my question is this, how can i simulate a text base basketball game in a web application.
The game logic class is ready and in use in my WPF application, however I want to transfer it to a web base application. But I have no idea how to keep the game thread a live + updating the UI every second.(only text update are required).
I need a reliable way of checking if a user is logged into a web based game. This is the scenario:
I have a game on the front end built in Flash with Actionscript 3, that calls a web Service in .NET. So in some way I'd like to create a reliable way of getting a list of users that are logged into the game. I would need to create a Timer in Actionscript that calls a method in the Web Service every certain amount of time, but I'm not sure which is the best way to do it on the server side.
I remember in the old days with classic asp I'd use global.asa and it was not reliable at all. Also, checking a database with a boolean, would always depend on the user clicking on "logout". So i guess there needs to be some kind of asyncronous coding in there somehow.
I am going to start a new online trading simulation game.
Server Page:
A game will be loaded with an xml which contains the instruments for this game and each instrument initial and changing factor price(which determines the price for the next interval ex: 1 min).
User Page:
After the game is loaded successfully, Users can launch a page where they can buy/sell instruments. During this buy/selling process, the profit/loss should be shown to user in real time. A dropdown will be populated with the instruments, when selected, should show a real time graph of the price.
Design:
I want to use ASP.NET and silverlight to develop this application where an ajax request will be sent in configurable time to the server to get the latest details about the instruments. Then based on the response, the client browser will be updated with the latest prices. The instrument graph also will be updated in the same way. So, I would like to know whether this is a right way of building this applicaiton.
I was searching server software to build a Multiplayer Online Game. All of the servers I found up to now use Java in the server side (ie smartfoxserver)

How do I engineer failover logic properly if an Assembly (.dll) cannot find a web.config file?
Background: I've got our website code nicely modularized into two different .dlls. For simplicity's sake, let's call them:
website.dll
commonengine.dll
The website code and .aspx / .ascx files calls upon the commonengine library for all data layer stuff. For connection strings, the commonengine in turn looks not to the app.config but to the website's web.config file (that's my own preference -- I prefer to have our production constants all in one place). The website code occasionally (very rarely) needs to access stuff in that web.config file. All good so far (even though not entirely pure).
Here's the trouble. I've written a third module. It's a Windows Service (specifically, it's a POP3 checker/processor -- processing mailbox requests and using the commonengine.dll for some data layer stuff). The problem is the Windows Service calls upon the commonengine.dll, and the commonengine.dll cannot find web.config anywhere because, after all, it's a Windows service (.exe) and doesn't live in a website directory.
What's the proper test/logic here to use app.config when a web.config file cannot be found?

View 1 RepliesI was wondering if setting a default value for a SelectList is considered to be presentation logic or business logic? For example, if a requirement is that an Employee cannot be saved without a Location, but 99% of the time the location that would be selected is a particular item -- say Atlanta. Because of this, the location SelectList should be defaulted to Atlanta when ever a entry screen for a new employee is displayed. Should I be defaulting the location in the model or in the view-model? One thing I realized is that the unit tests become awkward because in both cases, I'd be forced to test against a location that will always be present in production but I cannot create a unit test with my own test dataunless "Atlanta" was in the set of locations being used in the test.

I want to create a Online Exam site in ASP.NET .In that i want to display Test based on the Date and time and the user can take the test at the time set my the Teacher.
For Example:
Teacher want to take C Test for the Mid Semester Test and the test is schedule on 1 May 2010,then the test should appear on the test page on the 1st may only and the user should be able to take the test on the set time.
The problem is that if i use System time then user can change the system time and can take the test schedule in future.

i have some flash game that the user can save his name and scores. the flash game sends tha values with POST method. how can i call this values from asp.net cs page? when its in get (querystring) i know how to get this value but its not good because of security problems.

I am developing a small browser based game in asp.net. Think of a game room which has a capaticy of 22 players and players join the room by clicking a button. ( I am saving the number of players in the room in database) I need to call a method when the number of players in the room is 22. The problem is I don't know how to control the number of players in the room. I mean I think like there need to be a bacground code which has to run all the time at the server and that code controls the number and call the function.

I added a Select button, "Play" to this grid view, and what i want to do is connect the play button with another player. View 1 RepliesI'm trying to create a typical Housie/Bingo Game ticket in Asp.net 2.0 (VB). But, not being succeeded. Ticket contains 3 row with 9 columns. Total 27 blocks, and it must be only 15 should be fill outta those 27. and each column contains value like 1st column should be between 1-10 and 2nd must have random values between 11-20.. It doesn't matter how many blocks filled in each column.. 1 is must, no single column should be blank, all 9 columns must be filled, some have all 3 blocks filled, some have 1 with total of 15 blocks filled in whole ticket. with random numbers..
Guys here was the typical housie ticket specification.. Please help me out generating a ticket like this. I've tried but, not being that much succeeded, I get whole column blank and validating columns.. takes extra load on system. please find me the way to make it.
I am executing a long-running Oracle stored procedure from .NET. The procedure takes about three hours to run. Ideally, the user should be able to kick off the procedure, close the browser, and come back later to check the results.
The problem is that the connection to the Oracle procedure is lost after exactly an hour. As you would expect, the Oracle procedre runs to completion if it is executed from SQL Plus. Strangely enough, it will also run to completion if I run in debug mode on my local machine (I start two threads, one of which executes the procedure. I set a breakpoint on the second thread).
Here is my connection string:

I am a student and i want to make online gaming website as a part of my academic project.
Now the problem that i am facing is that as it is an academic project i have to use downloaded swf games into my project . now i want to fetch the highest score for an individual for a particular game and i want to store that data into my database so that i can populate the list of high scorers for any particular game on my webpage.
It is an online game, I need to develop a 'Launch' button on the game site to launch the client side game. I have seen this in several online games like this one. How can this be done?

I've got a C# MVC 2 application using EF 4. My DAL project gets data from the Model, translates them into POCO's and returns ViewModels to the BLL which is called from the controllers.I've set up validation attributes on the POCO classes and that works for "Required" fields etc. I would like to add business logic such as "From" has to be before the "To" date. Can this be done on the POCO classes so it is automatically validated client-side in the view?
Also, I would like to add some functionality to the BLL layer such as checking if a resource is already booked between the From and To dates to avoid double bookings. This should fire before the ViewModel is saved. I tried a Try/Catch statement in the controller so that I can throw an error in the BLL, but I don't understand how to return this error to the view with an appropriate error message added.
I need to assign channel for each schedule. There can be as many concurrent events as number of channels allocated for the customer. I.e if the customer is allocated 3 channels then he can have 3 concurrent events. If a channel was allocated to a event then the same channel cannot to allocated to another event that falls under same time but the same channel can be allocate to another event if the time differs.
