C# - Blank Site Shows Web.config Error When I Try To Access It?

Mar 15, 2011

i have created a blank asp.net website consisting of a blank default.aspx page, its .cs file, a login.aspx page and its .cs and a web.config. im looking to test .net authentication as seen in here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/xdt4thhy.aspx on the msdn site. ive copied everything as shown in the atricle. i set up the site in iis6 now when i go to the site i get the runtime error with the

"To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off"." message. when i add the customErrors mode="On" tag to the web.config i still get this error like its not looking at the web.config. ive triple checked iis and its definitely looking at the right site folder. heres my web.config:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<configuration>
<system.web>

Internet Explorer Shows Error When Downloading Excel File In SSL Site?

Mar 8, 2010

I get the following error when downloading excel file in SSL site:

Internet Explorer cannot download xxxx.aspx from mysite.com. Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

After googling, I suspect that it's the problem of the response header. I try the solution in this page and set the header:

[URL]

HttpContext.Current.Response.AddHeader("Pragma", "no-cache");
HttpContext.Current.Response.CacheControl = "private";

Visual Studio :: Shows Blank Page During Web Development?

Jun 26, 2010

I just upgraded a web project from VS2008 to VS2010 Ultimate (Windows7 64bit, IE8/Google Chrome. When I run the web project in the development server (by hitting F5) everything acts like it is supposed to except everything comes up blank. Even the directory structure page is blank, just an empty HTML open and close shell. I get no errors no indications of failure, nothing. When I try to use google chrome I get the same blank page no matter where I navigate to, even if I try to navigate to a non-existant location on the dev server. I know the code compiles and acts correctly because I can deploy it to our QA servers without issue.

I have set up a small SQL Server database for users to login and also create accounts. There is a problem with the connection string though. Whenever I use the connection string below in the web.config file I get a server error page and cannot view the website. However when I take out this connection string I am able to view the website albeit the database doesn't work.

Configuration :: Blank Web.config File And AJAX?

Jul 21, 2010

I have two test machines that both have the same issue. I have one running IIS7.5 with Windows 2008 R2 and another server running IIS7 on WIndows 2008. I am having a problem with my Web.config files not being published to the server using WebDAV. The file seems to be replaced with a blank Web.config file. Since the Web.config file is blank non of my AJAX web pages are working. I have AJAX web pages that use Microsoft's AJAX 2.0 or 3.5 (they were created in Visual Studio 2008) and I have AJAX web pages that use pure javascript accessing Codebehind classes by AjaxPro2.dll I found on the Web. All these projects worked on Windows Server 2003 with ASP.NET v3.5 because it published the Web.config file.I believe the issue has something to do with the validation process Windows 2008 uses to make sure the Web.config file is not corrupt. I tried many Web.configs and nothing works. All my applications are running from a single root folder located in inetpubwwwroot
and that single folder is "converted to application" using the DefaultAppPool (ASP.NET v2.0 Integrated Mode).

I found a workaround which is to publish my normal Web.config and a copy of it name something else like Web2.config. The Web.config is replaced on the server with a blank one, which I delete directly from the server (via Remote Desktop) and I rename the other Web2.config. This works for all my AJAX webpages both the MS AJAX and the "native" ones using pure javascript and the AJAXPro2.dll.

I tried setting the application on IIS to another Application Pool "ASP.NET v4.0 Integrated" and my MS AJAX web pages work perfectly with the blank Web.config file and not using the workaround at all. However, the "native" AJAX using purjavascript and the AJAXPro2.dll do not work because they require settings in the Web.config. This means there is something that ASP.NET 4.0 has that allows it to run the MS AJAX without a proper Web.config. I thought this might help you figure out my problem.

I have been racking my brain over this for a few weeks now and I am stuck. I really need help with getting my Web.config file from my VS2008 applications to publish (via WebDAV) to my IIS server. I can do this in either setup IIS7.5 Windows Server 2008 R2 or IIS7 Windows Server 2008. I am a programmer not system administrator. I have admin access of these servers and the system adminstrator is also stumped.Let me know if you need any additional information like my Web.config file or log files from the server.

.net - Root Web.config Used Instead Of Site Web.config?

Mar 11, 2010

I had a situation on a dev server where all the ASP.Net applications we have started to fail at the same time.After some investigation we found that calls the app settings, in 1.1 apps, and the connection strings collection in 2.0 apps all failed. The config files had the values, but the code was returning null.After some head scratching and searching I thought that perhaps the root web.config was being used and the sites one ignored. To test out this theory I added the app settings required for one of the sites to the root web.config. This allowed the site to work.

Access An Internal Site Through An External Site?

Aug 6, 2010

I'm pretty sure the answer to this question is no, but I just wanted to get some feedback before I go down another path.

Here is my scenario. I have two websites. Website 1 is an internal website that cannot be accessed outside of our domain. Website 2 is an external website that can be accessed outside of the domain, but has access to webservices inside of the domain.

My question is, is there any possible way to display the internal page through the external page without making the internal page external.

Access :: IIS_WPG Write/modify Access To The Folder Where MS-Access Database Is Located - Insert An Error Pop-up?

Feb 17, 2010

Is there anything missing in IIS 6.0 that prevents me from (Insert into table) using MS-Access?

Explain: The application works fine under Visual Studio 2008 IDE the insert into table works fine with no error, Also I tested with hosting provider and works fine with no problem. but now I have published the same exact app in a dedicated server windows 2003 with
IIS 6.0 .NET framework 2.0 with latest service pack I gave IIS_WPG write/modify access to the folder where MS-Access database is located and database but at the time of insert an error pop-up. I need to install in the Server or settings in the IIS to recognize my MS-Access db is it some office runtime that I am missing. (BTW I am using OLEDB connection string in my C# )

Using System.Data.OleDb;

I can retrieve data off of it with no problem but when I try to insert is when it fails I thought the problem was Access Rights but I do not think is the case.

Configuration :: Site Settings File Vs. Web Config?

Nov 12, 2010

I've been thinking about this for a couple days but still would like some feedback on the best way to go about this:

I have multiple sites (domains) that will be running the same code. However, there are a couple settings I have in the appsettings web.config file which are relative to each site. (ie: defaultSiteTitle, emailFromAddress, etc).

I would like to deploy this application in only one location (folder) and point the domains in IIS to that one directory.

To do this, I believe I cannot use the web.config file to hold these settings...

So, I decided to make a SiteSettings.xml file and load the site settings in there:

<sites>
<oSite domain="abc.com" defaultSiteTitle="This is Site ABC" emailFromAddress="info@abc.com" />
<oSite domain="xyz.com" defaultSiteTitle="This is Site XYZ" emailFromAddress="info@xyz.com" />
</sites>

So when I need to access the site settings I just call a function in my datalayer that reads this xml file and via the httpRequest I pass it it determines which site settings to use.

Okay, that works when I call it from a page where I have the httpRequest...

Howver, now when I'm into some business layer functions say sendEmail and I need to find the emailFromAddress from the SiteSettings.xml file, I don't have the httpRequest. I know I could probably hack something together and pass it someway...

But I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this...

I don't really want to store it into session.

Is it possible to tell IIS what web.config file to look at, if I had multiple web.config files? (I don't think this is possible).
