appropriately if I don't know what they are doing). What do I need to know to get this comfort? Where can I learn about this? How should I go about tackling learning about this?

Visual Studio :: Unable To Debug The Javascript Files

Jun 1, 2010

I am using VS 2008 for development of a web application and IE 7.

The website as usually has some java script and some server side code files (different layers).

For some reason when I start the application in the debug mode (by hitting F5), the break points in the JS are not hit. I get the usual error as no symbols are loaded. But the break points in the CS files in the layers are hit.

If I use (CTLR + F5) and then attach the IE process to debug, then I am able to hit the break points in the JS file. But in this scenario I cant debug the CS files (I presume this is the expected bahaviour).

EDIT: In the IE (properties dialog), 'disable debugging' are unchecked.

why in the F5 mode I am not able to hit the debug points. The same used to work in the different machine not sure what is wrong in this one.
